Hylo/Shwmae Pob,
The enclosed link shows a descendant of David Morgan
who founded the first Iron works in
Pennsylvania. He was a Welshman probably from west Wales and with iron
founding experience, two of whose descendants were the notorious twins
Thelma (Morgan) Furness (2ndVsces) and Gloria (Morgan) Vanderbilt.
The website owner above may not know that, but that is another matter.
don't let that put you off.
Does anybody have any knowledge of the forebears/siblings of David
Morgan in Wales? We think that James Morris Morgan was his father. We
had a new world James Morris Morgan (Recollections of a Reefer) 19thC
confederate navy.
In fact my question may have answered itself; that Bridget Morgan of
Llanwinio was the sister of David Morgan and wife of Richard Howell,
whose headstones we have on .gif.
David Morgan was the father of Col.George Morgan the latter known as one
of the founders of the colony, a great adventurer, businessman, man of
wise judgement, plentifully recorded, descended 'not' from Kings(!), a
wise law maker in the new world.
Regards Gar
PS I merely wanted to prove that boh my late ma and late pa were related
to Tony Furness (decd 1995) in two different ways; my late ma through
the Furness family and my late pa through David Morgan, gentleman of Wales.
QED.
In reply to Emyr's forwarded message, re Amelia Earhart
I hope that they use Dai Harvey Thomas as the boatman, as he was my
grandfather and the person with Capt Fisher who rowed them ashore........

Anna,
Thank you; that is better than the possibility that it was the
name of a ship, either on which somebody sailed away or
which did such good service that one's daughter was named after it!
OR it was not uncommon AND it had spanish American connections.
Attempting to incorporate thirteen new states in to a new, huge
country, to which many relatives had departed
was also surely something to be remembered every time one called one's
daughters name?
The southern states of the USA. What Anna says is useful though. thank you.

Margaretta was not uncommon in West Wales in the eighteenth and early
nineteenth centuries - I have seen several examples in Carmarthenshire. I
think it was simply a variant of Margaret - no Spanish or American
connections

Margaretta Eleanora Morgan born in Penybryn Cardigan 1772-1844
m Sylvanus Howell b Llanwinio Carmarthenshire 1772-1830
I am looking particularly for any history/genealogy about
MEM above.
The name seems to be French or Spanish at a time when the southern
states of the USA were
being argued over, and trnsfers made between France and Spain.
Three generations were given the name Margaretta Eleonora gen1) Morgan
2)Morgan 3)Lewis
so it is important to those doing the naming!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baton_Rouge,_Louisiana
Thomas Gibbes Morgan was there in 1799, rather later (itinerant lawyer
and judge,U/SA)
It is likely that the first Margaretta Eleanora Morgan was named,
thinking of a historic event which affected the family Morgan in America
in some way.
But what?!
Regards,
gar
Hi Pauline,
The daughter Margaret Hughes per the 1851 census is age 12 and born in
Llanfairarybryn.
The mother Mary Hughes was born in Cardigan, Llandewibrefi.
I have not been able to find David and Mary Hughes in the 1841 census. The
child that comes after Margaret is Thomas who was age 6. Then David age 3, and
Rees 13 mos?.
I have just sent away for the birth certificate for Rees, hopefully that
will give me some better info.
My gggrandmother was their daughter Mary Hughes (born 1856) and I am going
off of the info on her death certificate, and that is where I get the info the
mother was Mary Jones. Such common names, hope this all makes sense.
Thanks.
Donna

Hi Donna
I cannot find them married pre June 1837 in our marriage indexes.....the
only David Hughes to a Mary Jones was in 1816.......
The marriage normally took place in the bride's hometown, but if living
outside of the area would probably marry where she was living at that time.
Where in Carmarthenshire was their first child born?

Descendants of Thomas Howell (b1543)
Thomas Howell 1727-1799 m.Phoebe Morgan 1736-1819
Sylvanus Howell 1772-1830 b Llanwinio m Margaretta Eleonora Morgan 1772-1844
I am interested in the Morgan siblings of these two women, probably
earlier than later,
(and any known emigration to the new world Rhode Island).
