My search for kin is for the living and the dead and have amassed
considerable research both in Carmarthenshire and Scranton, Pa. Consider it
of utmost importance to follow ancestors not only from point of origin but
to present day ties in this land across the pond..Keep in mind that many of
our kin came to States and often married spouses of Welsh origin and many
generations of children were born who in turn wed who continued the process
When one spots a surname from the same place in Wales and same place in the
states .. it provides an opportunity for those who so desire to seek and
share to complete the story of their ancestors lives. At our reunions we
oldsters bring photo albums and family histories to share with the younger
generations knowledge of their Welsh backgrounds and those who have gone
before.....Bill

Hi Ian
I found these, there is one that I think is belonging but the vicar has
written Edward and Margaret instead of Elizabeth
1813 7Sept
David Rees son Edward and Elizabeth, Ddolgon farmer
1815 2nd Aug - Margaret as above
1817 11 March - William as above
1823 4 May - Thomas as above
this was the one which I do believe to be belonging to the ones above but a
mistake by the vicar...I have looked at the original entry and it does give
Margaret not Elizabeth
1820 27th August -
Edward son Edward and Margaret, Dolgoy D.K, farmer
These registers are being indexed for Carmarthenshire Family History Society
online indexes, if you have lots of family in this area its well worth while
considering becoming a member.

Hi Jackie
With the industrial revolution and the industries coming to Wales, Llanelli
and Burry Port both had Copperworks .......my g.g.grandfather worked in both
the Llanelli one then moved to the Burry Port Copperworks where he worked as
a furnaceman........
They have long gone, but if anyone has a chance to purchase the book
'The Industrial and Maritime History of Llanelli and Burry Port 1750 to
2000'
ny R S Craig, R. Protheroe Jones and M V Symons
its a very large heavy book.........if you do have interests here this is a
very informative book....

Hello!
I just joined this list after several years on the Glamorgan one. I finally located some of my ancestors (with help from a volunteer lookup) living in Llanelly in 1841. They were all in the US by 1850, so the 1841 is my only hope!
Does anyone recognize this bunch?
1841
DAVIES Daniel is 30 a Copperman
wife is Miriam (also listed as Mary, etc.) 30 children Sarah 10, Anne 8, Elizabeth 6, John 4, and Hannah 1
By 1850, they were in Baltimore, Maryland, and had children Ann, b. 1843 (I assume the first Ann died?); and Daniel, 1846. All children b. Wales
Daniel Davies' brother was David W. Davies, b. abt. 1800(maybe a little earlier), married to Mary Ann (various spellings). He also was a copper smelterman, but he came to the US before Daniel. He was first in New Jersey, then in Baltimore. He MAY have been in Nova Scotia, also.
David W. Davies had at least 3 children, Thomas D., b. 1822; Sarah; and John, who came to the US. All the men were copper smeltermen.
These Davies men later sent for more Welsh copper men from Llanelli and Swansea to join them in Baltimore.
I would be interested in anyone who had relatives come to the US to smelt copper. I will also help, if I can, with US research. I also have a REESE line connected to these DAVIES people--also copper men from Wales.
Thank you!
Mona
Hi, Jackie! Yippee! Another kindred spirit! As I wrote, my copper smelter men were DAVIES (changed to DAVIS after arrival in US). I also have REESE. Did any of your ancestors come to the US? Specifically to Baltimore? My original REESE line ended up in Montana smelting in Butte for Anaconda.
I will be happy to share what I know, if you think it will help.
Please let me know!
Mona

Hello Mona.
My davies family begins with my great great grandfather, Rev. Theophilus
Davies, leaving Llanelli in 1881, settling in the Plains / Wilkes-Barre area
of Pennsylvania , and he sent for his wife and children the following year.
Theophilus was born in 1846. He had brothers and one sister: David, Daniel,
James and Harriet. Theophilus was the oldest, so I'm not sure if your David
is my relative. Do you live in Wales?

Susan:
Just place The Evening Post, Wales, & it should locate "this is South
Wales Evening Post". You'll find the Llanelli Star, The Evening Post & The
Carmarthen Journal all listed in a box to the left of your screen. Good
luck, because not one of those posts bothered to respond to my emailings.
Pauline is the one who helped me locate descendants, & suggested initially
to try the newspapers, but again, no luck. Davies is a very common name in
Wales, so unless we found a common ancestor, we might find we're more NOT
related.
Please keep me posted on your progress.
Patty

Gday Pauline,
I already know Johns occupation and I have the
address's for where he was living in 1841 and 1851 so I am not sure there is
much to be gained from getting the baptism records.
I was thinking if I got Ann Jones death certificate it may have an address
or an informant that might throw more light on the subject but I know your
death certs are pretty thin on information.
I get the distinct impression that my search for more information on the
Jones side of my family will falter at this stage.
Thanks again
Trevor

Hi,
I guess I had read about your Theophilus before. If they are related, it would be a distant relationship, I think, and with such a common name, hard to figure out. Copper smelting was a closed profession--handed down from father to son, so many coppermen are related somehow--but I have not found more than one or 2 people looking for smeltermen!
I live in WI, but have been to Wales in 2005 and plan to go again in the spring. Where do you live? There was a Benjamin Davies who was a minister in Baltimore, but I am not sure if he is related to me or not. (His daughter married into our Davies line--which they changed to Davis, after arriving here).
Good luck!
Mona

Have you tried BBC Wales, Patty?
They may help.
Locating DAVIES family in Mid/West Wales is a daunting task as I am sure you
realise but with the recent JONES' reunion held in Cardiff perhaps there is
a case for a similar get-together for DAVIES' perhaps in Carmarthen?

Patty, I have some relations who are Davies, but I don't know if they are
in your line. Now you've got me wanting to find out. How do I reach the
Llanelli Star by email? Thanks, Susan

Hello to all.
I sent emails to all three of the local Llanelli newspapers requesting
assistance in locating living Davies relatives in Llanelli, with no success.
Does anyone have any suggestions what other venue I might be able to
contact to aid in my search? I'm at a loss as to what to do at this point.
Locally, we will have a biannual Davies/Williams reunion and it would be
wonderful to report back to family here that I was able to contact living
descendants of the Davies families. Even greater would be locating some of

Hi,
I am interested in hearing about your DAVIES family. I have DAVIES who, for at least a brief time (maybe longer), lived near Llanelli--this would have been sometime between 1800-1845. The men I know of were all copper smelter men, which may be a clue to narrowing the family down. My direct DAVIES family moved to the US in the late 1830s-mid-1840s, the first to leave was David W. DAVIES, b. about 1795-1800. He might have gone to Canada first, but was in New Jersey in the early 1840s and then went right to Baltimore, Maryland, within a couple of years. He had a younger brother Daniel who joined him in Baltimore, along with David's grown sons, Thomas D. DAVIES and John DAVIES. They then recruited many more experienced smelter workers from the Llanelli and Swansea area to come to Baltimore.
Thanks for any info on your DAVIES line.
Mona
