Hi List,
Some help or advise would be greatly appreciated.
I cannot find a Richard Vipond born 1838/9, IGI have a birth date 10 June 1838. I cannot find him on BMD. He could be born in any one of three Counties Carmarthenshire, Glamorganshire or Monmouthshire The spelling of the Surname Varies so much on ancestry, I have found Vissond Nipond, Nepond Bipond Bipon Lipond Jipond I have tried nearly all computations on the key board but still not found him!!!
I saw a comment that Births and Deaths did not become compulsory until 1874, Mirages 1837 can anyone confirm? I think it was compulsory for all three from 1837, hence my belief that I should be able to find the birth cert for Richard, and the place that his father's family William born Cilycwm area? 1807 were living at that date. William born Cilycwm 1825, Thomas born [?] 1828 Joseph born [?] 1827 were Richards brother's none can be found in the 1841 census.
If regressing a birth WAS compulsory how can I go about finding it by date and first Name any ideas would be appreciated.
David Thomas.
Dear Robert
I can see from CFHS 1851 census index that only a few are from St Peters the others are from different areas of Carmarthenshire....
I have these in St Peters children to John and Elizabeth, but I cannot see John Hinkin/henkin in the earlier ones....
1801 18th Sept - born 6th inst
Mary Hinkins dau John and Elizabeth
1804 22 July - born 4th inst
John son John and Elizabeth
1806 7th Sept - born 25 Aug
William son John and Elizabeth
1809 15th Sept born 1st inst
John son John and Elizabeth
1816 29th Sept
David Henkin son John and Elizabeth, Priory St, Flax dresser
I have two children baptised to a Thomas and Jane
1822 8th March born 6 Aug 1819
John Hinkin son Thomas and Jane, Under the bank, shoemaker
1822 8th March born 30 Jan
Thomas Hinkin son as above
There is also an illigitimate child
1803 15th Aug - Charles son John Jones by Mary Hinkin

Hi Pauline,
My 5x gr grandfather John HENKIN married Elizabeth EVANS at St. Peter's on 10 Feb 1799 by the Thomas Price, Curate. My Carmarthenshire rellies have shown up as HENKIN, HINKIN AND HINKINS.
You mentioned that you are indexing Carmarthen St. Peters and I have the following question. Thank you for being patient with the following:
In the 1841 census were the following...
1...CMN HENKIN's that were born c. pre 1831:
Elizabeth c.1776, John c. 1776, [both from above], and, Thomas c.1826
2...CMN HINKIN's that were born c.pre 1831: Rachel c. 1775, Elinor c. 1786, William c. 1786, Mary c. 1791, Anne c. 1821, Sarah c. 1821, William c. 1821, and, Mary c. 1826.
3...CMN HINKINS's that were born c. pre 1831: Jane c. 1781, Thomas c. 1776, Mary c. c. 1781, Mary c. 1806, Anne c. 1816, and, William c. 1826.
Have you come across any HENKIN, HINKIN, HINKINS in your indexing of St. Peter's?
Thank you for your help,
Robert
PS:As a comment on surname spellings I have [much kind assistance] tracked my main HINKIN family thru the census'. They have shown up in 1851 as HINKIN, in 1861 as JUKIN, 1871 as HINKIN and 1881 as HINKINS. In BMD's they show up under HINKIN, HAIKIN, HINKER and HINKINS.
It does pay to check out variant spellings of your ancestors surnames

Hi Pauline and listers,
Please could someone be so kind as to send me a copy of the 1861 census for Swansea. I really thought I had it, but cannot find it anywhere, must have been dreaming, seem to do a lot of that lately!!!!!
The names I am looking for are;
John Jones- journeyman ropemaker-24-born Swansea
Mary Thomas-22-born Newport Mon
They had a daughter on the 9th March 1861, Mary A. Jones,b. Swansea, who may or may not be on the census, it depends on when the census was taken.
I've been looking for John and Mary's marriage and cannot find it in Newport, so they may have married in Swansea. Until I find her marriage I cannot find her birth as there are 4 Mary Thomas's born at that same period.
Any ideas please?
Thanks,
Jenny 5007
Hi, as you all know I am 'still' indexing Carmarthen St Peters am now on 1831.....its a long haul along with indexing other projects....
We had a discussion about the 's' after Howell or Howells Robert Roberts etc etc.....and other names of course and some said it cannot be mine as mine does NOT have an 's' on the end....well look at this .....
1831 17 Aug born 5th July
Jane twin daughter of David and Jane HOWELL, Quay St, Mason
1831 17 Aug born 5th july
Maria twin daughter of David and Jane HOWELLS, Quay St, Mason
The same vicar and one entry after the other, so when a person says that cannot be mine, of course it could be, it depended on the vicar what he wrote........!!!
Just thought I would share this with you....

Pauline,
In you indexing of St Peters you wouldn't happen to have come across a
Samuel Owen born around 1774, died 1852 would you? I've a whole stack of
info on him including census, death certificate, mention in the tithe
papers, entry in the St Ishmael BT in 1796 which appears to be his
marriage to Mary Rowland & will but no mention of his birth.
Any help appreciated!
Andrew

Dear List members,
I have recently discovered a genealogical chart of the family of the Barons
Carbery of County Cork in Ireland, who descended from John Evans of
Limerick. The chart shows the Welsh ancestry of John, which begins with a
certain David ap Jevans, who married Margaret VERCH LEWIS AP RHYS, probably
in the late 1500s. David's father was Jevan Ap Thomas, and his mother was
Gwenllian Verch Rhydderch ap Rhys.
I do not know where the family originated in Wales. However, the chart shows
a descendency passing through Elystan Glodrydd and extending into the early
first millennium.
Can anyone who is familiar with early Welsh genealogies indicate a published
or original source for this genealogical chart. Or more modestly, how would
I identify the original home of David Ap Jevan?
Sincerely,
Roy Keys in Montreal
forwarding for Jack...

Hi Andrew
Thanks for this write up re tithe's how wonderful to have them printed out
and framed........wish I had thought of that!!
The tithes for Wales are also housed in NLW - some but not many are housed
in Carmarthen record office for the Carmarthenshire areas....
Cannot remember off hand now which ones are in CRO but if you send an email
they will certainly let you know....if you are closer to Carmarthen than Kew
that is...

The tithe records can be accessed at the records centre in Kew. They come
in two parts (from memory) - the map itself and the notes. The process
itself had to do with changing over from the old tithe system which varied
across the country to a unified tax system. The amount of paperwork that
exists really depends on how much argument there was over the valuations.
The documentation takes the form of minutes or meetings, valuation notes
and letters from the valuer to London. They can contain a wealth of
information down to what your ancestor grew in a given field together with
notes of what he said in a given town hall meeting. There again it might
just hold a bare note of valuations without any mention of individuals.
Often you'll also find a straightforward listing of who owned which farms
together with the occupant's name (head fo household only) and size of
farm. It really is hit & miss though.
The maps themselves can be lovely. They often cover an entire table-top
and have to be rolled out by hand. You'll need to go to the large
document reading room in Kew (upstairs). They can be copied (not cheap)
and I did a copy of both St Ishmael & Tirabad (Breconshire) and have them
printed out onto canvass & framed at home in my hallway. Most people even
seem to think they're originals.
I've not found a parish that had nothing on record although the coverage
is rural parashed only.
Good luck
Andrew

Thanks to everyone who gave me information about the tithe lists. I can see how they will be a good resource for me to look at on my next visit to Wales.
Mona
Hi Mona
The following information can be found on the Tithe Apportionment Schedules
which accompanied the Tithe Maps. The latter showed all the properties and
land in a parish all of which were allocated a number. The Apportionment
Schedule gives details of the Landowner, the Number allocated on the plan,
Occupier, Name and Description of Land and Premises.
Three copies of the Tithe Maps and Schedules were produced for each tithe
district. Parish copies were kept with other parish records and many have been
lost. Copies for the diocesan records that survive are usually in County
Record Offices. A third set was sent to the Tithe Redemption Committee and are
now at The National Archives (TNA). The Tithe Apportionments are in Class
IR29 and the maps in IR30. I would suggest that you download the TNA leaflet
on the subject from their website _www.nationalarchives.gov.uk_
(http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk)
Only about three quarters of parishes were covered and the percentage varies
from county to county.
Bye for now
Joy
