Youre index found my GG grandmother Rachel James Williams widow and her
children in 1850. Just discovered that she came to U.S. in her 70s and died and
is buried inWilkes Barre Pa. New revealation is that she remarried after
Williams death to a Wm. Theophilus and had one son by this union, a Timothy
Theophilus, a tunnel contractor. Obit states that she lived in the same house in
Pentwyn for over 55 years. She was also listed as having 9 chn by William but I
can identify only five living as of 1850. Judging by her tenure in home in
Wales, she must have lived there with Wm.Theophilus before he predeceased her and
she came to states to spend remaining years with daughter Mary Williams
Evans(mrs.DanielW. Evans) as a footnote, Rachels son Morgan B.Williams became a
U.S. Senator from Pa. Would be most appreciative of any info on the Thophilus
family.. Thanks ..Bill
Hi Jessie

In case you get no response from a Carmarthenshire source, here's an off-the-wall thought:
Could your family rumour have got a little confused with CAERNARVONSHIRE? That county is a lot nearer Liverpool; most of the people who left Carmarthenshire would have migrated not to Liverpool but to the industrial valleys of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire, or to cities like Bristol and London. Also, at least within my Welsh connections, Hughes is more common name in North Wales than South Wales. Of course it would help if he had survived till the 1851 Census...
Good hunting

Hi All
Does anyone have an EDWARD JENKINS lurking in their family that was born sometime between 1775 and 1785.
He got married In Liverpool on 11 November 1807 to a Pheobe Porter.
Family rumours have it that he was born in Carmarthenshire. the 1841 census said he was not born in Lancashire
I'm not sure if there is any significance to it but their children names were Alice, John, Edward, Thomas, Pheobe and David and a grandson had HUGHES as a middle name
thanks

Hi Philip
I am interested in owners of ships in Carmarthen before 1820, especially if
their name was Stonehewer. My Stonehewers were in Carmarthen between about
1750 and 1820, I think that before that they came from Castlemartin, but am
unsure.
I believe there was one called Industry and one called Gratitude (I think
that the name of this ship was changed during the early 1800's to something
else). At the moment those are the only names I am aware of. However, I
can't find many of my Stonehewer family in Wales after 1820 only female
lines. I believe that I have found some references to at least one of them
in Bengal and maybe another in London, Southwark but haven't been able to
prove those yet.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi All
I had a minor breakthrough with my Stonehewer's the other day, and thought I
would share
I looked up the Will of John Davies (husband of Mary Stonehewer) at the
bottom of this Will is written as best as I can make out
" On the 10th day of July 1840 admon with the will aforesaid of the goods
and chattels and ... of John Davies late of the Boars Head Inn in the Parish
of St Peter in the Borough of the County of Carmarthen .......was granted to
John Stonehewer ...... will written John Davis the son of the said deceased
and the surviving universal signatee substituted in the said Will having
been first sworn duly to administer. Mary Davis the wife of the testator and
the sole executrix and universal legatee for life named in the said Will
died in his lifetime."
Having searched on the IGI I eventually came up with this -
Parents:
Father: JOHN DAVIES Family
Mother: MARY DAVIES
JOHN STONEHEWER JOHN
Christening: 01 MAR 1810 St Peters, Carmarthen, Carmarthen, Wales
John Davies and Mary Stonehewer had married in 1806. (Unfortunately, my John
Stonehewer was born ca 1792.) I haven't been able to find out what happened
to this John Stonehewer at all. Does anybody have any ideas as to why he was
baptised and lived with the name John Stonehewer as opposed to John Davies
or John?
Regards
Debbie Jackson
PS There are quite a few Wills on the PRO site for Wales - well worth
checking out!
HI Debbie
Have you viewed the indexes on our web pages for Carmarthen town St
Peters.....these are pre 1800 but I have more burials (think I have given
them to you) upto the end of St Peters burial registers.....have yet to go
back to the baptisms...
When you have information from the IGI it is always worth viewing or having
the information from the actual register.....the CRO will do a quick look up
for you if you give them the actual information.....

Hi Jessie
I was looking in the wrong volume....this volume has baptisms between
1765/1799....
I looked in 1765 but he was not listed for that year.....a rather large gap
for a baptism 21 years?
Do you have any other information on this person?

My family and I are planning a trip to Wales next June. We are
interested in hiring a guide that specilizes in genealogy to take us
around to the places where our ancestors were from.
Does anyone know of a company or a single person who does that? I've
already contacted British Ancestral Tours but they are having trouble
with the travel agency that they work with and aren't taking on new
business right now.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Remember the 'China Fleet Club' well, loved Hong Kong, Kowloon, Macow [if
that is the right spelling], especially 'Aberdeen' village as it was known
then, I have never seen any seafood dishes as good as I found there.
Wan-Chai was incredible, Bottle of beer 1 Hong Kong Dollar, about 1 &
3pence, maybe 6 or 7 pence today?!???

Hello All,
I had a query from an Ebbw Vale man regarding a family of Skym who came
from Llanelli in the 1800's. Peter Skym came to Beaufort, Monmouthshire
with his wife Margaret Harries sometime after 1821. Margaret Harries was
from Breconshire, St John according to Census.
Peter Skym had died by 1841 and in 1851 his wife is shown as 'proprietor
of Houses'. Margaret lived in 'Skym Row' and after she died in 1855 the
family in Skym Row as well.
Has anyone any interest of the Skym family name please

I have seen the same thing in my Joseph line. The middle 'H' also
represents Henry, the father, and seems to have been added in adulthood.
The tradition was carried down at least two generations in one line. In
addition, there was a change of the middle letter in one case. The father
was Henry Joseph, the son was David H. Joseph. David's son was also David
H. Joseph in early records, then later records indicated David D. Joseph! A
grandson of the first David H. Joseph was also David H. Joseph, but I have
never seen evidence that any of these children originally had or used a
middle name.

I have something similar in my family where the letter H is used as a middle
initial. Not appearring in the birth certificate. The closest I can find to
and explanation is that my G.Grandfather David DAVIES called himself David H
DAVIES for business purposes. The H was said to stand for Harries but none
of the family were really sure..
He had a grocers shop. He was apprentice to another D H DAVIES who was
possibly an uncle/ cousin. Although my GGrandfather progressed to a shop of
his own he seems to be using the middle initial to make a statement about
the continuity of family tradition in the business rather than just because
he liked the sound of it.
My father is also a David H DAVIES born in the same shop. His H is for
Henry which was also his mother's maiden name.
So it seems that the middle initial H is a sort of family tradition and it
doesn't seem to matter what the H represents if anything at all.
