Hello list,
Has somebody come across a wedding of Mary Ann Robert, born 22-12-1847, dau
of John Robert and Mary Morgan.
Possibly living at Columbia Row, Llanelli. So marriage could have been at
Sion. Not at Adulam as they were not near there like the rest of my family.
Her brother Robert Roberts married at Sion in 1886. He was born in 1862.

Hi Fee
On the Carmarthenshire FHS online indexes Llanstephan has pretty good
cover....the baptisms are from 1813-1882.......why do you say they only go
to 1837? The marriages are the only ones that stop at 1837......
Thanks for your help on this query.....

I've just realised you have linked the baptism to the census due to the
father's profession - it takes a while to get up to speed with another
person's research. The parish records for Llanstephan on the Carmarthenshie
FHS unhelpfully stop at 1837, and searching the indexes, it seems Williams
is worse than my maiden name of Clarke!
I'll see what I can find....

Hi Anne
I have indexed Llanstephan baptisms from 1813-1886 ....I have looked for any
Williams with the occupation of a tailor...there are two of them....both
with a wife Mary
1876 17th July
William Daniel Williams, son of David and Mary (aged 4 years), Llanstephan,
tailor
1878 7th November
Evan Thomas Williams, son David and Mary, Rose Cottage, tailor
1867 24th November
Mary Anne Williams, dau William and Mary, Llanstephan, Tailor
Harriet was not baptised there.....when did Mary the mother arrive in
Llanstephan, do you know?

Hi
I wonder if anyone could help - I am tying to find information on my
great grandmother Harriet Williams born abt. 1869 ( Llanstephan) who
appears on the 1871 census on ancestry as Hannah William! The entry shows
her living at Brook in Llanstephan with her mother Mary (Head - Tailor's
Wife - born in Darlaston Staffs age 24), a brother John Danish William - I
think this should be John Daniel and a sister Mary Ann, Harriet is aged
one.
I have seen a reference to a Mary Ann Williams being christened in 1868
at Llanstephan - her parents were William and Mary and his occupation was a
tailor. Where can I find out more?
This entry is on page 2 of the 1871 census for Llanstephan - on page 1
is another family of Williams - the father is Daniel and the mother is
Harriet - I wondered if these could be grandparents?
I seem to be up against a brick wall - Please could someone help me.
Thanks

Hi Pauline
Thanks for your help. I do not know when Mary arrived in
Llanstephan - all I know about her I have taken from the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census
which all state she was born in Darlaston Staffordshire in 1847. It has
taken me ages to find her on the 1871 census in Llanstephan due to
transcription error re. Williams / William on ancestry as I did not know her first
name!
I found her in Llanstephan on 1871 census after reading through
cesus and knowing that my great grandmother Harriet had been adamant that she
had been born in Llanstephan - she has put this fact on 1901 census. Also
Harriet's sister Mary Ann appears on 1871 census and Mary(mother) on 1871
census was born in Darlaston so I was pretty sure I had the right family.
I wondered if Mary had gone to Llanstephan in service and got married
there, maybe she is on the wedding registers? I do not know her maiden
name, all I know is that she came to Burnley with her children to find work -
some say she left some children in Wales - ? John Daniel (no one knew of
his existence until entry on 1871 census for Llanstephan). I do not know if
Mr Williams came with her to Burnley, all I have found is that on 1881
census she had a son William H Williams born abt. 1874 who we think may have
been called William Herbert as he was known as Bertie Williams and my great
grandmother Harriet had a son Herbert whom she named after her brother. The
census states William H was born in Burnley - but this may not be correct
as on one of the later census returns, older members of the family are
recorded as being born in Burnley - but when they have left home and completed
the census in their own right they have put Llanstephan and/or Monmouth down.
I think Mary lived in Llanstephan, had 3 of her children there and
then moved to Monmouthshire and later Burnley. She married for a second
time in Burnley in 1878 and her daughter Amea was born in that year - she is
recorded as being a Williams and also a Clark - the surname of her second
husband - so who her father was Mr Williams or Thomas Henry Clark(husband 2)
I am not sure.
She then had another son Thomas b.1880 who WAS born in Burnley and was
from the 2nd marriage.
Thanks for your help so far any help is appreciated
Anne
Hi there Anne,
It will help a lot if you can provide us with all the information you have. For example, you say that you have discovered that your great grandmother is on the 1871 census as Hannah William, (good catch btw) but not why you believe this to be your grandmother? Is it just the name and place, notwithstanding the faulty ancestry transcription? Are the entries for 1881 or 1861 for that family/location are any help? Did you already have information about brothers and sisters? On the 1881 census for Wales, I can find three Hannah Williams, born in Llanstephan between 1867-1869, and no Harriet Williams born in Llanstephan specifically, although there are a couple who just have Carmarthenshire as their birthplace. One assumes that as she is your great grandma, she survived past the 1881 census! Do you already have an 1881 entry for her?
I'm thinking you must have other, circumstantial evidence that lead you to think that this entry is right, but I am wondering what it is? If I am researching a family and find evidence which links them to a census entry, the first thing I would do would be to try to go back in time to the previous census. If you are sure this entry is correct, I'd be following the trail of the mother, Mary, in the first instance, I think.
You mention a baptism of Mary Ann - actually on the Carmarthenshire FHS site, I can find two at Llanstephan, one in 1866, Mary Ann Williams, daughter of Edwin and Mary, and one in 1867, Mary Ann Williams, daughter of William and Mary, which is the one you referred to. I'm wondering if there is a reason why you have rejected one and decided on the other, as there is a Mary as the mother for both?
I'll do my best to help if I can. I'm pretty good on census trails, and so with any extra information you can give, will have a look at them for you. To be able to go forward and back in time it would help to know her married name and husband, if you don't mind divulging it.

Hi
I did not put 1881 census details on as by this time the family had
moved to Burnley in Lancashire and Mary had remarried a Thomas Henry Clark.
The 1881 census gives the following information:
44 Tentre Street Burnley
Thomas Henry Clark (Head) -- 29 - General Labourer - born in Cornwall
Mary 34 - born in Darlaston, Staffordshire
Mary A 13 born Carmarthenshire - Wales
Harriet 10 born Monmouthshire, although she herself put on 1901 census
Llanstephan!
Emily 9 born Monmouthshire
William H 7 born Burnley
Amea 3 born Burnley
Thomas Clark 1 born Burnley
Mary and Thomas were married in Burnley in 1878 - so Amea could be a
Williams or a Clark and is refered to as Williams in 1881 and Clark in 1891.
The 1901 census Mary Ann states she was born in Llanstephan - hope this helps!

Hello Elwyn,
Long time no speak :)
There is a place just above Felinfoel called Dan Y Banc, is now mostly a
council estate but there are some older house along the old railway track
that ran up to the Colliery. I think it is even possible that I noted a
house there with the name Ty Dan y Banc, but not certain of that. I will go
check in the morning.
Best Regards
John Jones

I have photo from Lucas in Llanelli. From the age of my grandmother I would say it was taken about 1890. Regards, Susan
