In case it is off use to anyone else I have managed to find that Hengoed was
covered by enumeration districts 21-24, and that Furnace references came
under Enumeration district 24 pages 20-26.

Hi Margaret
Unsure if this is him in Llangendeirne baptisms
1799 15 Nov
John Thomas son of David
or
1804 6 Jan
John Thomas son of David
there is this one for Mary
1811 6th Nov
Mary Thomas dau David
these two did not baptise their children in the parish church. Where did
Mary the daughter marry from......
I can only see one marriage in Llangendeirne
1823 31st March Llangendeirne
John Thomas Cwmheidre and Mary Thomas of Cwmheidre
Perhaps Mary's age at death was recorded wrong......it was only as good as
the information given. My g.great grandmother lost 10 years by the time she
died........instead of 88 they gave her age as 78.....full age at time of
marriage should have been 21, but they did not have to give birth
certificates at that time, so again only as good as the information. My
grandmother on her marriage in 1907 stated she was 21, when she was actually
only 17.......

Hi Pat
thanks, I know you are always busy helping everyone with their queries and
indexing .......there is no rush as you know.......but, I will not send to
CRO until the transcript and separate index are ready......they requested
the monumentals as the word spreadsheets.....the index is a bonus that I
though would be handy for them to have.....
have a nice week-end

Interesting point why Lettice wasn't buried
next to Evan in Llandybie parish churchyard. Given the age at which he was
still fathering children he seemed to have been a bit of an old goat so she
was probably horrified at the though of spending eternity in the same lair.
Maybe he fathered so many children that they ran out of Rees space by the
time they got round to her.. Otherwise, her brother the surgeon, having
invested in a lair might have had space left over for the wife he doesn't
seem to have had so Mary decided to use it lest it get wasted. I'm
interested in Lettice's mother Mary being the apparent sister of a surgeon
who appears to have been born in Worcester, which isn't that afr away but
still not in the area. One day I shall find out a bit more about her parents
and background when I catch up with the marriage register. I see from
Lettice's marriage register entry from Llandeilo PC that she was illiterate.
I now have some Llandybie stones
and connections to investigate. It is the likes of people like Pat Powell
who do the vital work of MI transcription, etc who provide the stuff of
which family history is made.

This is sheer rambling, but sometimes I like a good witter on the boards.
Many thanks to all who responded to my sin eating
posting. Here's a bit of a ramble because it obviously struck a note. On one
of the links I noticed it was said to be prevalent around Llandybie where my
GG Gran was baptised. I swear I read about it in my excellent History of
Llandybie (well worth buying) but have mislaid my copy.
Another link mentions Welsh immigrants to the
Appalachians. Must be Harlan County and the Kenticky coalfields. I never
actually thought of there being Welsh there, even though it's so obvious.
This is because I know plenty of "crossover" folk songs from the area whose
melodies are English/Scots/Irish in origin but not Welsh. The only crossover
song I know of was collected in Ohio and brought back over the Atlantic to
be published by the Workers' Music Association. It appears in a publication
called Coal Dust Ballads which are rarer than hens' teeth and contains a
collection of mining songs in 4 part tonic sol-fah harmonies. I have one,
haha. It was called A Miner's Life and set to the tune of Calon Lan (sorry
my computer doesn't have diacritical marks for typing Welsh), which is a
hymn rather than a folk song but hymn tunes and folk melodies have been
interrelated over the centuries.
I also looked up the web site about the 2007
film the Last Sin Eater - must see if there's a DVD. I'm currently trawling
Bookfinder for a copy of the book on which the film is based. The film was
made by Michael Landon Jr, son of Little Joe Cartwright from Bonanza who
used to be my childhood heartthrob - remember da dada da dad DA da, etc?
If anyone knows of any good web sites for
DVDs for movies about Wales, please share them. Carmarthen board os sooo
friendly and interesting - you are lovely people out there . I was wondering
if anyone knew of a Welsh company which had DVDd a version of Silent Valley.
Guess I'll have to hit the google button on that one.
Last night I tried my cousin's ancient
family bara brith recipe at choir (in the Scottish Borders) and they all
went wild over it. We'll have to start a recipe thread next.
Again, many thanks to all the
generous souls from this board.

Hi
Does anyone know which of Llanelly's 20 enumeration districts Hengoed and in particular Furnace, Hengoed came under in the 1871 census. I want to search through the relevant census records to find if there are any instances of a John Davies or Esther Davies living in/at Furnace in the 1871 census.

Could anyone help please, with what might be a simple translation?! I would
be most grateful.
I'm trying to write "Wishing you many happy returns on this special
Birthday. Hope you have a lovely day. We will think of you. With much love".
Many thanks in anticipation. I know that not always you can translate exact

Hi Pauline
In answer to this question and your other one.
The MI's are nest to each other so they could be inscriptions on two
sides of the same stone maybe.
The numbers are 848 and 849

on the written one.......
These M.I's have been transcribed by a member of CFHS for Carmarthen Record
office and CFHS members online data.....Pat in turn is doing a wonderful job
to index from the transcription.....so real team work here ...
let me know the number so I can check prior to sending to CRO........
thanks Pauline

I'd like to get into a bit of Welsh rural social history. Does anyone have
any anecdotes about the funeral custom of sin eating? Food was laid on the
body of the defunct and individuals earned their living by consuming this
food in order to ingest the sins of the departed so that the journey into
eternity would be sinless and heaven assured. (No, I haven't been reading
Phil Rickman after a cheese supper). Sin eaters were apparently shunned by
community. When was the last decade or so this took place?
Any reading refs, etc greatly appreciated.
Sandie Reed
Hello Sandie
I am currently indexing the MIs for LLandybie
My transcription gives the year as 1833 for Evan Rees but as I didn't
make the original transcription I can't say whether it was unclear or
not - If you have seen the grave when you went there last summer let me
know and I can add a note in the index.
Looking at the fiche of burials from the parish register it gives 1835
so it seems as if that must be the correct year.
There is a burial of John Griffiths Williams Rees of Glan-cennen aged 15
on May 22 1824 - do you think this is what the other part of the
inscription should say?.
Sometimes gravestones are very difficult to read.
Here is the MI for Evan Rees:-
In memory of John G. Rees third son of Mr Evan Rees of Glancennen in
this Parish who died on the 18th of May 1821 aged 11 years.
Also in memory of the above said Evan Rees who departed this life the
11th of November 1833 aged 80 years.
And here is the MI from the grave of Mary Rees.
To the memory of R P Williams Esq., Surgeon Rx of Cuelodge in the Parish
of Llandeilofawr in this County who died on the 2nd day of July 1857
aged 82 years.
Also in memory of Mary Rees of Cuelodge who died the 29th day of April
1860 aged 87 years being the relict of Evan Rees of Glancennen in this
Parish and sister of the above named R P Williams.
I think we have spoken in the past re Lettice Williams as once upon a
time I thought she was connected to my family.
I see later if I can answer any more of your questions.
Cheers
Pat

Hi All,
Does anyone have any information on my Thomas family, from Llangedereine, in
particular John Thomas born abt 1801 in llangedereine, In the 1841 census he
is living Dyffryn Farm, Llangedereine, with wife Mary born abt 1811, son,s
william born abt 1832, John born abt 1841 and daughters Anne born abt 1835
Mary born abt 1837 and Margaret born abt 1838, in 1851 census there is another
daughter Jane born abt 1844.
Any information on John Thomas, as too who parents were, baptism or
marriage details would be appreciated.
Another query I have is, in the 1841 census it says Mary (daughter) was born
abt 1837. Mary Thomas was my gr gr grandmother, she married in 1845, the
marriage certificates say,s she was of full age, she died in 1897 age 68, that
would have made 16 when she married, would that be classed as full age.
Thanks for any help
Margaret
My GG Grandma, Lattice Rees, was baptised at Llandybie parish church 14 Mar
1813, the daughter of Evan Rees, farmer of of Glancennan, and his wife Mary.
GGG Grandfather Evan was buried at Llandybie PC Nov 16 1835. I would
appreciate being pointed in the right direction to find out when Mary died.
Mary and Lettice were living at Cui Lodge (went there last summer) in 1841.
Lettice married William Williams and went to live at Llaty Gariad (Love
Lodge), Fairfach, Llandeilo. I would also like to find out when Evan and
Mary married, who their fathers were and who the witnesses were, plus who
Lettice's siblings might have been. Are there any transcripts of the
Llandybie registers held anywhere?
Another hole in my enquiries is that nobody seems to know where
the census data for Love Lodge might be for the 1861 Carmarthenshire census.
Not even the superb people at Carmarthen Archives know - did it go walkies?
In return for help I could do look-ups for the 1891
Carmarthen census plus I also hold the London and Middlesex 1901 data. Also,
I am red hot on Northumberland and Durham.
