Have you been able to trace the children further than 1871?

Hi Helen
Firstly I would think your best bet would be to track down the birth
of
the
younger child Mary which would be in the St Paul parish record
within
Llanelli as that is where they are living, what may have happened
is
that
they
may have given the wrong age for Ann in the census if she was
under
age
of
marriage without parents consent, so it may well be that they then
married
in 1842 when she was of age to do so. if you manage to find
Mary's
birth
cert it would also give an address which would also give you
information
to
track down the death of Ann within the period of 1851 and 1861 the
family
still seem to be living in the same area of Llanelli. the other
marriage
date for a Walter in Llanelly is 1866 and she would be using her
married
name, as she may have also been widowed.
I would go with Birth cert of William, David, Walter and Mary and
go
either side by a year as the census is not always correct in regards
ages.
you
have probably found that each research site also states age

I am trying to trace, correction, I've been trying what seems like

I cannot for the life of me find birth or marriage. However,
can
anyone
tell me what other areas nearby I should be looking at, that would
cover
the
area Llanelly?
On the 1841 census, parents Walter and Ann/e Williams are put as
aged
25
with 2 children. Archives could not find a marriage for them.
I
asked
the
Registry Office and they found nothing 1838-1840, however I did
find
one,
and only one marriage of a Walter Williams to an Ann Moss, it could
be
that
they put down 'married on the census'. Their marriage is 1842.
I
searched
for a baptism for the first two children Jane and William. The
only
baptism with the mother Ann they could find for a Jane Williams in
1838
(she put
aged 2 on the 1841 census) was in a place called Llangathen, which
they
advise me is north of Llanelly, but the father is not Walter!!??
Archives
could not find a baptism before 1838 for a Jane Williams, parents
Ann
and
Walter. Then in 1851, a few more children appear, and again I
cannot
seem
to
find any baptisms. Then by 1871, Walter married again, so I
thought
if
I
could get the second marriage, perhaps it would tell me a bit more
about
Walter and I could work back - how wrong I was! I know he
married
a
Jane
Thomas sometime between 1861-1871, Ann having died, as on the
1861
Walter
is put
as widower. But the only marriage in 1866 of a Walter Williams,
in
Llanelly is to a Jane Edwards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I found census for
Jane
Thomas and
it never shows her as being married before, always her maiden
name
Thomas.
So I'm thinking, either this family is fictious!! or I'm possibly
looking
in the wrong area?
So if they put Llanelly (and all of them did) on census, what
other
areas
should I be looking to for baptisms/marriages that would be nearby.
The
only thing I did manage to get was Walter's death certificate,
which
only
confirmed that he did exist and that he had a son called Walter
from
his
second
marriage.

I use findmypast which wasn't so explicit. Great you found that! It
certainly explains why I couldn't ever find them. I cannot find any baptisms or
marriage at all or death, it's as if the family didn't exisit! My
ancestor was the Mary Williams, shown on 1851 aged 3 months - and I thought that
one would be easy!
But the records office said they couldn't find a baptism for a Mary
Williams 1848-1852 for parents, Walter and Ann, and I tried Carmarthen twice and
Llanelli! The only one that could be a near match is David Williams that
came through this afternoon by email from Carmarthen Record office, my dear
friend Rebecca who found one born to a Walter and Ann nee Thomas in Llanelly
but the address didn't match the address on any census. If Walter married
an Ann Thomas, it might explain why he then married a Jane Thomas after
1861, could've been a sister? But they can't find a marriage for that one!
I'd be over the moon if you found anything else. Thanks for your help,
appreciated, you don't know how much!
Regards
Helen

On the 1841 census with Ancestry it states Llanedy Parish, Hundred
Carnwallan, district Llanelly.
Have you been able to trace the children further than 1871?

Firstly I would think your best bet would be to track down the birth
of
the
younger child Mary which would be in the St Paul parish record within
Llanelli as that is where they are living, what may have happened is
that
they
may have given the wrong age for Ann in the census if she was under
age
of
marriage without parents consent, so it may well be that they then
married
in 1842 when she was of age to do so. if you manage to find Mary's
birth
cert it would also give an address which would also give you
information
to
track down the death of Ann within the period of 1851 and 1861 the
family
still seem to be living in the same area of Llanelli. the other
marriage
date for a Walter in Llanelly is 1866 and she would be using her
married
name, as she may have also been widowed.
I would go with Birth cert of William, David, Walter and Mary and go
either side by a year as the census is not always correct in regards
ages.
you

I am trying to trace, correction, I've been trying what seems like

to trace a family, who on all census put they were from Llanelly,
Camarthenshire.
I cannot for the life of me find birth or marriage. However, can
anyone
tell me what other areas nearby I should be looking at, that would
cover
the
area Llanelly?
On the 1841 census, parents Walter and Ann/e Williams are put as
aged
25
with 2 children. Archives could not find a marriage for them. I
asked
the
Registry Office and they found nothing 1838-1840, however I did find
one,
and only one marriage of a Walter Williams to an Ann Moss, it could
be
that
they put down 'married on the census'.
Ann
and
Walter. Then in 1851, a few more children appear, and again I cannot
seem
to
find any baptisms. Then by 1871, Walter married again, so I thought
if
I
could get the second marriage, perhaps it would tell me a bit more
about
Walter and I could work back - how wrong I was! I know he married a
Jane
Thomas sometime between 1861-1871, Ann having died, as on the 1861
Walter
is put
as widower. But the only marriage in 1866 of a Walter Williams, in
Llanelly is to a Jane Edwards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I found census for Jane
Thomas and
it never shows her as being married before, always her maiden name
Thomas.
So I'm thinking, either this family is fictious!! or I'm possibly
looking
in the wrong area?
So if they put Llanelly (and all of them did) on census, what other
areas
should I be looking to for baptisms/marriages that would be nearby.
The
only thing I did manage to get was Walter's death certificate, which
only
confirmed that he did exist and that he had a son called Walter from
his
second
marriage.

I would still try and find further info I maybe wrong. I was surprised

I will keep looking tonight for you and let you know what i come up with,
As a shoe maker he may have travelled from parish to parish it doesn't state
if he was working for himself or for someone else.

The
only thing I did manage to get was Walter's death certificate, which
only
confirmed that he did exist and that he had a son called Walter from
his
second
marriage.

Sharon,
I just looked at my copy of the 1841 - top right, I suppose they wouldn't
put Llanelly as the parish?
It looked like Llanelly, but as you say could easily be Llanedy?
Geography was never my strongest subject.
Was it common then afterwards, to put on census Llanelly instead of
Llanedy? Do you know if this was a small parish?

Helen

Firstly I would think your best bet would be to track down the birth of
the
younger child Mary which would be in the St Paul parish record within
Llanelli as that is where they are living, what may have happened is
that
they
may have given the wrong age for Ann in the census if she was under
age
of
marriage without parents consent, so it may well be that they then
married
in 1842 when she was of age to do so. if you manage to find Mary's
birth
cert it would also give an address which would also give you
information
to
track down the death of Ann within the period of 1851 and 1861 the
family
still seem to be living in the same area of Llanelli. the other
marriage
date for a Walter in Llanelly is 1866 and she would be using her
married
name, as she may have also been widowed.
I would go with Birth cert of William, David, Walter and Mary and go
either side by a year as the census is not always correct in regards
ages.
you
have probably found that each research site also states age variations.

On the 1841 census, parents Walter and Ann/e Williams are put as aged

the

(she put
aged 2 on the 1841 census) was in a place called Llangathen, which they
advise me is north of Llanelly, but the father is not Walter!!??
Archives
could not find a baptism before 1838 for a Jane Williams, parents Ann

Walter. Then in 1851, a few more children appear, and again I cannot

Hi Helen
If you can find an address it will help locate the correct person. On the
census it stated Upper Wern. They will do a search for a period of time
either side of the date you give. I would assume that Walter would have
signed the death cert.
I recently asked at Camarthen records to look up a missing child for a
couple within my tree, I had the names of eight of the children and they kindly
found the 9th.
Maybe the first child was illegitimate, that is why I mentioned going for
the three younger children and not the first two, although i did find the
ones I sent you earlier
Have you tried the archives in Camarthen? you would be able to search
births of all the children along with deaths etc If you can't get there
yourself and can't find anyone to look for you then the staff are really
helpful and although they charge £20 per hour I doubt it would take them that
long to trace the family as you have so much detail.
If I wasn't in Winchester I would go and do the search for you. Maybe
another member is going to the archives and could do a look up

I am trying to trace, correction, I've been trying what seems like
forever,
to trace a family, who on all census put they were from Llanelli,
Carmarthenshire.
I cannot for the life of me find birth or marriage. However, can
anyone
tell me what other areas nearby I should be looking at, that would cover
the
area Llanelli?
On the 1841 census, parents Walter and Ann/e Williams are put as aged 25
with 2 children. Archives could not find a marriage for them. I asked
the
Registry Office and they found nothing 1838-1840, however I did find
one,
and only one marriage of a Walter Williams to an Ann Moss, it could be
that
they put down 'married on the census'. Their marriage is 1842. I
searched
for a baptism for the first two children Jane and William. The only
baptism with the mother Ann they could find for a Jane Williams in 1838
(she put
aged 2 on the 1841 census) was in a place called Llangathen, which they
advise me is north of Llanelly, but the father is not Walter!!??
Archives
could not find a baptism before 1838 for a Jane Williams, parents Ann
and
Walter. Then in 1851, a few more children appear, and again I cannot
seem
to
find any baptisms. Then by 1871, Walter married again, so I thought if
I
could get the second marriage, perhaps it would tell me a bit more about
Walter and I could work back - how wrong I was!
The
only thing I did manage to get was Walter's death certificate, which
only
confirmed that he did exist and that he had a son called Walter from his
second
marriage.

Sharon,
Sorry to bother you again, but do you know if there anyone who does lookups
for the area of Llanelly and surrounding areas for marriages?
Possible Walter Williams married an Ann Thomas - it's the nearest I've got
for years to a name! Date of marriage, well, perhaps 1836-1838 maybe before
I just don't know.

Helen

Thanks Sharon,
I didn't think about being under age? Interesting.
I have tried baptisms for all the children, but they say +/- 3 years, there
isn't one???
There were so many deaths for an Ann Williams between 1861-1871 that I
don't suppose the registry office would look to make sure which one?

They did tell me at the Carmarthen Registry Office that they only found one
certificate for 1838 which showed birth of Jane Williams to a mother Ann,
but not father Walter. They said this was the parish of Llangathen??

All born in County

Walter Williams, head, married, 35, shoemaker, Llanelly, Camarthen

On 1861, Walter is widower and 1871 it shows him with his second with

only thing I did manage to get was Walter's death certificate, which
only
confirmed that he did exist and that he had a son called Walter from his
second
marriage.

Hi Sharon,
Thanks for replying. On the 1841 Census at Wern, Llanelly, I have as
follows:
Walter Williams, Collier, 25
Anne Williams, wife, 25
William Williams, 2
Jane Williams, 3
All born in County
On 1851, Upper Wern, Borough of Llanelly
Walter Williams, head, married, 35, shoemaker, Llanelly, Camarthen
Ann Williams, wife, married, 35, Llanelly, Carmarthen
Jane Williams, dau, 13, at home "
Thomas Williams, 11, at home "
William Williams, 9, at home "
David Williams, 6, at home "
Walter Williams, 3, at home "
Mary Williams, 3 months "
Mary Williams, my ancestor, thought 3 months easy certificate - they can't
find one with parents Walter and Ann??????????
On 1861, Walter is widower and 1871 it shows him with his second with Jane
and 2 children plus 2 stepchildren, who although confirm to me I have the
right family, because one was a witness on Mary's marriage, still can't
understand where they fit into the family??? I think William on 1841 might have
died and also Walter aged 3 on 1851 died because there is another Walter
on his second marriage.
Thanks
Helen

I am trying to trace, correction, I've been trying what seems like
forever,
to trace a family, who on all census put they were from Llanelly,
Camarthenshire.
I cannot for the life of me find birth or marriage. However, can anyone
tell me what other areas nearby I should be looking at, that would cover
the
area Llanelly?
Archives
could not find a baptism before 1838 for a Jane Williams, parents Ann and
Walter. Then in 1851, a few more children appear, and again I cannot
seem
to
find any baptisms. Then by 1871, Walter married again, so I thought if
I
could get the second marriage, perhaps it would tell me a bit more about
Walter and I could work back - how wrong I was! I know he married a
Jane
Thomas sometime between 1861-1871, Ann having died, as on the 1861 Walter
is put
So if they put Llanelly (and all of them did) on census, what other areas
should I be looking to for baptisms/marriages that would be nearby. The
only thing I did manage to get was Walter's death certificate, which only
confirmed that he did exist and that he had a son called Walter from his
