Re your request on Lodges and Gatehouses
This is not worth much but my g/g/grandfather ( Thomas Griffiths) was the Gamekeeper at Upland House in Llandeveilog in the mid 1860s, he lived ( with wife and seven children) at the very small Lodge at the entrance to Upland house, called Upland Lodge.
There are two small lodges that flank the entrance to a very long drive way to the mansion ( Upland House) they are on the side road off the the A484 to Carmarthen just after you pass Crugen Fawr ( on the Towy side)
The coordinates for the Lodges are 240647, 212858 and for the mansion are 240358, 213601. At one point the deputy Lord Lieutenant of the County lived there. In 1841 the mansion is occupied by a Roger Everest and family with 6 servants.
My great uncle William Pugh Griffiths was born at Upland Lodge in 1865 ( not the mansion!), he later became a draper, had three wives and seventeen children. Several emigrated to the USA and there is a detailed record of them (over 4000) at Ancestory.com ( Griffiths-Ramsey GEDCOM). Before moving to Upland Lodge the family farmed at Nantbendigaid Farm in Conwil Elvet parish, 200 acres, must have been quite a come down!!
I have some low resolution aerial photos of the pair of Lodges and a copy of the 1891 map showing them, if you wish a copy drop me a message and I can mail them to you.

I seem to be moving out of Carmarthenshire with my research and into the Brecon area, |Llywel

Is there an organisation such as CFHS where questions such as you deal with can be sent.

Hi Pauline ,
Many thanks for that 1851 census entry . Could you tell me please if this
was the only young James Richards in Llangunnor , as according to his Memorial
Card he was 51 when he died on Feb 8th 1892 , which puts his birth about
1840-41 .....though the 1871 census says he is 27 , 1881 says he is 40 & 1891
says he is 52 , so I am wondering if there was a James Richards in Llangunnor
1851 about age 10
Do you know If the 1861 Llangunnor census is only available at Carmarthen
Records Office for viewing ?
As regards to James Richards marriage to Harriet Evans .........the 1871
entry for Harriet had me confused , her mothers name also bering Evans ...of
course it could be her mother in law , or Harriet could have been an Evans who
married another Evans .
The birth cert of their son David John Richards on Oct 3rd 1874 gives the
mothers name as Harriet formerly Evans .
I dont know of any other children born to James Richards .
Thanks again for your help

Carol Jones
Hi Carol
Here is the 1851 census entry for James Richards
Llangunnor 1851 enu dist 3A sch 32 page 12
Onwchey???
John Richards head mar 47 farm lab born Llangunnor
Elizabeth Richards wife marr 46 born Llanarthney
Mary dau 14 born Llangunnor
John son 9 born Llangunnor
James son 6 born Llangunnor
Daniel son 1 born Llangunnor
You say that his future wife was a widow, so Evans was not her maiden name??
Perhaps that is why you cannot find a marriage.......do you have her maiden
name from one of their children's birth certificates?

Ron,
I have a recent picture of the Penhill Lodge in the parish of Mothvey, where my ancestors were gatekeepers in 1841 for Llwynywormwood Estate. If you are interested, I send it to you in an e-mail attachment.

Hello
I was wondering if anyone had any resources that might help me . I am trying
to find out more info on my mum in laws family before her visit to
Carmarthen next weekend .
I have a JAMES RICHARDS in 1871 age 27 , blacksmith , born Llangunnor ,
lodging at Chequers alley , Carmarthen . I would love to find him in earlier
census if possible .
I also have his future wife in 1871 HARRIET EVANS at 2 Masons Arms Rd, St
Peter , carmarthen , aged 33 , widowed ? , with 1 yr old daughter HANNAH EVANS
and her mother ? FANNY EVANS age 78 , all born Carmarthen (St Peter) .
I would love to find them also in earlier census if possible .
I have tried unsucessfully to find their marriage .
In 1891 the family are at Moss Lane according to the census , but i am
confused as they lived at Mill Street as far as I know . Was there such a Lane ?
James Richards died Feb 8th 1892 at Mill Street , Carmarthen and interred at
St Davids Churchyard .
Their son DAVID JOHN RICHARDS was born on Oct 3rd 1874 at Dame Street ,
Carmarthen . He was my mum in laws grandfather .
We do not know what happened to Hannah Evans , the child from Harriets first
marriage .

Hello
Rowland ARTHUR was born in Carmarthenshire, unfortunately I cannot understand the name
of the place mentioned in the original 1881 census for Tymaen Street, Michaelston-Super-Afon, Glam.
All other census just say Carmarthen.
The 1881 British census CD has it as 'Llanwenog' but I believe this to be incorrect.
If someone has access to the enumerators entry for the above, I would be very grateful
for help with the place name.
Thanks in advance
Brenda

Hi
I have joined the Camarthen list in the hope of finding some information for
a friend.
Her great grandfather, Owen Purcell Phillips, was born at Saundersfoot c.
1856, son of Thomas Phillips and Eliza Morris
who were married in the Narberth Registration District in the March Quarter,
1847.
By 1861 Eliza was a widow, living at Coalpit (or Coppitt) Hall, St Issells,
with her children .
I am hoping there is someone on the list who has access to the 1841 Census
for St Issells who can look up Thomas
Phillips, he may have been living with his parents at that time. I do not
know his father's name yet but I know
his mother's name was Susannah, born about 1786 St Issells (the
grandchildren were living with her in 1871).
Also, if someone can find Eliza Morris (born about 1818, St Issells), I'd be
most grateful.
As I am new to research in Wales, if anyone has any advice for me
about any on-line resources, I'd
be very grateful.
I have joined the Carmarthen list as I understand Dyfed Family History
Society has produced
various transcriptions which cover St Issells, and I am hoping some kind
person can do a look up for me.
Regards
Eunice Cubbage

Hello Amy
Did you see my second e-mail - this time about the other Evans family?
Unfortunately I didn't change the subject line so you might have thought
it was a duplicate mail.
If you have deleted it let me know and I'll send it again.
Cheers

born 1871 (or there abouts) in Cilycwn I am trying to find any details I can about her parents etc in 1891 she was with her uncle Thomas Jones in Llanfabon Glam he also came from Cilycwm. Her parent must have been a brother or sister of Thomas and this might help me find his parents. There were at least 4 Thomas Jones in Cilycwn in 1841 census

Hello Marjie (I like how you spell your name)...
My EVANS' immigrated to Waushara and Green Lake counties of Wisconsin.
Funny that you have McCARTY. That spelling is the spelling of the
McCARTHY line I am descended from (so when talking to my family, I
usually use "McCART(H)Y" in my ramblings). Of the three McCARTHY
brothers that came to the US (that we know about), the brother I am
descended from kept the McCARTY that I guess they named him upon
immigration. I have some McCARTHYs in PA, but they were from a line
that reestablished the H.

UPDATE ON CD AVAILABILITY:
Just to let you know that Glamorganshire 1841 on digital images is nearly completed after several months of hard work...as this has a searchable street and name index too -as with the other 1841 sets it also can be searched by parish, hamlet, township, etc.........!!!
So, we have nearly completed the Whole of Wales for 1841, which we are very pleased to say.......
Details will be on our web site soon, same price as all the other 1841 sets........
http://www.carmarthenshirefhs.co.uk
regards Pauline
Hi Alan
You personally cannot access 1851 census index, you can ask if I have them
in my database, as this index is not available on any CD.
I am still currently indexing this.......if I had just compiled street and
name I would have finished this project a long time ago, but I am typing the
whole transcript....
regards Pauline

Thanks for all your (the collective your) help so far. Here are some
specifics...
Pat Powell wrote:

I know! LOL... I have the same problem with my Irish line. They are
McCARTHY from Cork county, where McCARTHY is the most common surname in
that timeframe. Ugh.
> Can you tell us where the birth year information came from? Was it from
> another census? Could you give details?
This family came to the US in the mid 1850s (around 1854-56) according
to the US census, the dates that subsequent children were born in the
US, and Margaret's obituary. I compiled the approximate birthdates from
the 1870, 1880, and 1900 US Census (I haven't found them in 1860).
> Have you found any of them in the 1881 census?
No, because they were already abroad :) If any were left behind, they
are ones I don't know about.
> I would gues your Joseph and Margaret married after July 1837 ( as I
> can't see a very good match before 1837) so have you looked for their

I will be doing so, but I am not sure on Margaret's surname. My
grandfather has it down as EVANS, and that COULD be possible, but I am
not sure. I will have a go at it though.
> If you had a copy of the marriage certificate that would give you

If I find a likely match and want to send off for it, I may be back
asking how to do so. :) I have never sent away for a certificate overseas.
Thanks!
