Sorry to say that Herbert PHILLIPS who married Elizabeth Jones at Llanelly on 22 December 1889 wasn't the one I was looking for .... this one is an iron moulder age 26yrs!
Both Carmarthen and Llanelli Register Offices were fantastic! (and very sympathetic)
Many thanks, especially to Pauline, for all help.
A very merry Christmas to all on this List and happy hunting in 2004.
Regards
Gilly
I would like to add my thanks to everyone on the list for their help this
past year. I have enjoyed the comments and input from the participants. I
feel a close tie to Wales and I thank you all for that.
A special thanks to Pauline and Richard, who with their patience,
dedication, and commitment has made being a member of the Carmarthenshire
Family History Society and this List very rewarding.
May you all have a wonderful holiday season. Here's to a 2004 filled with
answers to all our family history quests. From Cherlyn, Kansas City,
Missouri USA.

Hi Darla
I can check Abergwilli parish church indexes, but there is no James Evans
baptised c1827 only one in 1853 to Henry and Sarah....
I have not indexed St Peters after 1800 for baptisms yet, but will be doing
so in the New year...

I'm trying to help a friend here in the US answer a family history question.
Would someone be kind enough to check St. Peter's Carmarthen records for the
birth/christening of a Thomas Evans in 1827, father David Evans? She's also
looking for the birth/christening record of James Evans in 1828 in Abergwilli
(spelling?), father also David. She's trying to discover whether these two men
were brothers.
Thanks!
Darla
Dear All,
Just a quick note to thank you all for the enjoyment your messages have given me throughout the past year and to specifically thank those of you who have contributed to my own research.

To all listers
A merry Christmas and a very happy New Year.
I have so enjoyed reading all your messages. Have not as yet entered the
fray. Once I've sorted out all my queries, I'll be asking for your help.
A big thank-you to Pauline and Richard for all their sterling work. They
bring a personal touch to everything.
Best wishes Mary Greatorex
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to Pauline and Richard and all other
listers! Many thanks for all the assistance you've provided this year!

76F in Houston today - not very Christmasy!
Hello Pat,
This is Anne in Canada I know that you have been working on some names in
Llannon and I think that they were Evans's just wanted you to know that I
have the Bishops transcripts on hand ( jusy down the road anyway) if you
need something looked up - there are unfortunately gaps of some years - and
they would be the years that I would like to search!!! However if I can help
you I would be happy to.
Again thanks for your help in the past
Merry Christmas
Anne
Hi Pauline
I'm very confused by this List ... originally, I thought you were a member
giving individual help, but my replies appear on-site. Not that I don't
thank you for all advice and experience has shown that each List operates
differently.
Anyway - have done as advised below and waiting reply.
How much I wish that other sites had direct contacts similar. Your
enthusiasm made me look again at 1837online to view their charges - £11!
But I'm now trying to get my gmother's actual birth certificate (India) as
I'd relied on info from India-L members before .... just in case there's
something else on it that they missed.
Although I can't reciprocate help direct to you, I try to do my bit here in
Notts and have done some stuff for members around
graveyards/libraries/streets and giving local historical info ... so want
you to know that your help is returned to other researchers - according to
their needs.
Many thanks again
Gilly

HI Gilly
Pre purchasing the marriage certificate try the record office to see if they
have the marriage in Llanelli parish church (St Elli), or perhaps St Pauls
parish church which was the chapel of ease......you may be lucky and the
marriage that the Registry office has took place in the parish
church.....its worth a try anyway.
The record office is open until Tuesday or is it Wednesday? you could send
them an email and ask if they have the marriage, give the details given by
the registry office (dates not their reference number).....if they do have
the marriage it will be cheaper to purchase only £1 for the certificate and
£1.50 for the postage......
their email is
Archives(a)carmarthenshire.gov.uk
they are very helpful, and doubt very much if many people will be there next
week.....
Very interesting story, I love it when they are much more
interesting.....liked the bit when you stated 'probably died of
exhaustion'!!!!!
keep us posted......Pauline

Hi again Pauline,
Thank you for interest. Herbert was quite a character, starting as a coal
miner in Ilkeston where he was born about 1845, parents John and Mary. He
worked his way up to mining manager/engineer in local coal mines and going
onto managing a gold mine in India and Inspector of gold mines in South
Africa.
He married and moved to Eastwood, Notts;had 6 children and was widowed Dec
1885.
I knew none of above when I started as we'd always been told my gmother was
his only child and that her mother died in SA about 1900 with Herbert dying
soon after of a broken heart! She said she had lived with aunts and
cousins.
I got my gmother's, Annie Bertha Josephine, birthdate (Oct 1889) and baptism
(April 1890) from India with Annie Elizabeth shown as mother. ABJ was
certainly back in Eastwood, living with Herbert's daughter from 1st wife in
1901, age 11. There's no sign of Herbert and 2 of his sons in 1901 so
assume they are out in Africa sorting property and finances .... as far from
dying of a broken heart he remarried in 1903, dying in 1904 (presumably from
exhaustion :-)) He's buried at Eastwood - something else we were never
told, even though my gmother still lived there after she married!
As you can see its an interesting story and the info on his 1st/3rd wives
was fairly easy to find ... once I accepted the truth of the matter! Annie
Elizabeth is proving elusive and I'm wondering whether he actually married
her ... or perhaps she was pregnant first! Certainly my gmother claimed to
have been born August 1890 rather than above date so I'm thinking that there
might have been a quick marriage and then they went off to India ....
If the Wales link proves wrong I might have to try India again ... many
thanks anyway and sorry this is so long. Its such a quandary and it helps
sort my ideas out to write it out ... any other ideas are welcome!
Regards
Gilly

Pauline kindly gave me link to Registrars(a)carmarthenshire.gov.uk and I
received reply same day that "have found the marriage between Herbert
Phillips and Elizabeth Jones on the 22/12/1889, if you would like a copy of
this entry please quote referernce 6/1PC 183."
It may not link in but its another option to try (I found Herbert and Annie
Elizabeth PHILLIPS' daughter born 18 Oct 1889 and baptized in India April
1890 ... she had said her birthdate was 18 Aug 1890!)
Its good enough for me to get the certificate (£7) just in case as there is
already a lot of fiction in our family! And what an excellent service.
Many thanks - will let you know if contents agree with facts I know are true
about dear Herbert!

Gilly

I'm new to this list, though familiar with others, and need some advice about my search here, please.
On 1837online I found a marriage in Llanelly for a Herbert Phillips Oct/Nov/Dec 1889, 11a page 1487 (or 1497) - though not listed at freeBMD or familysearch.
Could some kind soul advise on who I should approach to check the marriage ... am hoping its to Annie Elizabeth!
Many Thanks

I was able to put people together via the Cornwall Rootsweb board. I made an
enquiry on behalf of a family friend. The administrator on the board
reported that someone else had been enquiring about a certain individual and it
appears that they were related to the person I was trying to help and they were
able to exchange information and have kept in touch. I have found the
contributors to these boards both helpful and friendly and the help they give
invaluable.
Anna
It is a long way from snowy cold Colorado to wet green Carmarthenshire but the season is the same and I wish Pauline and Richard a very merry holiday and a successful new year. Also to all the listers who entertain my morning for a few moments with their requests, occasional complaints, interesting bits of information and complex family genealogies I say keep it coming; it is a lot more interesting than the spam I am deluged with these days.
Dave Davies

As we close out 2003, I realize how much I have learned about genealogy in the past 4 years....and how many more times that I have yet to learn! I have made an absolutely WONDERFUL friend this year who was connected to me about a certain branch of my family through a gentleman unknown to me. We were part of the same surname list and he remembered seeing, at least 18 months ago, e-mails she and I had posted to the list. He contacted her, then me and put us together. She has been an incredible blessing to me. My husband now says he thinks that she and I are related! But it's the bonding that takes place when someone previously unknown to you...a total stranger in fact...becomes a friend simply because we're all essentially searching for the same things. I have "met" two other such ladies who have also offered their help to me in incredible ways of time, effort and travel over the past two years and for that I thank Michelle and Nina as well. And I think it goes withou!
t saying how the Carms FHS "bunch" feels about Pauline and Richard. They are continually amazing to me!
This poem was forwarded to me this morning from another List to which I belong and I wanted to share it with you. Doesn't matter where your ancestors came from, or how much they are trying to "hide", this will ring true with all of us. And I'm reminded of a quaint line from Dickens: "God Bless Us One and All"!!
Census Taker
It was the first day of census, and all through the land;
The pollster was ready ... a black book in hand.
He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride;
His book and some quills were tucked close by his side.
A long winding ride down a road barely there;
Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting up through the air.
The woman was tired, with lines on her face;
And wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place.
She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table;
And she answered his questions ... the best she was able.
He asked of her children ... Yes, she had quite a few;
The oldest was twenty, the youngest not quite two.
She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red;
his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed.
She noted each person who lived there with pride;
And she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside.
He noted the sex, the colour, the age ..
The marks from the quill soon filled up the page.
At the number of children, she nodded her head;
And saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead.
The places of birth she "never forgot";
Was it Kansas? or Utah? Or Oregon ... or not?
They came from Scotland, of that she was clear;
But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here.
They spoke of employment, of schooling and such;
They could read some and write some ... though really not much.
When the questions were answered, his job there was done;
So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun.
We can imagine his voice loud and clear;
"May God Bless you all for another ten years."
Now picture a time warp ... it's now you and me;
As we search for the people on our family tree.
We squint at the census and scroll down so slow;
As we search for that entry from long, long ago.
Could they only imagine on that long ago day;
That the entries they made would effect us this way?
If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel;
And the searching that makes them so increasingly real.
We can hear if we listen the words they impart;
Through their blood in our veins and their voices in our heart.
