Hello Anne
That would be a Mantua Maker I would think - you see quite a few of them
in the census.
A mantua is a type of gown or overdress.
Cheers

Hello Pat
Thanks for your info. I do not think that the Louisa Evans shown in 1851 is
the same person. I do not have her marriage certificate.
However, in the 1881 Census Louisa is shown as living in Laugharne with her
husband James Richards as under:
James Richards Head Age 41 farmer
Louisa Richards Wife Age 38
Mary Dau Age 17
Ann Dau Age 13
Lydia Dau Age 11
Morris Son Age 9
Martha Dau Age 7
Jane Dau Age 3
John Son Age 1
Also in the 1881 census in Laugharne is a Mauric Evans age 37 farmer b.
Laugharne and a David Evans age 52 farmer b. Laugharne. These may be Louisa's
brothers.
Regards
Henry
Hi Althea,
All of the Mathews Family were born in Llandebie with the exception of the
youngest boy Thomas who was born in Llanedy. I also found an Elizabeth
Mathews age 20 who was a lodger in the same area she was a "MANTGO MAKER" I
have no idea what that is or was. She too was born in Llandebie and could
well be the oldest child of William and Rachel.
Anne
Hello Althea,
It's Anne again I found the following in Enumeration District 3a of Llanedy
Parish
Ty-Ar-Lone
William Mathews age 52
Rachel Mathews age 43
John Mathews age 16
Rachel Mathews age 14
William Mathews age 9
Thomas Mathews age 4
I found these on the index later on I will try to find them on the digital
images and that will give us place of birth and occupation. We are in a deep
freeze here in Canada the temp has not been above -15 for weeks and with the
wind chill factor often -35 so I am happy to be indoors on the computer.

Hello Henry
Are you sure about the 1843? The only one I can see in 1851 in Laugharne
is aged 1.
Do you have Louisa's marriage certificate? - that would confirm her
fatjer's name.
Here is the 1851 entry:-

Ann " WI M 26 CMN Conwil
John " So 5 CMN Llangunnog

I am interested if anyone is searching in Llansawell.
My ggg grandfather was William E Jones and the history
of Llansawell calls him an old soldier.
Does anyone know how I would find out where he served
in the English army? He was born in 1796 or 1798, so
would have been in the army in the 1820's. He was in
for about 21 years. Any help would be welcome.
Thanks
Bill Dennis

do you think he may be belonging somewhere....too young for your David Price
I know, could be son or something....where was Daniel born, what information
do you have on him so that we could perhaps find the father....

Hello Cathy
When the occupation on the census in the 1840's states writer - it
usually means he is working as a clerk.
A good writing hand was not something that everone had and therefore it
was a useful skill.

Hi Anne:
I see your Caleb in the online 1881 census and the Ty
Newydd I'm looking at does appear to be his neighbor.
I've been trying to find a way to build a connection
between the Harriet Jenkins at Ty Newydd in 1881 and
my Jenkins ancestor's sister, possibly with a
different surname, who died at The Mote in 1888. Pat
is suggesting The Mote may be a residence such as the
Ffos-las-uchaf farther northeast up that road, or
something in that vicinity, because of the way it
appears in the 1841/51 census.
Kevin.

I think in the 19th century use of the word your 'writer' might have been not an author but someone earning his living as a solicitor's clerk for example - writing records and letters, not creative writing.
Anyone more expert than I who could confirm this?
Also, his record in the 1841 and 1851 census might tell you more - perhaps you have checked for this?
Good hunting
Phil

Hi Kevin/Pat
Is the Ty Newydd you referred to next to Llwyntreharne, Llangynin? If so, my
great grandfather Caleb Morris was born there, 1861. My g grandfather's Ty
Newydd has long disappeared.

I am looking for information on Methusalem Davies, born about 1834 at Eglwys
fair a churig and his wife Mary Williams born about 1844 at Llansadurnen or
Laugharne. They married at Rama Chapel Llandefeilog on 13 June 1866.
Methusalem's father was William Davies, born about 1796, died before 1851.
His wife was Ann, born about 1803, still living in Eglwys fair a churig in
1851. Mary William's father was John Williams, born about 1810 in
Laugharne. His wife was Martha also born about 1810 in Laugharne.
Any information confirming dates of birth of Methusalem and Mary, the
marriages of their parents, etc. would be appreciated.
Thanks a lot, a newcomer to the Carmarthen site.

Hi Althea,
Me again, something else for you to think about - on the 19th Sept 1829, a
David Thomas married Susannah Jones in the parish church at Llanfihangil
Aberythych - could this be yours?
Anne
Hello Althea,
I had a chance to look at the transcripts today I found the marriage of
William Jones and Susannah Owen on 1st April 1804 I may have located a
marriage of Sussannah to David Thomas in 1828 the writing is so faded that I
may be seeing what I want to see. If this is the correct entry David was not
from Llandebie he was from another parish but I cannot read it. I think the
marriage was in February again so faint that I could hardly see anything.
There is a marriage for Rachel Jones to William Mathews on 30th May 1831.
