Pauline,
I'm hoping you can help me.
I'm trying to identify the parents of my great grandmother Harriet Jones (nee Davies). She was born in Llanarthney around 1863-65 and lived there most or all of her life.
Harriet was married in 1883 at Llanarthney Parish Church and would guess that she would need to be baptised before getting married. But I don't really know.
I'm banking on her being baptised at Llanarthney Parish Church.
Looking at the birth records 1863 - 1865 registered in Carmarthen there seems to be 3 possibilities. There are two Harriet Davies and a Harriet Maria Davies.
I understand that baptisms could take place some years after a birth.
What I think might help me is details of all Harriet Davies baptised between 1863 and 1883 in Llanarthney Parish Church with a birth date 1863 to 1865. Hopefully, there will only be one.
I can see from the help you gave Sandie below that you identified one Harriet Davies baptism as follows -
Baptism 1865 6 Dec Harriett dau Thomas and Sarah
If you can help me in this matter it will be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
David

HI Sandie
Thomas Davies and Sarah Hughes married in the parish church, so you would
be better off purchasing the actual marriage entry from Carmarthen record
office (archives) if they could sign their names you will have the actual
signatures......
1842 12 August Llanarthney parish church marriages
Thomas Davies and Sarah Hughes
The transcripts are in CRO....
I have these baptisms from Llanarthney parish church
1823 7th January
Thomas Davies son Thomas and Margaret
baptisms Llanarthney
1843 13 August
David Davies son Thomas and Sarah
1845 28 Sept
John Davies son Thomas and Sarah
1848 6 June Mary dau Thomas and Sarah
1852 11 May Thomas son Thomas and Sarah
1856 13 June Richard son Thomas and Sarah ......died 17th April 1858 aged
2years of Heolfawr
1859 31 March Richard son Thomas and Sarah
1865 6 Dec, Elizabeth dau Thomas and Sarah born 1853
1865 6 Dec, Herbert son Thomas and Sarah
1865 6 Dec Harriett dau Thomas and Sarah
last three baptised on the same day.......if in Carmarthen these will all
be on transcripts, you could ask for copies of the actual registers......I
do not have abode and occupations on this index just name and parents....
Cannot find a baptism for Sarah Hughes in Llanarthney.......hope you did
want this information?

Cheers, Pauline.
I have the Carmarthenshire marriage index. I am after all children,
surviving and otherwise. born to Thomas Davies and Sara Hughes, my GG
Grandparents. I am really after transcripts so I can peruse at leisure
which I prefer to working on a screen. It looks as if I'll have to have a
head-down week in Carmarthen. People are very generous in family history
but I like to do as much as I can solo. Sarah was in the 1841 census as
being in service at Middleton Hall. The following is all I know so far:
1842 Thomas Davies, son of Thomas Davies, marries Sarah Hughes
1851 Part of Heolfawr - hamlet of Trechgwynnon - Llanarthne
Thomas Davies 30 ag. Lab (b.1821)
Sarah Davies 32 wife (b.1819)
David Davies 8 son (b.1843)
John 6 son (b.1845)
Mary 3 daughter(b.1848)
Thomas 2 son (b.1849) all household b. Llanarthne
1861 Heolfawr
Thomas Davies 40 farmer
Sarah Davies 42 farmer's wife
Anthony Davies 9
Eliza Davies 7
Richard Davies 2
Herbert Davies 1
Mary Bennet 85 widow lodger
1871 Barleymount - Treclase - Llanarthne
Thomas Davies 50 blocklayer
Sarah Davies 51
Herbert Davies 11
Harriet Davies 6
1881 Barleymount - Treclas & Myddfa - Llanarthne
Thomas Davies 62 Platelayer labourer
Sarah Davies 63
Burials register
8.8.1888 Sarah Davies of Barleymount
7.12.1898 Thomas Davies of Trallwm
My G Gf was Thomas and Sara's son John Thomas Davies who seems to have
run off to London by 1861 to make his fortune, which he did. He gets a
mention in Delyth and Tom Hughes' history of Llanarthne and there is a whole lot
about my GG Gf, Thomas, although I don't see where the coachman bit fits
in. Maybe he just obliged with the odd lift. I shall have to get hold of their
1842 marriage certificate and see who the witnesses were at their wedding
and who Sarah's father was. I have put off doing the Davies long enough.

Hi Susan
The only one I have (amongst many others) around that time is
1853 27th July Llanarthney parish church
William Thomas son of Thomas and Rachel.....
the one previous was in 1848 the one after was in 1857........
could this be him, how do you know his birthdate, this could be his baptism
if he was born in 1853.

Hi Sharon
Do any of my Griffiths corresponds to yours:
I have a John Griffiths born about 1842 Llanarthney, Father John Griffiths,
mother Mary (Davies possibly), siblings William Griffiths (b.abt 1829),
Alice Griffiths
(b.abt 1835), David Griffiths (08 May 1838 Mortell Hill Llanddarog). William
and John's birthplace from census records is given as Llanartney.
I don't think these relate any longer to Mabel's family, as this John was
conceived just before his father's (John) death in April 1841and therefore
birth was 1842 at the latest.
In 1841 Mary (Independent) was living at Drefach, Hamlet of Trecastell,
Lllanartney with William (13), Alice 6 and David 3. In 1851 Mary (pauper
Carpenter's Widow) and son John (age 9) were living at "No name" Hamlet of
Trecastell, Llanarthney in 1851 (HO107, Piece 2472, Folio 100, Page 14, and
were
together again in 1861 at Gellyglyd, Lllanarthney Mary (62, Housekeeper),
John 19 (blacksmith), John Rees (30, Grandson, unmarried, Shoemaker). RG9,
Piece 4134, Foli 74, Page 3.
Mary's maiden name of Davies is a best guess and could well be wrong.
My line comes from William Griffiths (Sawyer/Carpenter) who married an
Elizabeth Davies and who lived a Dyffryn Bach, Glyn Hamlet

Dear Mabel
I have information on the a Griffiths family of Llanarthney, John had
siblings William, Mary, Ann, Thomas, Owen,
He married catherine and they had children Owen, Mary, Esther, Thomas,
Christmas.
Does any of this information match?
If so i have traced the whole family as i am also tracing the Griffiths
family from the area. I have birth, marriage and death cert.
was any of your family Blacksmiths?
Best wishes
Sharon
Hi
My G grandmother was Lizzy Jane Evans in the census, but she was actually
Elizabeth Jane.
This could also be a possibility for you as they tend to put the name they
are called by rather than the name on their birth cert.
regards Sharon
Depending on what part of Llanelly they lived, the record could be in
Swansea if they lived in the Eastern part of Llanelly. I have had that
happen a lot with my family. So even though the BMD index says Llanelly,
part of it comes under Swansea.
Sarah.

Hi Listers,
My grt aunt was born 1886/7 according to the 1891 census. She was Lizzy or Lizzie Jane Thomas
This is my problem.
Her father David Thomas' first wife, Ann, died in February 1885.He didn't marry his second wife Rosetta Jones(widow)nee Morgans, until October 1890.All these events took place in Llanelly (I have the certificates)
Have checked in Llanelly register office and there is no record there of Lizzie's birth.Do you think she might have been registered in Swansea, to hide the fact she was born out of wedlock?
Would be grateful if anyone has any information or ideas.
Thanks,
Trish
Dear Helen (and Sharon)
You can search the probate indexes for the whole country at local
probate registries and at some libraries and archives too. See this
website http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/cms/1183.htm for more
information on this and on obtaining a copy of a will if you find one.
Best regards

Hi Helen
The important date for a will of that age is the date it was proved, not
when it was made.
It will have been proved some time after the death to which it relates,
and will be recorded in the relevant Probate Calendar according to the
date proven. County Archives will usually contain the Calendars for
Probate Registries in their area. Requests for copies of wills proved can
be made by post to the York Probate Registry.
If you can't find an entry in the Probate Calendar, it is likely no will
was made, or it was never proven (it may have been invalid for some
technical reason or the property to which it relates no longer existed or
was of no significant value at the time of death).
I hope this helps!
Best wishes

Hi,
Does anyone know the right place to find a will possible made in 1897? Is
there a way of firstly finding out if a will was made before requesting a copy,
if any?
Thanks in advance
Helen
