Hi Rosemary
I've been following the "conversations" on this subject and am intrigued
but not able to help directly. There are quite a few "castle Green"
about but none that seem to fit for your quest.
However I pondered over a few points.
1. What is the total inscription on the prize book as there may just be
something that may provide a clue.
Is it definitely a Methodist chapel ? is it calvinist or wesleyan?
2. Often there is a person's name as "presenter" as well as the school
name.
3.
As I think you have said the "Castle Green" may be a descriptive name
for the school and it was not commonly called by the name of the chapel.
4. You say Phillipa's mother married William Hughes in Neath in 1834 -
did you get this from the parish register?
This doesn't necessarily mean the chapel was also in Neath.
I see she and William are living in Mayals (south of Sketty) in 1841
while Phillipa is in Oxford Steet Swansea (quite near the Castle!!!!
there is/was a congregational chapel in Castle Street)
5) Looking at "modern" Mayals - it is near Clyne Castle and there is a
Church/chapel in Green Close - but that is probably a red herring!
Although I do see that some "old" names are prserved in "modern
place"
e.g Grange farm seems to be where Grange school is now , Whitestone was
where Whitestone primary school is now Etc etc.
6) Going back to Neath area and Bethleham Green Chapel which you
mentioned (Calvinist Methodist) - Of course Neath is Castell Nedd. Was
the inscription you read clear or could the Green of Bethlehem have got
mixed with the Castell of Castell Nedd???
Would like to hear your comments - hope I have given you some food for
thought
Pat

Dear Pauline,
Many thanks for your help. I will keep on searching and
asking, as the references which I have (Bartholomew's Gazetteer and
Phillimore's Atlas and Index of Parish Registers, as well as the internet)
are not sufficiently detailed for what is possibly a local commonly used
name, used within a brief period only, for an officially named body.
Just how many Castle Greens would there be in Wales, and
how many are descriptive local usage, not an official name!
Many thanks,
Rosemary
