Hello There,
A friend of mine has translated the words as follows:
MI A YMDRECHAIS - I ENDEAVOURED
YMDRECH DEG - A FAIR EFFORT
MI A ORPHENAIS FY NGYRFA - I ENDED MY RACE, COURSE ,OR CAREER (COULD BE
ANY ONE OF THE THREE)
MI A GEDWAIS Y FYDD - I KEPT THE FAITH
It is a typical epitaph and is in written and not spoken Welsh as it does
not flow in the vernacular sense. He also believes it not to be original,
i.e. specially written as an epitaph, but rather was taken from the works of
a bard, preacher or other such person. However, he may be wrong about that.
Hope to have been of some help.
Regards,
John Lewis.

Hello John
Thank you, I do appreciate the translation and explanation. It is written in
Welsh though, I was curious about it. I wonder where it came from, I guess
that will be my next adventure. Thank you for taking the time to do that for
me, thank your friend as well.
Have a great day, mine is just starting, need my java!!

Hi Pauline,
Thank you for telling me about the databases, I had not looked there.
The George & Elizabeth Jones I also found there too.
I was hoping she would have been Evans, to link up with my Amy Evans born Meidrim. It said his name on Amy's marriage record, I wondered if he was stepfather., could be witness of course. Amy married 1823.
There is definately a connection there though, as she [Elizabeth Jones] is on the 1851 census of Llanegwad you found for me, visiting Tirbach farm & her daughter Eleanor Williams. On the original, Pat Powell kindly told me , that mother-in-law was crossed out & visitor was inserted.
The son mentioned there, John, is on the 1871 census of Glam. staying with my 2x Great-Grandma Catherine Lewis[Amy Evans daughter]as nephew.
Curiouser & curiouser!!!!
I need to find Amy Evans baptism to find her parents, she was born Meidrim in a house called Pantglas, approx 1794.
This is a farm , managed to get up to Carmarthen last summer & took a photo of the now derilict cottage.
Richard did check Meidrim baptisms for me ,but no luck, any ideas where I may try now?

Hello Pauline,
Thank you. Yes, this is the same family, but my particular interest is in
Rachel's sister, Anna. Both girls were single in 1841 but married by 1851.
However, I do know that Rachel died 17.10.1870, aged 62 and is buried in
Bethel Methodist Chapel Graveyard, Llansawel. So is David, her husband, who
died on 26.2.1873, aged 63. Any more help you can give me would be greatly
appreciated.
Regards,
John.
P.s. I have no info' on the 19 years old Rachel.

Well I've started something here! It certainly looks in far better order
than when I first visited it about 10-11 years ago - and when (I think
Dyfed FHS were working to get it tidies up and catalogue it). This is
also a good time of year to visit as you're in no danger of being
bombarded with fir cones from the trees, by the squirrels!

Hi Janie
Yes, there are a lot of 'Important' people buried here, that is why it
is so disgusting that this graveyard is allowed to fall into such
dis-repair......even the Stepney's grand monument was covered at one
time......only the people who tended to graves on the pathway could
access their graves....
Pauline
Hi Joe
Just a little more Info on 'Old Road Cemetery' and the reason for it being
called 'Mynwent y Crach'.
1. It was the burial Ground for The Parish Church 'Church of England', and
belonged to the Parish Church.
2. Before Several of the Larger Non-Conformist Chapels of the town bought
their own cemetery in 1850 'Box Cemetery'. The only burial ground in
Llanelly was 'Old Road', so when a funeral from a Non-Conformist Chapel took
place, the Chapel Minister/Priest/etc, and the congregation would follow the
procession from the Chapel as far as the 'Old Road Cemetery' Gates, where
the Vicar of the Parish Church would take over the service, the Officiating
Minister was not allowed to carry out the remainder of the service in the
Cemetery.
Perhaps this may give you all an insight into why, probably 2/3rd's of the
Welsh speaking population were non-conformist, and why we all have problems
finding our ancestors.

From my dim and distant knowledge of history I thought the Celtic
languages and tribes originated from "central/eastern" Europe - approx
area of Hungary/Romania today.... And brought the language with them -
of course the English ended up with a real hotch potch of language -
celtic, germanic, roman and scandanavian... You'll find that Breton has
a lot in common with Welsh, Irish Gaelic has a lot of similarities. Most
Manx speakers can understand Welsh easily - and Cornish etc -
..anyone of my age grew up with feet, inches, pints, gallons and Pounds,
shillings etc - don't understand metric at all.
..and of course a litre in America would be a liter!
What was it Montgomery said about two countries divided by a common
language!

Jos,
You've really lost me now; using furlongs; are you into horse racing!
Well any way a gallon with you guys is a lot less than a gallon here;
ours is about 20% greater..I rest my case. A litre is a litre wherever
you are in the world. Nope I'm all for metrification it's so much
simpler..."rods, poles, perches to you!" French they're distant cousins
of the Welsh: "Lloegr" the welsh for England shares the same etymology
as the French "Loire" ... England a region of France or maybe that is
where the Celtic tribes who inhabited it came from? A conundrum that
will take time to solve. Don't think too ill of the metric system.

AHA! You see, Rhodri, even by your calculations Lancaster is farther
from Mountian Top in kilometers than it is in miles by a factor of 75.
Another factor omitted from your calculation is that from Lancaster to
Mountain Top, is UPHILL all the way and we all know distances are much
greater when one travels uphill. About 25 years ago some dullard thought
that introducing the metric system here was a good idea, so road signs
near Washngton were posted in the Miles (which I think is derived from a
Celtic word) and Kilometers. The idea was as popular as "Whooping
Cough". The whole looney idea was abandoned and the implementer went
into hiding. Also remember that the Metric was invented by a Frenchman
and you know what the Frech think of us, so they won't let us use it.
:-( (). As to the young lady, Jane R., from Cape Cod, post the Welsh
inscriptions on the list and one of us students will have a whack at
translating them. And who knows someone who really knows Welsh may do it
as well. It's happened before.

Hi Janie
Old Road Cemetary known ad Mynwent y Crach (?) (cemetary of the rich) is the
overflow from the parish church, so everyone who is buried there will be
recorded in the burial registers for St Elli Llanelli parish church....so
much easier to find when they were of the parish church.....mine were all
non-conformists!!
My Hannah Lloyd who married Griffith Harvey at the time of her marriage in
1844 was from Capel newydd, which was the area around the Chapel...

That is a lot of people - although originally there were more houses
here than there are now - there are only six left. That does tell me
that the houses were built by 1850 but I'm still not sure of the exact
year.
I've never been across to Capel Newydd but I'm sure I could manage to
cross the road!
..I've seen the weather forecast - more rain and wind - so get out and

digital images of the old section of Box cemetary, which as you know
only allowed non-conformists at one stage to be buried here, as all the
Chapels got together to purchase the land......it is now owned by
Llanelli council...
Have you been into the burial ground across the road from you in Capel
Newydd.....??
Weather fine here in Llanelli today, as you say it makes a change from
all the rain we have had.....

Hi Gwynne
Welcome to Carms lists .....if you need info on any part of the county,
there are so many people on this list who live in different areas of Carms,
that they would be willing to help you.....
Let me know the names of the people who married pre 1837 and I will look in
my index for you......is the Powell/Jenkin marriage after this time....pre
1837 there are only 3 marriages of these two named....
The parish registers for Carmarthenshire are housed in the CRO (Carmarthen
record office).....their e-mail number is
Archives(a)carmarthenshire.gov.uk
they are not back in action until the 2nd January.....
Let me know if you want a marriage look-up, or any other assistance, help if
I can....
Pauline

Hi Janie
I looked in 1851 census index and there are 241 entries for Mount Pleasant
Llanelly, also a place of this name in Glyn hamlet......Rather a lot of
people don't you think!!
The burials for Llanelli we (Carmsfhs) have indexed from 1693 to
1847.......no other indexes are available for this burial ground....all
these entries are in the burial register for St Elli, I know of no
monumentals that have been done for this church.....Carmsfhs have digital
images of the old section of Box cemetary, which as you know only allowed
non-conformists at one stage to be buried here, as all the Chapels got
together to purchase the land......it is now owned by Llanelli council...
Have you been into the burial ground across the road from you in Capel
Newydd.....??
Weather fine here in Llanelli today, as you say it makes a change from all
the rain we have had.....

Actually the dates go back a little further than that, sorry! 1789 they were
the children of David Rogers and Hannah "Anna" Rogers. I have dates baptised
2-11-1789 a dau, 2-26-1792 a dau., a son David baptised 12-13-1809. one
record from a church says, Thomas son of David Roger, Smith, of Cynlleth, was
baptised on 10-1-1797. I'm assuming that David Rogers wife; Hannah "Anna"
Rogers died in wales 1797, David Rogers went to Prince Edward Island with his
son's and Dau. he died a few months after arriving. Some of this stuff still
doesn't make much sence to me, but of course everyone was named after
everyone, so you find the same name 5 x's but all different people. Is there
a web site I could go to, or someone I should write to regarding this far
back?
Well thank you for any in-put you can give me! I appreciate it!
Ann R.
Hi
I am trying to trace Letitia GEORGE born circa 1804 in Haverfordwest.
She married Noah GREEN in Bristol on 12 December 1824 and died in Bristol in 1882
Does anyone have her in their tree or can anyone give me any idea where she might have been baptised?
Many thanks
Michelle Rogers
