Hi, I am new to this list but have been researching many years in
England and (occasionally) Wales. My last foray into Welsh research
was in pre-computer days!
I have more than one line to research in Carmarthenshire, although not
very many different surnames! I have been able to find them in the
various censuses, but would welcome information from any other source.
Family 1) Catherine EDWARDS born 1841 in Llagadock, the daughter of
Thomas EDWARDS (b1818, Llandeilo) and Anne (b1821 Llangadock) was my
2x great grandmother. Catherine's sister in law Margaret EDWARDS nee
DAVIES (1850-1937) kept the Salutation Inn in Llandeilo for many years
after her husband Edward EDWARDS died.
I would be interested to find out any more about this EDWARDS family -
Margaret apparently had 11 children though I can only find 9 on the
census returns. Catherine's father Thomas was a shoemaker and lived in
Llandeilo until 1861, I cannot find him or his wife Anne after that.
I believe that Thomas's father was also Thomas, a farmer born about
1786. I have found him only on the 1841 census so far. His wife was
Anne Jones (married 14 July 1807 at Llandeilo) but I do not know if
there were any other children.
Family 2) Daniel DAVIES (b abt 1791, Llannon) and wife Ann (b abt
1792, Llannon) had 7 children according to census records. 2nd
daughter Elizabeth (b1816) married Thomas THOMAS 1841 in Llanelly.
She died in 1863, and her younger sister Mary (b 1842, Llannon)
married the widowed Thomas. There were 15 children of these two
marriages, all born in Bynea. The family bible (source of much of the
above information) mentions "Draenenbica" which I suspect may be the
name of their house. Mary and Thomas were my 2x gt grandparents.
I would be interested to hear from anyone who has any further
information on either of the above families.

Hi Pauline,
This family is very difficult to follow, but this is what I have so far.
Owen Howells 1880 - 1945 census detail at Bola Hoil in 1881, 1891, 1901 and
at Oak Villa, Pontyberem, on the 1911 census.
David Howells 1854 - 1900 census detail at Bola Hoil in 1861, 1881, 1891.
David Howells married Mary Many 1877
David Howells mother born 1835 census detail at Bola Hoil 1861 shown as a
widow. Did she marry a David Howells December qtr 1853 Llanelly with name
Ann Maning ?
Ann Many born 1835 census detail at Tycroes in 1851 census father Owen Many
Owen Many 1841 at Tycroes, 1851 at Tycroes (Ancestry named Owen Mary) 1861
at Tycroes (Ancestry named Owen Marry) 1871 Tycroes ( Ancestry Owen Manuel)
I need to find the name of the Margaret that Owen married, and the
connection to Meirick, Meyric etc
John

Hi John
On looking at our CD for 1851 Llanelly census.......it does show that
41-1a Ponteberem Glyn hamlet Llanelly
Evel Fach
Anne Meyric head 68 wid pauper born Llanelly
Humphrey Meyric son 40 unmarr collier born Llanelly
Jane Many grandau 7 born Llanelly
so her name was Jane Many and not as I had seen Jane Mary Meyric
I could not find any of the above on ancestry 1851.........wonder how they
spelt it, not even Humphrey was showing!!

Dear all,
It is possible that the emails are not really from the person named -
spammers and hackers can fake emails that look like they come from one
person when they are really being sent by spam servers in millions. So be
careful who you blame! This happened to me years ago, and the first I knew
about the emails was when I started getting hundreds of "undelivered
message" emails for messages I had not sent. Just yesterday I had the
Twitter equivalent where a friend's Twitter account has been hacked to send
out messages to get people to go to a fake Twitter site.
Pauline, you said this person is an internet friend - I would tell her what
is happening, get her to do a proper virus check and spyware check - and
probably get a new email address as well, as the chances are her address is
now tagged as a spam address, so many companies will block her email
address.

Hello List,
I've noticed a couple of Emails with no subject title from an R Lloyd. I always delete Emails without titles because I don't trust them.
Does anyone know if R Lloyd is a genuine lister; or am I right to bin those messages?
Many thanks,
Anne Powell

Hi Dilys,
For what it's worth, I can only think that as none of the children were
born before 1911, getting that census would not help. Therefore the only
thing I could suggest would be to get one of the birth certificates. Having
said that, I did do a check on the first daughter - see below.
Name: REES, Mary K Registration District: Help Llanelly County:
Carmarthenshire Year of Registration: 1913 Quarter of Registration:

My grandparents were Gomer Rees (Aug. 28, 1884 - April 13, 1959) and

Hi John
I have looked at 1841 and 1851 census for Owen and Margaret, and yes, they
are recorded with the surname Many, only 3 Many's in our Carmarthenshire
marriages from 1754-1837.......wonder if its worth obtaining the actual
parish register marriage to see what the entry was, sometimes the vicar does
make a mistake, whilst indexing I have seen (if they could write of course)
a different signature for the couple taking place than what the vicar
recorded.......
Are we assuming now that the Ann Howells we are looking for is the daughter
of Margaret Many and not a Meirick by birth.
or am I getting confused now.....?
thanks Pauline

Hi Lyndsey
It looks as if Griffith and David have left home by 1861
census.....struggling to find David in 1871, trying to find him as a
carpenter, living in Glamorganshire?
1861 RG4114/41 page 15
73 Pencaequar
Henry Thomas head marr 34 wheelwright jobber born Llanon
Mary Thomas wife marr 41 born Llanelly
Henry Thomas son 11 scholar
Mary Thomas 8
Jane Thomas 5
William Thomas 1
all born Llanelly, the age for Henry is out slightly, but that is normal in
the census from what I can find, but they are still living in the same
place!!
I have Griffith Thomas in 1861 a 17 year old servant, carter born Llanelly,
in Gellygald fach to a William Rees a farmer of 170 acres.....this was 2
schedules away from Henry and Mary on the same page....
I have David Thomas aged 14 a servant carter born Llanelly to John Rees a
farmer in Cwmlletyd uchaf Llanelly....
I'll try and find Henry in 1871....
The 1851 census that I quoted was from CFHS database for the whole of
Carmarthenshire which we have indexed.

Hi Pauline,
That's fantastic, thank you! It does indeed look a very good fit. I'd tried various combinations on Ancestry, but hadn't come across this one!
If you could find them on the '61 and '71 census too, that would be great.

This is my first posting on this list, so 'hello' to all fellow Carmarthenshire listers!
My 2x gt grandfather, David Thomas, was born in Llangenech in about 1846, son of Henry Thomas, a carpenter.
I have David's marriage certificate to Margaret Davies of Llangyfelach (Glamorganshire), 7/11/1874 which gives the following info:
Married in Parish Church of Bettws, David Thomas, aged 27,
bachelor, carpenter, residing in Llandybie.
Father: Henry Thomas,
carpenter
to Margaret Davies, aged 26, spinster, residing in Bettws.
Father: William Davies, farmer
One of the witnesses was Griffith Thomas (brother?)
I have found David, Margaret and various offspring in the 1881/1891/1901 censuses for Mawr, Glm, but unable to find 'my' David in any census prior to his marriage, or details of his birth to Henry and unknown mother.
Any help gratefully appreciated,
Lindsey
