Yo, Pat,
Many thanks for the info. At least it confirms the
existence of Rhandir Abbot.
On the first point, from my reading, as the modern parish
of Ystradyffin was not created until 1875, at the time of David Davies`s
birth in 1860, Rhandi Abbot would have been considered a part of
Llanfair-ar-y-bryn. So, is/was there a parish church of Llanfair-ar-y-bryn
where David`s parents` marriage would have been solemnised ?
On the second point, my David Davies was a farmer`s son
from Abergeffel Farm, Llangramach, born in 1837, so couldn`t be your pastry
cook.
Again, many thanks and best wishes,
Ceri

Hello Ceri
I have just taken out from the library "Pages from the History of
Llandovery" Volume 2 by Alfred Theodore Arber-Cooke.
I beleive Yvonne referred to this book on the list some time ago.
It has a couple of items which may be of interest.
1) " In Archaeologia Cambrensis 1915 a paper on ecclesiastical place-
names in Carmarthenshire lists the churches and chapels formerly in the
parish of Llandingat as Llandovery,Llanfair-ar-y-Bryn, Llangynfab, Capel
Newydd, Capel Peulin and Nant-y-Bai.
Most of these, together with Capel Brith which is not in the list have
been described in these pages.
As for the others, Capel Peulin and Nany_y_Bai, these lie far from
Llandovery and are included in the modern parish of Ystradyffin created
in 1875 from aprts of the chapelry of Llanfair-ar-y-Bryn and the parish
of Cilycwm and endowed in 1887 with the tithes of Rhandir Abbot,
RhandirGanol and part of Llandingat."
2) Re your David Davies - do you know his occupation?
In a description of the inhabitants of Stone street it has
"No 10 was let separately from No 8 throughout its history. The first
known tenant was Daniel Davies, pastrycook, who was renting the premises
in1836. According to the Burgess Roll, he moved to High Street in 1841.
Elizabeth Davies, tenant of the house in the eighteenforties and Sarah
Jones tenant in the sixties and seventies were general shopkeepers."
Hope some of this is interesting.
Pat
