Subject: 1st Barry Troop (Guides) 1920 Info Wanted
Hi Listers
Just thought you would like to know that the barry based Axis Historical
Society has been donated items which related to the '1st Barry Troop'
(Guides) formed in the 1920s by one Mrs or Miss Lomas. We are led to
believe
that her Christian name began with a 'C'.
Though called the '1st Barry Troop', this is not strictly true. In 1916 an
initial attempt to set up Guiding in Barry had bee carried out by one Miss
Lee (Please feel free to correct if I am wrong), a former Head Mistress of
the Girl's County School Barry had formed two troops, which remained in
place
until 1918. The reason for their demise being given as the effects of
the
Great War.
The items now in gratefully received and the care of our society are
listed
as follows. 1. Standard, complete with original brass fittings and
original
flag emblazoned with the Red Dragon of Wales with the words 'East
Glamorgan'
underneath. 2. Two hat cockades one in silver and the other blue. We
think
possibly that these are to denote positions of officer rank in the Guide
movement during the 1920s. 3. An emasculate white vest with navy blue
piping
around the neck. 4. Around 40 photographs of the Guides taking part
in
camps
during 1922, 1923, 1924. 5. Lanyards one white, white silver. 6. Plus
two
unique sets of eating utensils designed to take up little space in a pack.
Sadly we have no history of the '1st Barry Troop' or that of Mrs C. Lomas
to
go with them. In consequence Axis would like to appeal to any lister
who
may
hold a history, information or images of this troop carrying out
their
various duties to contact us.
Regards
Martin Adams
