Just a few more presentments from 1684 - I thought that Llangunnor seemed to
show some insight into how life was at this time.....
Llangunnor
The presentment of the Minister and Churchwardens exhibited the 22nd July
1684, in the Episcopal Visitation of the right reverend father in God,
Lawrence, by Divine permission Lord Bishop of St David's 1684.
WE have not a cover to ye font.
The reading pew is not in sufficient repair.
We have not a book of homilies, whether in Welsh or in English.
We have a surplice but no other ornaments.
We have a good paper book with covers and clasps.
Our minister is with us every Sunday, or some curate for him. He is absent
most of ye week time but has some to supply for him. Mr Meyrick (1) curate
supplies for him.
He reads evening prayer but seldom. He constantly reads Divine Service
every Sunday. He preaches sometimes once a week, sometimes once a
fortnight, and commonly every onth, or procures somebody for him.
We know of no recusants or sectaries in our parish.
There is one Griffith David under suspicion of incest.
The children are seldom brought to public baptism in our church, but they
are baptized at home according to the forms and rites appointed by the
Liturgy.
When the parishioners do receive the Sacrament they receive it kneeling.
Rees Lewis and his wife do not cohabit.
There is a private schoolmaster in our parish, but whether he is licensed by
the Bishop we know not.
There is one Anne Thomas a midwife.
We know none that doth wilfully neglect and absent themselves from Divine
worship without sufficient cause.
Seldom or never doth any stranger preach.
