Has anyone any idea of a monument at Carmarthen town which has
details
of Superintendent of Police. May be reference to George Ashton or George
Davies in the late 1800's. The confusion lies with an aged aunt who says
that my great grandmother, Sarah Ashton ( born Aberystwyth or Gwenogle
or Abergorlech, on different censuses) in 1838 had a brother George who
was Superintendent of Police.
Sarah Ashton's husband was an Evan Davies and they came to Dowlais,
Merthyr Tydfil before 1861. It may be that my aunt was confused and it
was Evan Davies's brother George Davies who was in the Police. Evan was
shown as from Abergorlech or Gwenogle, so I think it more likely that it
was Evan's brother, George Davies.
The family on the 1891 census were all Welsh speaking at the time at
Dowlais even though they had lived there for 30 or more years. I have
not been able to get to Carmarthen Town to check this as yet. Any help
would be very much appreciated.
Anyone want any help down Gwent or Glamorgan don't hesitate to ask.
all the best
