Hiya
I'd go along with all that and if time permitted perhaps a trip to
Pendine Sands
To Furnace Pond
And a walk round the reservoirs
And a drive up to Pembrey mountain - just for the stunning views.
If walking round the present day centre of Llanelli, the trick is to
look UP - a lot of the old buildings are still there but masked by shop
front - Stepney Street, with the renovated Lucania Buildings, Old
Llanelly Cinema, YMCA, the Halifax Building, Exchange Buildings, are all
"old llanelly".
Vaughan Street has the Barclays Bank Building, corner of Llanelly House,
the library building.
Church Street has the old church and town hall and the church!
If heading out of Llanelli towards Swansea on the new road, a little way
along on the left hand side is one of the old stack chimneys still
visible - not sure which works this was, but it's old.
Obviously all over town there are some stunning example of the superb
architecture of the non-conformist chapels
And there are some Georgian House at the top of Goring Road, by the
Thomas Arms built 1832, a few yards up Old Road is the Old Vicarage,
which is now a listed building, in front of the Thomas Arms was the site
of the old horse fair and the streets on the right like Prospect Place
and Gilbert Place are two of the oldest streets in the town. Bottom of
Thomas St with Falcon Buildings and Buckleys Brewery and the River
Lliedi.
There is quite a lot of old Llanelly still, but you have to look quite
hard and shutter out modern Llanelli.
A trip to Parc Howard would be quite high on my list. There are some
good examples of the old Llanelly pottery there.

Hi Maureen
If your in-laws are visiting Llanelli to see where their roots are, the
place has changed quite a bit over the past few years.
If he was the Lighthouse Keeper (as was my William Thomas until 1913)
they would have to take a photograph of this.....it must have been The
Whitford Lighthouse, the keepers used to spend two weeks on this and two
weeks on the one at the end of the pier.......This was the first cast
iron lighthouse, and is still standing today in the Burry
Estuary......this can be seen better from Burry Port...(also picture on
our web site)....
Llanelli beach is a must to visit (better when the tide is in), this now
has a beautiful cycle path/walk-way as far as Pembrey. The dock has been
altered and is now used for canoeing etc......(not that I have seen them
there).....also Sandy Water Park which is the old site of the
Steelworks......this is only a stones throw away from the Seaside area
of Llanelli.
Also as Anne has stated, Pembrey Country Park, plus Burry Port Harbour,
which has again been renovated and is a pleasure to walk along.
Apparently from this week there is going to be a Hopper Train from
Llanelli beach to Burry Port Harbour.......so if they wish to view the
coastline and scenery it would be ideal to use this new mode of
transport.....
Hope they enjoy their stay, let us know what they thought of the
place......

Does anyone know where the Sardis Chapels might have been located in Pembrokeshire. I have found one in Burton and one at St Issels. Was there one at Rosemarket or anywhere else in Pembrokeshire.

Hello Pauline,
I e-mailed the registrars office in Carmarthen to ask if there was a
marriage record for Thomas Chappell and Sarah Morgans in Llanelli circa
1855-1860 and they sent me the reference number Register 7, entry 91 so that
I could send for the certificate, as I need Sarah's fathers name, and the
witnesses names in case they are relavent. If you can help, I know you will.
There is no rush.
Thank you,
Mary

Hello Pauline/ fellow listers
Mal Davies has been doing some sleuthing on my behalf on William Philipps (1772-1844) timber merchant, major of Carmarthen and High Sheriff.
He has found the following entry in the index of the Carmarthenshire Antiquary:
Philipps, William, merchant, of Carmarthen XXII 50
Do you have volume XXII and if so would you mind looking up page 50 to see if there is anything of interest?
I would be very grateful
Regards
Anne
I have noticed a lot of questions regarding certificates, some time ago i saw
this on a list and have used it with a great deal of success, they are
reasonable, ( at least i think so), fast and accurate.
They take credit cards, i use master card. there is also the option of the
length of each search and the price for each one.
If there is doubt they will contact you before they go ahead.
Besides certificates they do some cencus, wills, and some other i can't
remember at this time
I highly recomend them. Sylvia

Re Anne Owen Taylor's message, and replies.
I am descended from the Phillips family who attended the Henllan Chapel, and
lived in the surrounding parishes. You might find a lead from my
information.
My James ancestor was William James, who married Martha Palmer (Bapt Henllan
Chapel 13.10.1788) at Llangan church 23.07.1816. Martha's parents were
Henry Palmer and MARY PHILLIPS. Mary was baptised at Henllan 22.02.1762,
and buried there on 01.11.1812. She married Henry on 29.11.1783. Mary's
father was JOHN PHILLIPS who was buried, possibly at Henllan, on 05.02.1819.
Henry Palmer's grandfather was also Henry Palmer (1679-1742), and has half a
column in the Welsh National Dictionary of Biography. He was the Pastor at
Henllan Chapel from 1721 until 1742, and his Congregationalist principles
were founded in his Calvinism.
If there is a link here between our families, please let me know.

Dear Listers,
Looking for info on James Collins of Union Square, Llanelly, stepfather
of Abigail Lahane who passed away there at the age of 15 in 1876.
Abigail Lahane was the daughter of Michael Lahane (Lighthouse Keeper)
deceased.
Also on a different note my mother and father-in-law Ford and Mary Thoms
are presently visting England and Wales for the next three weeks. Some
of you may remember Ford's stories of Christmas past in Newfoundland. I
posted them to the list a while back. I am wondering right now if anyone
could suggest any *must see* attractions in the Llanelli and Burry Port
area.
Thank you

Hi Pauline
Yes! this is wonderful that I am being helped like this! I believe Cwmgwili
is north of Carmarthen, perhaps in Newchurch parish, I think this may be in
Abergwili. I was mistaken about the wife of Grismond - Hannah Phillips of
Plasparceau appears in my bible, the next entry to Grismond's death, but I do
not think they were husband and wife. (Plasparceau is a farm near Cwmgwili).
Thanks Margaret

Christened on 1st Mar 1854 with a John and Elizabeth Davies as his parents.
Does this ring any bells with you.

Hi Pauline
Grismond Phillips daughter was Sarah Phillips (my great great grandmother). I
got this info from the family bible, and her marriage certificate. I was
mistaken in thinking his wife was called Hannah, the bible is referring to
another Phillips, not related to him.
Thanks Margaret
Hi Mal
thanks for your information. I have a copy of Francis Jones' book, TReasury
of Historic Carmarthenshire, but I cannot find the right Grismond Phillips in
it. I have my great great grandmothers marriage certificate to John Jones,
March 12th 1867, and her father is Grismond Phillips (2xll's) of Tir Gwili.
In the family bible she has written in the deaths page - Capt Grismond
Phillips Cwmgwily died September 11th 1887. No birth date is recorded. She
and her husband John lived for some time at Park Y Berllan farm on the
Cwmgwili estate. She was born January 1st 1851. I would be grateful if you
would send your information to me at my e-mail address. Many thanks
Margaret Burrows
No it's OK - as long as I know where to go looking!
