To All Welsh researchers
We all know how invaluable the I.G.I is to our research, we also know that
it is a transcription of original records, so therefore we must all go back
to the source in case of mistakes and also other information not used in the
transcription.
For Welsh researchers there is magor flaw with the Welsh I.G.I especially
the online version, baptisms and christenings pre 1815 are indexed by the
fathers christian name. This is because of the lack of knowledge by the
Mormon church about the patronymic naming system which was used for
generations throughout Wales. To say that in most Welsh counties that
families had not established a surname by the 18th century is untrue. I have
carried out a huge amount of research in Monmouthshire and a tremendous lot
in Glamorgan & Breconshire, and I can say quite confidently that by at least
1700 the vast majority of Welsh men & women in these 3 counties were using
surnames, and by 1750 I have never come across a family without one, and I
guess it may have been the same in the rest of Wales.
The records themselves for past 20 years + have come from the bishops
transcripts which date from 1725 with a few odd years from about 1695. I
personally think and again I am quite confident about this, if the L.D.S
centre at Utah converted their Welsh baptisms to indexed by surname, it
would help those people researching a great deal.
There are no easy tricks before anyone makes this suggestion of munipalating
the online index to work your way around this problem. I have records of
many English families who came to Monmouthshire and Glamorgan before 1815,
but when you search for them on the I.G.I they are simply not there because
you dont know the fathers christian name and it is the same for Welsh
families.
Here is a small example in my own family in Carmarthenshire these are
children born to Stephen & Elinor Smith who have been indexed by the surname
Stephen
3. MARY STEPHEN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 07 SEP 1809 Llanfairarybryn, Carmarthen, Wales
4. THOMAS STEPHEN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 28 APR 1807 Llanfairarybryn, Carmarthen, Wales
1. JOHN STEPHEN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 28 MAR 1803 Llandingat, Carmarthen, Wales
I think as Welsh family historians we should organise some sort of campaign
to encourage the L.D.S church to reverse this error so we can really enjoy
their dedication to family history, which can only advance our own.

Thanks Alan
Your information has eliminated this family from my search because my Martha's father was called David. I am gradually narrowing the field.
Thanks again
Gill
While tidying up my papers, I came across this worngly acquired
ceritficate - happy to pass it on to anyone who might be interested:
Elizabeth PERKINS, born 27/9/1879 at Meadow Lodge Llannon Carmarthenshire
Daughter of John PERKINS, coalminer and Hannah DAVIES.
Denise
I have found my JOHN family in 1841, but haven't managed to find them in 1851. My gt-grandfather, Thomas JOHN was in Glamorgan in 1851, but now I would like to go back another generation, to his parents.
In 1841 they were living in Rhythyndwn, Llangunnock. There were my 2xgt-grandparents - David JOHN [50 yrs] and Mary JOHN [45]. The 1841 census does not give much information
Regards, Joy
Hi Pauline,
Yes it was the REGISTRY Office that told me this not the Archives! They said the certificate only has the names of groom and bride with the date and place of marriage. And then it apparently says on the certificate to refer to parish registers for further information. Strange isn't it? How do I go about finding out whether the archives has a record of this marriage in the St. Mary's parish registers?
Lynn

Hi Pat,
The Carmarthenshire Records Office said they found the marriage record. They have since further verified Poeby HOWELLS and John JOHN married November 7, 1837 at St. Mary's in Whitland but apparently the certificate has no other information except to say to refer to parish records for St. Mary's for more information. This is the first I have heard of this and of a groom & bride listed separately in GRO indexes. Sorry to have troubled you again Pauline about this.
Regards,
Lynn

Hi Lynn
Where did you find the reference? Looking at the Index Phoeby Howells is
Narberth 26/795 and John John is Narberth 26/797 so they do not match.

Hi Lynn
When you say you have the entry from the record office, is that the
archives?.......strange why no other information on it......have you
contacted the registry office for the actual certificate to ask if the
marriage certificate gives fathers name and occuption.....the actual
marriage in the parish register at that time should have the information,
wonder why it does not have it.....but Llanllwch after 1837 to about 1845
vicar did not bother to list fathers name and occupation.
Worth trying with registry office, unless that is where the information is
from......
No trouble Lynn, that is why we are here to try to help everyone with
queries, if just to let one know where to go to look for it.....
Let us know if it was from the record office (archives) or the registry
office that the information was from
thanks Pauline

A few days ago I was told about an entry in the 1891 census for Penboyr which recorded a Martha Jane Williams aged five .. living with grandparents. Can anyone give me further details from this record. I have found another possible entry in Glamorgan and I am trying to gradually eliminate the various options I have found.
Thanks
Gill
Hi Pat,
The Carmarthenshire Records Office said they found the marriage record.

Hi Pauline,
Have found a marriage reference for ggggrandfather John JOHN who married ggggrandmother P-H-O-E-B-Y (yet another variation of spelling her name!) HOWELLS in December qrt. of 1837. Do you perhaps have a marriage for them with this spelling instead? Thanks.

Thank you very much for all the help to find my family in Llanboidy.
I have been to Llanboidy but until now did not have a clue where to start
looking for the family home.
Thanks again

Hi David
yes, prior to 1813 the baptisms very rarely gave mothers name....so if that
is there it is a bonus.......after 1812 they did give parents names, abode
and occupation.....which does help when a popular name!!

Thanks Ron..We are on the same page. Was in this process when teenage
grandson spent the weekend and took over the computer to play games. Will get back
on it today...Bill

Re Taffywilliam query
If you put Mary Williams at Llandovery into FreeBMD for 1851 to 1861 you
get 28 marriages. For each one you could check the other names on the
same page and see if one is a Lewis. It would take a long time and might
not give a definite answer but family history isn't easy. And that's
assuming that they got married in Llanfairarybryn or nearby. It would
help if you had Mr Lewis's full name.
