Hi List,
Can anyone be of assistance to help me trace my Great Great Grandparents William Richards and Martha Evans. They were born Llandovery and later moved to Merthyr Tydfil then Gelligaer in Glamorgan.
William was born about 1818 in Llandovery. From his marriage cert I see that his father was also William Richards , a labourer. At the time of his marriage William was living at Ystrad Walter (which I believe was a farm) and he was a Labourer. He married Martha Evans on 28 April 1844 in the Church of Llanfair ary Bryn.
Martha Evans was the daughter of Josiah Evans an Excise Officer. She was living Maesllydan at the time of her marriage in 1844 and was a servant. I believe Maesllydan is a large ancestral home. I am also having trouble tracing her and cannot find her living with her family in 1841. I did find a Martha Evans in 1841, age 20, Ag Lab, Female Servant living with John and Margaret Morgans. John Morgans was a Minister living Cilycwm Llandovery. I also found a Josiah Evans , preacher age 50, living at the Red Lion Public House LLangadock Carmarthen. I wonder if Josiah, who was an excise officer in 1844 then became a preacher and left his daughter Martha with his minister friend John Morgans whilst he travelled around as a Minister. Does anyone have any ideas how I could try to prove that ?
The only William Richards son of William Richards that I could find in 1841 was living Hamlet of (Looks like) Cilearw LLangendeirne. I tend to think this is not the family as the father William is a Mason and the son William is age 15 and should be 23. (The children seem to be exact ages, not to the nearest 5 years). Someone once gave me baptisms for the children of William and Mary Richard in Llandovery and I think this could be the correct family. If anyone can assist to help me confirm this I would be very grateful. Children of William and Mary as follows:
Sarah Richard chr 11 Dec 1814 Llandovery
William Richard Chr 2 Aug 1818 Llandovery
Anne Richard Chr 15 Jul 1821 Llandovery
Does anyone have more children to this couple and any further info on this family ?
Any assistance really appreciated.
many thanks

Got your message through Bill,
Unfortunately I don't know any more of Cordelia Evans siblings. She married
in Bedwellty in 1840 to a David James. Thats why I was hoping someone might
have information on her birth c1821 in Llanfairbryn to Morgan Evans and his
unknown spouse.

Dear Hywel,
I am sending this via the Carmarthenshire group because it was bouced back
to me.
Below is all I have on my mother's family. I recognise David Arthur
the sexton - I thought he was mine for a while until I enlisted the help
of a professional researcher. I am sure the families are linked but
where they join up I don't know. The main difference that I can see =
is that mine were all non conformists up until the time of my =
grandfather Albert John Arthur who married Edith Mary Diana Evans who =
was church and not chapel. They were also lay ministers in the chapel. =
My lot lived at Veney Hamlet in Abergwilli but went over the border =
to Pembrokeshire to the Glandwr chapel at Llanfyrnach.
In the 1841 census Evan Arthur is in Veney Village aged 70 and a =
Fisherman 3 doors away from your David Arthur aged 50 a Sexton with his =
wife Mary 45 and children David 20 Hanry 15 John aged 14 and Anne aged =
10. Four doors on from Evan aged 70, fisherman is David Arthur, =
weaver aged 35 with his wife Elizabeth 35 and children - this is my =
David Arthur 1804. I am sure that there were other children of my =
family below but I have not found any baptism records for them.
I hope this all helps

Hi Diana,
After some of my ancestors left Carmarthen in about 1840, they moved to Rhymney to work in the mines and iron industry. I have been able to get much info regarding those buried at St Davids there.
Please let me know where the Bedwellty church is located because that might be another avenue of research.
Thank you,
Robert

I have been researching Daniel D. Davies (B) Jan. 31 1826 in Llanllawddog S/O David & Mary Davies. I have some new info. on him. In 1836 at the age of 12 he and a friend went to Ebby Vale Monmouthshire to work in the mines. In 1848 Daniel & his friend Daniel Phillips a native of Swansea came to the U.S.
Daniel Davies is very successful and starts a church and names it St. Davids after the church he want to in his youth. He said he was born near the
Glangwilli Castle. I see their was a St. Davids Church in Carmarthen but it seems to be to far away from Llanllawddog to go to in his youth. Could he be talking about when he lived in Ebby Vale. Can anyone give me more info. on Glangwilli Castle.
I would be interested in any info. on Daniel's family. It is as follows. Father DAVID who first married Anne and they had John (B) Nov.4 1810,William (B) Oct.22 1812, Mariah (B) March 20 1814, Anne (B) March 15 1817,Elizabeth (B) March 15 1819, David (B) Oct 1 1821. David then married Mary and they had Daniel (B) Jan 31 1826, Thomas (B) March 31 1828, Benjamin (B) Dec. 18 1830 Sarah (B) March 4 1833, Evan (B) April 26 1836, Richard (B) ??. After Mary's death Sept. 28 1860 David married Margaret Thomas Aug. 24 1867. They had Ann and Richard.
David died between 1875 and 1881. Daniel, Thomas and Evan came to the U. S. Daniel in 1848 Thomas and Evan in 1860. Some say that one of the girls moved to Queensland Australia.??
THANK YOU KEN. sawdust48@ zoominternet.net
Hi
I think you mean Glangwili Mansion (rather than
castle), which is in Llanllawddog. You can search for
Glangwili Mansion under Google.
Sorry I don't have anything else but it's EBBW VALE
(pronounced "ebboo").
Good luck.

Hi Tom,
I am sorry I meant to reply sooner. My cousin was married to the 'son of
Clogyfran', Hugh Evans in the early '60's. Sadly they have since separated.
I don't know a lot about the Evans family, but I think it is still the same
family as all through the census. I would guess that the John Evans there in
1841 was a brother to your Ann. He was married to a Mary Richards in
Whitland in 1829. There are several of their young children buried in
Bethlehem graveyard in St Clears, as well as grown up children. There are
photos of these graves on the St Clears CD. Apparently their sons also
farmed Zabulon farm, next door. There are also baptisms of their children in
Bethlehem Chapel, see Family Search or CFHS site. So they must have been
Independents. It might be worth you getting in touch with Hugh Evans,
Clogyfran, Pontyfenni, Carms . clogyfran(a)clogyfran.plus.com to see if he
knows more.
Although Clogyfran is off the St Clears - Whitland road there is an old
footpath or track that leads from Clogyfran to Llanddowror and is only
about 1.5 miles. Brixton is on the old road from Llanddowror to Laugharne,
coming out at Cross Inn, and is close to that junction. It is about 3 miles
from Llanddowror. Clogyfran is a very old farm, and was a former Manor
house. There was a High Sherrif of Carmarthen from Clogyfran in 1546, a John
Phillips, same family as Picton Castle, Pembs.
Hope this is of some help to you,
Best wishes,
Elizabeth
