Hi Pauline
Its raining here today, not very nice at all in regard to the issue of
surnames on the Carmartheninshire web site under Llangain parish Baptisms if
you type in Thomas as the surname you will see for the first page and a
half that there are no forenames for the father the surnames are double barrel
ie Thomas Roger for the father of William baptised 1784.
I also noticed it on another parish, but can't remember which one for the
moment. Could Richard please let me know if the surname is Thomas or Roger?
Hope you have a good time at the quiz
Best Wishes Sharon

Hi Pauline
Did you manage to check the page I mentioned in regard to no first name but
Thomas Roger for surname. It was the same for the whole page and a half no
one had a first name.

Hello Pauline,
I am looking for info about Margaretta Davies who married Thomas Lewis in
the register office Carmarthen 6th November 1920 .
Father of Thomas was John Lewis and Father of Magaretta was Jonah.
Thomas was 46 years, a widower and Margaretta was 35 years.
I have been trying to find them in the 1901 census and there are several
Johan with daughter Margaretta but don't match up. Maybe the age is wrong.
I would appreciate any help.

Ken,
Use Google Maps to search for "Lletty
Nest, Llanllawddog".
The large house to the south-east is Glangwili. According to Francis
Jones in 'Historic Carmarthenshire Homes', the "predecessor of the mansion
was a farm called Glangwili, which formed part of the estate of the Lloyds of
Ystrad Corrwg, in 1653. In the latter half of the 17th century the Lloyds moved
from Ystrad Corrwg to Glangwili where they built a new mansion. Successive
generations until 1835, when John Lloyd Price pulled down most of the old
house, and built a new mansion 'in the Tudor style, of considerable
dimensions'. His eldest son resumed the old family name in 1870, and was known
as Llewelyn Lloyd Lloyd, that surname being perpetrated by his descendants.
Most of the mansion was largely altered in the early 20th century".
The Coflein database has some details: http://www.coflein.gov.uk/en/site/266140/details/GLAN-GWILI,+GARDEN,+LLAN...

I have a Walter GRIFFITH born 1754. His wife was probably Elizabeth MORGAN.
The couple had 7 children in Laugharne Daniel 1797 William 1799 John 1803
Walter 1805 Thomas 1808 and my GGG Grandmother Martha 1810. There was also
Joseph born 1813.
Pauline was a great help to me in finding Walter although the children seem
to be a good generation "out". Have I missed a link somewhere? Any help
would be gratefully received.

I see that I did not include the era. It was between 1800 and 1878. What I
would like to know is what was the name of the large mansion that was next
to him in Llanllawddog. His farm being called Llettynest and is it still
standing.

Helen,
Thanks very much and thank you for the brief Welsh lesson.
I have no knowledge of Welsh and therefore I am reliant on Internet
tranlators which only work on direct translations.

CYFLWYNWYD YR IET HON GAN ......
THIS GATE WAS PRESENTED BY...................
CYFLWYNO- TO PRESENT/ INTRODUCE
GIET(GATE) BECOMES 'YR IET 'AFTER THE DEFINITE ARTICLE
HON- THIS
a number of different words for gate - this being one of them
the verse--
'BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO DIE (in the knowledge ) OF THE LORD '
You have taken the word GWYN to be white - which is correct -but not here -
the line follows the pattern of the beatitudes - all verses starting with
GWYN EU BYD.......BLESSED ARE......
Hope this helps,
HELEN

Dear CMN FHS,
Could someone try to translate an inscription on a stone laid into the wall by the gate to Capel Iwan graveyard just outside Newcastle Emlyn. We suspect that, being a blacksmith, our ancestor Jonah Evans may have donated the gates. The inscription reads: "CYFLW YN WYD YLET HON CAN Mr JONAH EVANS PONTSELY 1910". I have a photo of the inscription which I can send off list to clarify the lettering as it is not 100% clear and I may not have the spaces in the correct place.
In addition, on Jonah's gravestone at Capel Iwan, the phrase "Gwyn eu byd y meirw y rhai sydd yn marw yn yr Arglwydd" is engraved which roughly translated (by us!) means "White world of the dead are those who die in the Lord" which doesn't make a lot of sense. Can someone provide a more accurate translation. I also have a photo of the gravestone which I can send to clarify things, however, this is much clearer than the stone above.
Many thanks in anticipation.

Me again Robin
The place where Martha Griffith was born was Llangan
Carmarthenshire.....that is from my transcription of 1851 census....
I can check the original if you wish she was living in St Clears in 1851..
Pauline still cannot find their marriage!! If outside of Carmarthenshire pre
1813 I do not have those.
