I found this interesting article in 'The Story of Llandeveilog Parish'
The Tithe is a tgax of one-tenth of a persons income from the possession of
land, payable to the Church. The Vicar of Llandefeilog complained in 1695
that he had no land or Tithe belonging to the church. In olden days the
Tithe was based on the following scale:
For every milking cow.....two pennies
For each heifer with first calf.....one penny and a half
For a one-year old calf.....one penny and a half
For one lamb out of every ten......two pennies each
For each sheep skin......two pennies each
One young pig was to be given out of every litter.
One goose if more than one to be paid during Michaelmas.
The tithe is not paid in this way now, but, instead is counted in terms of
how much wheat, oats and barley, is grown on the farm. When the tithe was
collected in the olden days in kind, the parish had to possess big barns for
the purpose of storing goods. In Llandefeilog, these barns were Ysgubor
Fawr, and the barns opposite the 'Rose and Crown.
