Hello Yvonne
Maybe your Griffiths family links to my Vaughan/s?
Philip Vaughan married Elizabeth Griffiths on 9.5.1793 at St Peter's, Carmarthen, and had family. I would like to know more about the parents of both of them.
Thanks for any help.

Hi Su
In a Story of Carmarthen, public houses are listed, from the beginning to
the present day - these are the ones listed in The Quay
Hope and Anchor - later called the Jubilee; Ship Aground; Sloop; Jolly Tar -
now the Boat Club, Waterloo - adjacent to Waterlood Steps; Three Mariners.
I am unsure what public houses are recorded in CRO.....I know that in the
index card section, there are not many listed. If they were a public house
owned by Buckley's, there are records in CRO.....it's a matter of looking
through the information.
Carmathen being so large, and not indexed it's a matter of going through the
census to locate them in earlier or later census.....

Hello Listers,
I have obtained reference to an ancestor (Decimus Thomas) coming from
Ffynnonhenri to Llanarthney in 1751 to become a blacksmith. Apparently the
distance is around 16 miles but I cannot find it on my maps. Could anyone
give me some ideas as to where Ffynnonhenri is please, possibly even the
grid reference?
Many thanks in anticipation.

Hi,
Is anyone able to help please. My g.g.grandfather George Griffiths
was a Licensed Victular, in the 1881 census he is living at 19 Quay,
Carmarthen with his wife Eliza and family. Does anyone know if there
is a list of Licensed Vitulars for the area and also if anyone has
the 1891 census or an earlier one where they could do a look-up of
my family for me, I would be very greatful. By 1901 George had died
and Eliza and 3 of her children were living in Canton, Cardiff.
Many thanks, Su

Looking at the I.G.I, I found a marriage for Thomas Mortimer (born circ 1801)
married Elizabeth John 1826 Saint Davids Pembroke Wales, this would work very
nicely for.
Ann Mortimer born 1826 and Elizabeth Mortimer born 1836, both born Pembroke.
Could I please ask for a look up for St. Davids if there are any available
records please.
Thank you Sylvia
I wonder if there is a trade directory for circ1800 for CGN which I presume
is Cardigan.
Henry John Evans married 1857 age 31, his father Thomas Evans a Tailor, quite

If anyone is missing a David Davies in the 1841 Census I have the following:
Tynewydd, Llangadock. David Davies, 20, carpenter. As no place of birth is
given I assume born in county.
He is at the end of the family of John Rees, carpenter. John Rees' daughter
Elizabeth, my great-grandmother married a John Davies, whose father was David
Davies but this isn't the same person.
I hope that someone can claim this David Davies.

Hi Ron,
It's been quite the adventure today, getting to the Ceredigion archives and National Library in Aberystwyth after a night of torrential rainfall. The rain that had collected on the mountains was creating flash floods on the roads this morning. I hit the first one just 6 miles north of my home town and had to make a westerly detour. Everything went great until a few miles south of Aberystwyth on the coast road where we hit a traffic tailback stretching for miles due to an horrific traffic accident. Eventually got into Aberystwyth after nearly 3 hours on the road and its only about 50 miles from my home. Quite different to road conditions that I encountered when I worked in Minnesota.
However, back to the Tamerlane and your ancestors.
I'd requested, last night over the Internet, the NLW's holding of "Sailings from Aberystwyth 1842-1851 (Borough Records F11a)". These were awaiting me on my arrival.
Unfortunately....... no passenger lists!!! but a description of the weather, tide, cargo, etc on the 31st May 1847, when she departed for Quebec. I couldn't get a photocopy of this because the ledger was so huge, it wouldn't have been possible. An alternative was paying 5 pounds for a digital photo taken by the NLW which would have taken a week or so to process. So, I made a transcription of the entry which was as follows....
Description of Ship........ Barque.
Name................ TAMERLANE
Master's Name......... Robert James.
Port............... Aberystwyth.
Bound To............... Quebec.
Cargo.............. Passengers.
Burthen............. 700 TONS.
Date of Sailing......... 31 May 1847.
Tide's Height............ 15' 6"
Time of Tide.......... 8-0
Wind & Weather....... NW (Calm, Fine, Hot) Draught of Water 13' 3"
And that's it....... no passenger list.
I enquired if there were any passenger list available and I was told by the librarian that they don't have any. He suggested that the only place there might be a chance of one is at Greenwich, London, Maritime Museum. He wasn't too hopeful about that though.
I then tried the Ceredigion archives for the AT/SHIP/3 May 1840-April 1853 holding. This again had no passenger list and the archivist told me that it wasn't the norm to have passenger lists from that period of time for people leaving the country because they were emigrating to another country. It would be the responsibility of the country that they were emigrating to, to keep records of anyone entering rather than that of the country that they were leaving. As far as the authorities here were concerned, emigrants were off their hands once they left these shores.
Things haven't changed much, have they?
Here again the ledger was so huge that it had to be cradled and they didn't make photocopies. However, they did allow people making their own digital shots of the documents. This I've done and I'll e-mail them directly to you tomorrow. Its quite fascinating, with a description of how she met her end in the Bay of Biscay and what happened to the crew. All in beautiful copper plate hand writing. I'll leave that for you to enjoy transcribing because that is all part of the enjoyment of reading old documents.
Sorry that I couldn't have been of more help.
regards
Mal Davies................ from a drying out, (hopefully), Ammanford, Carmarthenshire.
P.S. my partner Ellyn, who is Canadian, believes that immigration records started in 1865 for Quebec.

Hi Mal
I read your message tonight and am agog. Did you really travel to
Aberystwyth - 50 miles over three hours - just to check in at the National
Library of Wales and the Ceredigion archives just to try and find a
passenger list for the Tamerlane? And this after a night of torrential
rain. I am totally and utterly speechless and simply don't know how to
thank you.
While I sure regret learning that no passenger list likely exits, at least
in Wales, I'm none the less appreciative of all your efforts...and am
enjoying the newfound knowledge about this `Bark or Barque'. I'll not call
her a Brig any more despite what I find. I much appreciate receiving the
details you have provided re when the Tamerlane sailed: `with' or `without'
my GGrandfather.
I guess I'm not surprised by the attitude re emigrants: they're now the
responsibility of the far flung land to which they have emigrated. After
all, they were off the local tax rolls. While it's a terrible pity that
those early passenger lists were not retained, I can't say that I'm
surprised. After all, Canada wasn't even a Dominion until 1867, two years
after it became mandatory to retain such lists. Prior to then, the country
simply wasn't yet sufficiently organised and port authorities were too busy
trying to process the newcomers, get the healthy on their way, tend to the
ill and bury the dead. It's unreal how many new immigrants died from the
epidemics of the time.
I'll look forward to viewing your digital photos of the demise of the
Tamerlane. And I do sense that you enjoyed your visits and the data gleaned.
Your Ellyn, as you will have seen above, was `on the money' about 1865
being the beginning of compulsory saving of passenger lists. Perhaps when
you send along the attachments privately, you will tell me more of your
time in Minnesota - Minneapolis I guess - and from where Ellyn hails.
Again Mal, I really don't know how to thank you for your efforts. A simple
Thank You seems so little.

Hi Pauline,
I'm not sure if my messages have got through recently as my daft ginger cat
has been knocking things off the computer table like the speaker which
landed on the plug and turned the computer off or I've been so tired that
any messages haven't made sense.
So firstly profuse apologies for not replying immediately I've been
involved in 3 large outdoor concerts and haven't had time for anything else.
I've now had time to recover.
David Davies
The info I have is from the 1881 census when the family lived in Penderi;
the 1871 census when the family with the first wife , Mary living in Incline
Houses and the 1861 census when they were living at Cwmfelin.
I have tried Swansea and Llanelli for the first marriage but with no
success; as well as the second marriage.
The children of the first marriage were:
Jane Davies 1850
Daniel 1851
Mary 1853
Hannah 1855
Martha 1859
David 1861
John 1864
I've tried to get Jane's birth certificate but they couldn't trace it. I
realise now that I need to try both Llanelli and Swansea for all of the
children and see if I strike lucky and discover Mary's surname to be able to
find the marriage details.
I've also checked the GRO index and couldn't find a marriage for David
Davies's second marriage to Elizabeth Rogers nee Williams - but to no
avail, again Swansea couldn't help - I think the marriage took place between
1871 (although the first wife was alive on the census) and the birth of
Susan Davies in 1874.
Can the records be consulted in the registry office?
I think the details could be at Swansea and didn't know if they would allow
people to visit the office to search.
Can you suggest any other avenues I could try?
Denise Melhuish
PS I'll be away from the computer for a couple of weeks so won't be
answering!
