Guilds mainly existed in larger towns and cities where there were enough
tradesmen in a single trade to form one and make it worthwhile to
regulate and restrict the trade, which was their main function after the
medieval period (when it was mainly religious).
See Sir John Lloyd's History of Carmarthenshire
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/CMN/Lloyd8.html for discussion of a
wool guild at Carmarthen, but I don't know about survival of records.
Best regards

Hi (Pauline)
Moving on! Another search, if you would be so kind. I am trying to find out if there are any records of the births/baptisms of the children of Jonah Thomas and Elizabeth. Jonah was born about 1781 (not in the county of Carmarthenshire according to 1841 census) and Elizabeth (probably Rees) was born abt 1776 in Llanfihangel. I have a possible marriage for them on 20 Feb 1800 in Llangynin (part of the Derllys hundred). Jonah was orginally a Carpenter by profession but by 1841 was Publican of the Royal Oak, Furnace(Cwm Ddyche), Llanelli, he also appears in the 1833 register of electors at Cwm Ddyche.
Children I know about are:
Phoebe. B.abt 1812 Llanelly
William. B. abt 1808 ("In County", I suspect Llanelly but he died before the 1851 census)
Elizabeth. B.abt 1806 Llanelly
John. Who I am fairly confident was born abt. 1800 St.Clears.
Therefore it looks like the family moved from St. Clears to Llanelly sometime between 1800 and 1806, and then settled in Llanelly. St.Clears also seems to tie up with Llangynin (where parents married) as if you search for Llangynin on google maps it comes up with Llangynin, St.Clears, Carmarthen, Dyfed. (looking at the map Llangynin looks a really small place even now, so must have been tiny in 1800). Google says that currently the Parish church for Llangynin is St. Cynin and therefore was also possibly the Parish church in 1800? Elizabeth's birth place of Lanfihangel would fit in with a Llanfihangel Abercywyn, near St.Clears I have found on Google maps.
Many thanks
Roy
Hi Pauline
Thanks very much for your endeavours. Needes and Haystacks do come to mind!
The Margaret baptisms are useful for reference in case other unexpected lead
comes up wich might help link one of these to "my" Margaret.
I think "my" William must be buried elsewhere as this William is too young.
I think I have found a reference to mine in the 1833 register of electors.
William Edmund of "K"erberdeg is in the 1833 register of electors for the
Commott of Carnwallon. The "Nature of his qualification" is "Freehold
lease". This points to him being older than 18 and a likely candidate for
the husband of Margaret. I will get a copy of the entry in the Cambrian
newspaper from Swansea Library to see if it has any more details on his
death notice "William Edmund of Henberdeg, Lllanelly on 7th June 1834 from
the Cambrian Newspaper". For anyone who hasn't used this resource it has
provided me with some potential leads, as there are several entries over the
years that cover BMD and news items from Llanelly:

Hi Sandie
Thanks for this information, very interesting.
Thing is I should have said 1901......I have found him in Birmingham
Industrial School 1901 aged 14, but a lister said that when they were next
in the area for Birmingham they would look up the register for me to let me
know when he was there and when he left.....
thanks again

Hi
Watching programs like Who do you think you are(?) they quite often trace more details by accessing a particular guilds records and/or finding apprenticeship documents. I was wondering whether such institutions/documents existed for Carmarthenshire trades in the 19th century and therefore if a relation was say a Carpenter I could trace his membership of a guild etc? Does anyone know? If they do exist where would I find them?
Thank you

Hi Pauline.
Thanks for looking. I have Richard and Margaret's marriage and census
details. It's frustating, I can't seem to identify Richard's and William's
parents with any certainity only as a best guess. In 1851 Margaret's birth
place is given as Pembrey so is it worth looking in Pembrey Parish records?
Also in 1841 Herberdege comes under Llanon, another possible alternative?
Unfortunately I don't know if they were non confirmist, that Richard and
Margret were married at St.Eli suggests otherwise?
Their prospective mother Margaret is in the 1841 census at Herberdege as an
Edmond age 60, with a John (20), Sarah (15) and Mary (10). By 1851 she has
moved onto Caerbrenin as an Edmunds(and is still there is 1861).
In 1841 William appears as Willm Edmond at Caerbrenin with wife and family
and in 1851 (as an Edmond) at Herberdeg so it looks like he has swapped with
his mother as he is at Herberdeg while she is now at Caerbrenin. (he is
there in 1861, 1871, but in 1881 was at Caerbrenin)
The above swapping between Herberdeg and Caerbrenin plus Margaret's age
suggest she is Richrard and Wlliam's parents. I also have a link between
Richard and William Edmund from the the Llanelly Petty sessions (issue 113)
17th July 1865. Where Richard Edmund of Caerbegin and William Edmund of
Herberdeg were ordered to pay 1 shiling a 3 pence to their mother.
Unfortunately the extract I have doesn't give the name of the mother.
The father as William again is a guess as I have a reference to a death of a
William Edmund of Henberdeg, Lllanelly on 7th June 1834 from the Cambrian
newspaper search index. No idea of age, but seems to fit given I have also
found a marriage of a William Edmund to a Margaret (Thomas) in Llanelly in
1804 (fits with Margaret's age).

Hi Sarah
Thanks very much for that.
By the way, I've got three Bassetts in my tree. Ann, born 1809, married Benjamin Price 1826; William Thomas Bassett, born about 1898, married Elizabeth Mary Saunders in 1924; and William's father David, nothing known.
Any interest?
Can't remember if I've given you these details before.
Richard

Charlotte Hellewell, born about 1881, to see who she was living with?
In the later census, was there a John Whitaker, born about 1878, living
anywhere nearby? She'd have been in London.
Many thanks
Richard

Hi
I was talking of this place a while back as my grandfather Bertie Thomas Russell was in this Industrial School in the 1891 census, classed as a 14 year old tailor.......from what I know he did not go into that trade. He died in 1930 of TB.
I have lost who said that when they had the time and in Birmingham area they would look this place up for me.
Can anyone remember, or is that same person still subscribed.
regards and thanks Pauline

My lot are all various Williamses, firstly from Pantyclogau then
Newfoundland, Gwynfe after which they moved over to Love Lodge (Llety
Gariad) at Fairfach. They tended to haunt the Tabernacle Independent at
Fairfach. One of my great Gran's brother, Griffith Williams, married the
widow of the Kings Head who was by then Mary Roderick (her husband died very
young) nee Jones and daughter of the William Jones who had the Kings Head
before Morgan Roderick took over. My cousin looks after the family history
stuff at the parish church. My grandparents (Edith Simpson and Albert Edward
Davies)were married there and I think my uncle, John Albert Davies, was
baptised there round about 1914/15. Having come from a good chapel family,
Edith did a "there's posh for you" and went over to the Episcopalians.

I have indexed Llandeilo fawr baptisms and I am currently indexing the
burials, I have looked to see if your family were mentioned in these parish
registers, but so far no luck!!
I will keep an eye open for that public house, sorry I cannot be of any help

Hi Richard
Thanks for this info. Most interesting. My grandparents lived at Pwll
and I remember walks around there in the late fifties and sixties.
Best wishes

I was just looking at Llandilo Fawr generally, trying to find out something
about Llanarthney, when I came across something in the following website:

Don't know if that takes you anywhere. And I don't need the recipe, thanks!!

HI Gaynor
As I stated in my previous email, ask Carmarthen registry office if they
have a marriage of these two people....they will let you know if they have
one, but you would have to purchase the certificate to obtain the
information.......or purchase a birth certificate for one of their children,
which in turn will give you her maiden name........
They are very helpful there, and would ensure you have the correct marriage
from your given details.....sometimes purchasing a certificate is the only
definate answer
regards Pauline

Hi
I would be grateful if anyone with access to Parish Records would be able to check for any recordings of Baptisms/Births to the above parents. I am hopeful they are parents of my gt--gt-gt-grandfather Richard Edmund(s), born abt, 1811 Llanelly. William Edmund and Margaret Thomas were married 21 May 1804 Llanelly and I think lived at Herberderg/Henberdeg farm near 5 Roads Llanelly. I believe Richard also had a brother called William.
Thank you
Roy
Hi Gaynor,
I'm not sure when they had their first child, but I have found a possible
marriage.

John George to Amiah Williams
Q4 1858.
Is that too late?
regards,
Sarah.
