Morning Helen
I had thought of that and contacted the Registra, she informed me that his birth details and place of birth was not entered as at that time it was not required!
Regarding his Army Record, I did buy one but turned out to be the wrong Evan Davies, so would need further advice
Regards
Susan

Susan,
Just a thought this morning - I'm surprised the death certificate didn't
say whereabouts he was born, however, I wondered if digging into his army
career might help find where he was born or at least a start to work
backwards, you did say he was a driver in the army? Just a thought.
Regards
Helen

Hi Helen
Evan was a Collier before he was a Driver in London, I do not know how long he was a driver in the army, and have no idea as to where he worked prior to his marriage!
Very frustrating I can tell you!!
Not only do I have Davies marrying Davies but also Davies in North and South Wales!!
I very much appreciate this help.
regards
Susan

Hello , and a Happy New Year to one and all.
I am hoping that after 5 years I might be on the verge of one of my brickwalls start to crumble!
But I need your help please.
I am interested in the Davies family living Penbank, Llanfihangle, Llanllwyn Carmarthen, according to 1881 Census RG11 5436, folio 54 page 3.
This is only a gut feeling but the reason I am keeping my fingers crossed is that my late Grandad Evan Davies brn 1868, father John a General Labourer, is that not only that but John's eldest daughter is called Irene, and when Evan married as to what I think but have no proof yet to his 2nd marriage his eldest daughter is also called Irene.
Now I know not to count my chickens but this feeling I have is making me want to prove I am right.
Can anyone offer any information on this family? I have at long last got a photo of Evan taken in 1948 his son's wedding, 18 months before his death.
Also again without proof I do think one of the wedding guests could be his sister as I can see a resembelance.
Please can anyone help me?
Kindest regards
Susan
Hi Susan,
Unfortunately, without knowing for certain where in Wales he was born, it's
like looking for a needle in a haystack! I did look up Lansdowne Place,
Blackheath on the 1911 just on the off chance he was there prior to 1914,
but I'm afraid no Davies! BTW, Blackheath comes under district of Lewisham.
I think you're only hope will be to ask more relatives for details, like do
they know where he was born, if at all in Wales, perhaps the family had
moved elsewhere? Any siblings, were they were born or living around 1911.
Maybe someone would know where he was a collier?
Regards
Helen

BTW,
apart from what you found on 1881 census, do you know for sure where he was
born?

Helen I have his marraige certificate and this is where all my confusion

Evan Davies 2nd April 1916 aged 30yrs living Lansdowne Place Blackheath,

Then when I got his death certificate everything went haywire!
Evan Davies 2nd Feb 1948 aged 80yrs, Coal Miner Retires, his son my Uncle
Edward John Davies was present at death.
To cut a very long story it has been proved that Evan did lie about his
age when he married, he was in fact older than his father in law!
This has been confirmed by relatives.
I know nothing about his life prior to his wedding, but right from the
start I had felt aged 50 yrs for 1st wedding seems a little unreal but you
never know!
All I know is that he was a driver for Army Service Core where he met my
gran, have been told whilst driving her father!!
They lived in Lewisham up until early 1930's then moved to Welwyn Garden
City Herts up until they both died.
Also they were bothmembers of The Salvation Army all their married life.
I might be adding one and one and making 3?

Hi Susan,
:) I know what you mean. Relatives always tell fibs! The things you find
out! Never be surprised by anything. I'll see if I can track him down on
the 1911 census. If he was born 1868, then he would've been 48 at his
marriage? hmm? Why did he go into coal mining after being a driver. Did he move
back to Wales?
Regards
Helen

Hi Susan,
I too am a Davies (through and through as it happens!). Can be a bit of a
pain at times, when they marry a Davies! :)
Can u give me all the info you have on Evan and any details on family. Am
I understanding right? You are not sure if the family shown on the 1881
Census is the correct one? But trying to fit with details that you have?
Do you know when Evan married, where and to whom? might help
Regards
Helen

Helen,
Thank you so much for your very kind offer.
I am very sorry but that was all the information I had, but saying that a
very dear friend on a friends site did say he found them in 1871 and couple
other Census's but I could not view any of that information.
I know I have no proof but only this feeling, and if this IS my Grandad, I
will be over the moon, as I myself come from a Davies family also from
Carmarthen so to have both sides would be magic!

Hi Susan,
Would like to help. Have you found them on any other census years? Do
you know where Evan lived most of his life, as I did find one married to an
Ann in Llanelly.

Hello , and a Happy New Year to one and all.
I am hoping that after 5 years I might be on the verge of one of my
brickwalls start to crumble!
But I need your help please.
I am interested in the Davies family living Penbank, Llanfihangle,
Llanllwyn Carmarthen, according to 1881 Census RG11 5436, folio 54 page 3.
This is only a gut feeling but the reason I am keeping my fingers crossed
is that my late Grandad Evan Davies brn 1868, father John a General
Labourer, is that not only that but John's eldest daughter is called Irene, and
when Evan married as to what I think but have no proof yet to his 2nd
marriage his eldest daughter is also called Irene.
Now I know not to count my chickens but this feeling I have is making me
want to prove I am right.
Can anyone offer any information on this family? I have at long last got
a photo of Evan taken in 1948 his son's wedding, 18 months before his death.
Also again without proof I do think one of the wedding guests could be his
sister as I can see a resembelance.
Please can anyone help me?
Kindest regards
Susan

OBITUARY FOR JOHN HUGHES 1819-1905
· The-funeral of the late Mr. John Hughes took place on Sunday. The Deceased was one of the early Bischoff pioneers. being here over 30 years ago. Mr. Hughes was a deeply religious man, over ready to assist any one who needed help; in early life a strong and vigorous man, but latterly feeble and frail but always cheerful and smiling. He died at the good old age of 86 years. His friends and Waratah will miss him
Good evening from Downunder Tasmania.
This is my first post one the list but I hope some others may find this of interest.
John Hughes ( Jac- Ty- Isha) was very prominent during the Rebecca Riots and was transported here to Tasmania. I have found many references to John but was only just made aware of the fact that he married a Lydia Gray in 1864 in Circular Head,an old garrison town on the North West Coast of Tasmania now named Stanley.
He certainly overcame his convict status in his later life. ( It was known as "having the stain") and settled into a little township of Waratah. He died there on 7 Jan 1905 and was buried in the Olde Waratah Cemetery. I am the council approved caretaker of this lovely place and have a website : waratahtasmania.com Here anyone with connection to John will find photos of his final resting place.
He does not have a headstone and it would be very difficult to pinpoint at this stage, his grave as all maps/plans have been lost or destroyed. There are steps being taken scientifically/geocologically to record the ground surface (gdr) and so hopefully one day we will be able to locate individual graves.
Should anyone wish a photo of the cemetery please email me.
Hope this maybe of assistance to some.
