Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
In the context of the discussion of what happened to some tomb stones at a Welsh cemetery which apparently have been thrown away, I thought the readers would like to see the following, which is extracted from an article in the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader of 23 Dec. 2001.
On 26 February 1889, an explosion occurred at the at the Powell Squib Factory in Plymouth, Pa. just down from and on the opposite bank of the Susquehanna River from Wilkes-Barre, killing eleven girls and the foreman..
The girls who were killed were employed at rolling "squibs", which were made by rolling blasting powder in paper and sealing both ends of the tube they produced. Squibs, when ignited with a match, were used in the mines as fuses to ignite the blasting powder tamped into holes bored into the surface to be blasted.
The foreman at the factory, Mr.George Reese, who died shortly after the blast of burns he had received, explained what happened.
At 1:00 P. M. Katie Jones, 17, came to Mr. Reese with some defective squibs in her apron and as usual, she dumped them into the stove. Before the lid could be replaced, one of the defective squibs flew out of the stove like a small rocket and landed on a case of finished squibs. They exploded.
Ten of the eleven girls died in the blast and fire were:
Mary Walters, 16; Ruth Powell, 20; Esther Ann Powell, 22; Maggie Richards, 15; Gladys Reese, 14; Mary Lake, 16; Kate Jones, 17; Jane Thomas, 14; Hettie Jones, 16. They along with Mr. Jones, 44 were buried in a single grave in Plymouth's Shawnee Cemetery.
An eleventh victim, Maggie Lynch, 21 is buried elsewhere.
The plaque on the tall and ornate obelisk reads:
"Erected by sympathetic citizens to the memory of ten of the victims of the explosion that destroyed the Powell Squib Factory".
On the base of the monument is the following poem: Together they sleep on the sloping green,
where flowers bloom 'neath the sunlight beam,
where the soft breezes sigh through the willow tree,
that nods o'er the grave in the sunny Shawnee.
Shawnee cemetery had fallen into disrepair but a group of volunteers and community groups have worked to restore the cemetery. It is now under the care of Plymouth's Janice Williams. The cemetery's records are held by the Plymouth Historical Society.

Hi Pauline,
My family have just arrived from sunny Denmark WITH the
video which contains the piece about Amelia Earhart.I didn't want to make a
promise that I possibly couldn't keep but now I am obviously in a position
to tell you that I will get a copy of this done & get it to you in the
fairly near future.
Paul.

Hello Pauline,
When I say "easily view" I mean on the internet or
someone has transferred the info I just happen to be after onto disc & is
selling it i.e.,do you know of any ongoing or completed projects that
involve the transfer of the either the 1841, 61,71 or 91 census for
Llandyfeilog so that it may be viewed electronically.
regards,
Paul.

Hi Don and Bernard
It does seem to be where Bernard has stated according to my Wales AZ road
atlas- I'll find out exactly which parish when the archives reopens.
Christmas Day has been and gone, we had a wonderful quiet one, Sarah had a
new computer which occupied her for most of the day... . Going to see the
grandchildren today to see what Santa brought them.......
speak soon Pauline

Can someone please tell me where "Penybont, CMN" is located. I have 2
relatives that were born there according to the 1851 Census disk, in 1831,
1833. I'm trying to locate the parish to find baptism records for Thomas
and William Bowen.
The closest thing I can find on the map is Pen-y-banc.
Diolch,
Newydd Blwydd LLawen
Don Bowen
I would wish you a Merry Christmas but any reference to "merry" could be deemed to infer an altered state or imbibing of alcohol to produce merriment....any merriment in respect of drink is hereby denied and any future inference whether implied or implicit, may be actionable.
>From us (the wishor) to you (hereinafter called the wishee), please accept without obligation, implied or implicit, our best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, politically correct, low-stress, non-addictive, gender neutral, celebration of the winter solstice season, practised within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of you choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others.
Any references in this greeting to "the Lord", "father Christmas" or any other festive figure, whether actual or fictitious, dead or alive, shall not imply any endorsement by or from them in respect of this greeting, and all proprietary rights in any referenced third party names and images are hereby acknowledged.
Pat and Janet,
Once again my thanks to Darla, Diane, Brenda, Jos. , Janet, Jane and everyone
else ( mis-guided enough ? ) who has given me encouragement about the bits
extracted from my memories. Thank you Pauline and Richard for your work
throughout the year. My thanks also to Paul who made me trawl my memory banks
for signs of "Billy Whiz".
Have a brilliant politically (in)correct festive season and look after
yourselves and one another. Now for the bad news......... I shall still send
the odd query in to the list in the New Year.
Swollen-headed Trevor, (rushing to get ready for the
arrival of children and grandchildren before taking them off to the Pantomime
in Woking.)
BRAVO!! Good work, Trevor!! We (both of us) will miss your stories very
much - but will look forward to being able to procure copies of our own in
the near future.
Thanks! Thanks!
Darla
Bravo, Trevor, I've enjoyed your reminiscences. Best of luck to you with
the publishing.
Cheers,
Brenda

After starting school at the "Gram" in Carmarthen I continued to socialise
with my old school friends in Ferryside, but this became harder as the
requirements to submit homework at the new school on time got tougher. Puppy
love entered my life that autumn, but that was not something to admit freely
in the village. It must have been a fine autumn because I remember nights
when a harvest moon was full and golden. Every star in the sky could be seen
because, due to the absence of street-lighting, there was no glare from below
to dim the stars brilliance. There were also many shooting stars, so perhaps
this took place at the time of the annual shower of meteorites known as the
Perseids. I had "fallen" for a girl, newly arrived in the village who was
just slightly older than me. The attraction between the blonde Marilyn
Griffiths and me seemed to be mutual since, when playing "Kiss-chase" with
the gang and a few girls she always let me catch her and in "Truth, a dare,
must or promise" my forfeit was inevitably to have to meet up with her the
next evening. Aah, young love.... kisses sweeter than wine ( -gums ) !
The RAF station was closed down and the demobilised airmen with their
families travelled off on a succession of trains towards Paddington. My pal,
Tinker, disappeared for a few days that soon stretched into a couple of
weeks. One or two day's absence was not unusual around that time and Mum
suggested that he was probably after a bitch somewhere. A few weeks later we
got a letter from one of the airmen's wives who had stayed with us briefly
whilst trying to find more permanent lodgings. She wrote that she had seen
Tinker being dragged off the train in Glasgow on the end of a piece of rope
by one of the airmen. Mum presumed that this person had taken Tinker back to
Scotland with him as a present for his children or as a "souvenir" of his
time in Ferryside, giving no thought to the sense of loss and desolation that
might be engendered in his real owners. We had very little money and not much
chance of finding Tinker in a large conurbation like Glasgow, even if that
was his final destination. I was desperately upset that my companion of
nearly four and a half years had been stolen from me and yearned for
retribution. That was a vain hope. Tinker had gone from my life forever, but
he would always be remembered with great fondness for his friendship and
humour. Tears still come to my eyes at the wrenching feeling of loss to my
childhood, but years later, I did find a small photo of him amongst my
mother's effects after she had passed on. I was never in a position to own
another dog for nearly twenty-five years. She was a pedigree Beagle bitch and
I called her Tinker !
I don't remember much about how I made my "goodbyes" to the friends in my
gang and others in the village. Having moved schools, being weighed down with
homework and it being the middle of winter, I hadn't seen a lot of them for a
while. I had always been used to being on my own on Sundays and one extra
day, Saturday, was not going to make a lot of difference to my life-style at
the time. Well, early in the New Year we moved to St. Albans. I had fun to
look forward to with my English cousins and, in any case, Marilyn Griffiths
had also moved back to England...... it might not be such a bad move after
all !
Well, folks ( i.e. "both" my readers ), this is the last of the excerpts. I
hope at least some was of "historical" interest and that I did not cause too
much in the way of offence. There are large gaps in the narrative you have
been seeing, and the chronology may not be perfect. I am still getting
corrections ( and additions ) from the few older relatives I have left in
this world. My next urgent task is to knock it into shape, collate the
photographic stuff and investigate the possibility of finding a publisher who
might be prepared to give it a chance. Alternatively it will be a
small-scale, do-it-yourself job. Then, health willing, in the Spring I must
put pen to paper for a few more of the years after Ferryside. Thanks for the
comments, particularly from "across the pond". May you all have a joyous and
peaceful time. All the best,
Trevor....... as Fortinbras announces, "the rest is silence" (Hamlet).
Thank you Pauline and Richard for all your help this year, also Pat Powell
and Dave Hanson who provided so much assistance with Edwards And Dunns.
Merry Christmas one and all and as Oliver Twist would say-- Please can I
have some more Sir ! Best wishes to all Listers from William Edwards.

Hi, Pauline and Richard, Pat, Meryl and others,
Thank you all for all your help, direct and indirect, which has provided me
with so much during the past year as a result of joining the list. After a
break of 30 years, I have been in contact with 'cousins', 1st, 4th and
fifth, from Wales to US, to Australia. Great great grandfather, who turned
out to be a first cousin of one of Dave Hanson's ancestors, came to life by
the discovery of a Journal which he wrote in 1821/2. Two of the gt gt
uncles have been found to have had families in Sarawak, one of them being
persuaded by the local missionary to marry his Malay partner. Photos of one
of these uncles have been acquired, plus a photo of the 25th child of
another gt gt uncle, the grandmother of a contact in Australia. The Rhodes
House Library in Oxford produced a whole collection of original letters from
my Grandfather from Sarawak. Thanks to the Carms Record Office, the family
tree has been checked and proved, with many more details added, including
five consecutive generations of blacksmiths from Laugharne, spanning almost
200 years. Without exception, everyone has been helpful, patient, and very
knowledgeable, and I have learned a great deal as a result. Thank you all,
and a very Happy Christmas and good hunting in the New Year, to all on the
list. Oliver

Hi Pauline and Richard
Many thanks to both of you for all your hard work in assisting so many of us
to break through our brick walls.
In my case the combination of information from the 1851 Census and a
successful search for a marriage in the Record Office by Pauline has broken
down a barrier of over 20 years. The final brick will crumble when I receive
information from his ordination papers requested from the NLW.
The story of just how so much has been accomplished after a complete impasse
for so many years will have to wait until we meet again. Suffice to say that
Peter Williams in the 1861 Census actually turned out to be Peter Thomas in
the 1851 Census and with the aid of the latter and the Merlin Index all the
links to the Jenkins family of Llanddarog were revealed.
I think that further links may be established to the Williams family if you
could let me have the email address for Jane Rehms of Green Bluff, WA USA who
subscribed to CARMARTHENSHIRE-FHS-L(a)rootsweb.com and whose first email
Richard forwarded to the List on 5 May 2001 - without her email address. I
retained copy of this email as I recognised some possible members of the
families listed but did not have proof until the Pauline's findings. Now I
know we are looking at the same family.
So the year ends on a research high note and with the hope of an interesting
contact to come thanks to you both
Hoping that you will have a well earned and enjoyable rest from your labours
My best wishes for a happy Christmas and good health and prosperity in 2002
Joy
