John Street is a row of houses built by the lateMr John Daniel, Mansel
Street is so named after Richard Mansel Philipps, Esq, who owned the ground,
and Morley Street after Mr Morley, a cabinet maker whos premises extended
from Lammas Street to St Catherine's Street, which takes its name from St
Catherines Chapel, which once stood near itWoods Row is so called from Mr
Thomas Woods an Attorney, (Who died in 1811), and Barn Row, from the Tithe
Barn Which stood there.
Waterloo Terrace dates from a short time after Wellington's great victory,
the first house built in the row is that on the south side of the tabenacle
chapel, which was built by the eccentric Sion 'Sanau, who died 28 July 1828.
Picton Terrace was built shortly after the monument, and takes its name from
being near it. A Barber named Jackson lived in Jackson's Lane, a copper
named Shaw in Shaw's Lane, a schoolmaster named Parfit, in Parfit's Lane, a
dealer in crocker named Prickett, at the corner of Prickett's Lane, or Bank
Lane, the late bank of D. Morris and Sons being once at the King Street end
of the lane, and a corn merchant named Justice, who resided in Quay Street
about 70 years ago, occupied the long storehouse in Justice's Lane.
Some of these Street are no more but it does give an incite into the history
of Carmarthen Town Streets.
Does anyone who comes from Carmarthen or now lives in Carmarthen have
anything to add, and can anyone say which streets are not there now?
For those of you who may have visited Carmarthen recently, you would
probably have seen the Information in several places around the town,
informing what and why the streets were so named.
Regards
Richard James
Extract from William Spurells 'Carmarthen & Its Neighbourhood' 1879
STREETS
The town is about an mile and a quarter in length, and about half a mile in
bredth at the widest part. It consists principally of the continuous
irregular line from east to west, formed by Priory St, St.Peter Street, King
Street, Nott Square, Lower Market Street, Guildhall Square, Dark Gate,
Lammas Street, and Picton Terrace. The other principal streets are, Spilman
Street, Queen Street, Bridge Street, St Mary Street, Quay Street, Blue
Street, red Street, and Water Street.
The origin of most of these names is pretty obvious. Lammas street
(Loaf-mass-street), Like priory street, may probably be traced to the
religeous establishment in the neighbourhood. The names of Blue Street (at
first called Golden Grove St) and Red Street are to be traced to the two
political parties, Spilman Street is in some way connected with the Spilman
ro Spelman family mentioned in some old local deeds.
Lower Market Street was so named in contradistinction to Upper Market
Street, now Nott Square, Water Street from the stream which now crosses
under the road near the turnpike gate, and Little Water Street, from the
water flowing from the hillside, which was diverted near Waendew to form a
fishpond in the grounds of Furnace House, before finding its way to the
Towy.
Dark Gate marks the situation of one of the five town gates. Dame Street, a
mistaken refinment of Dam Street, is so called from a mill-dam at its upper
end, Its new name Mill street, obscures the history of the neighbourhood.
The Cock mill would more properly give its name to Blue Street, where it
stood.

Hello George Alan Jones
Thanks for your e-mail - I have looked through the IGI for these people -
don't think that with the information given you will have much luck .....
I have a James Rees baptised 25-12-1821 to a Thomas Rees and Mary Bowen in
Carmarthen
I do not have one for Jane with the same parents - there are various other
ones, but not the ones required
The IGI has Llanedi covered by B.T's 96% 1738-1862 - Ebenezer Cal. Meth
1812-1837 and Llanedi Newhouse Independent from 1734-1837
I have a baptism for a Jane Rees in 1810 from Newhouse Indendent, father Rees
Rees.
I would recommend viewing the original parish registers for Llanedi to see if
these people baptised their children, maybe they baptised them all in one go.
I had one like that that I posted onto the list a few weeks ago. It was a
whole family being baptised together, and the vicar had made a note that
these people were leaving for America the following day.
You never know - you are pre census - where did they say they were from in
the census you have them in? Do you have any census returns for them? If
you have more information perhaps we could find them

Hello Charles
The Carmarthen RO is not exactly sure when they are closing - but it may be
around August time -
When we find out we will let you know on the webb - at the moment we are
trying to finish indexing the burials - because when it is closed we will not
be able to do research until it reopens
So ---- if anyone wants to research their family they had better do it now,
or wait until Xmas time
Bye
Pauline

Hi Pauline
I have read references to a book on Llangendeirne in a couple of messages.
Could you give me any more detail, author, title, publisher etc.? I am
very interested in anything on Llangendeirne and would like to borrow
through the inter-library service if possible, but I need the above details
to do so.
Thanks
Ceinwen
Hello Pauline,
In the last century some of my ancestors gave their parish of birth as
Llanedy and Llanon. Given that the parish of Llanelli covered just the
town centre as we know it now, what for example, would Dafen have come
under? Also the Sandy area even though it is in Llanelli has always been
in the rural not urban council so what would Sandy have come under in
the census. On the electoral role its Hengoed ward.
Does this make sense, you wanted questions :-)

Hello Ceinwen
Thanks for your e-mail - I did have this book (handwritten) but I returned it
to the person who has it. I will in due course (end of the week I hope) have
it again, I've only got to call in to get it, it only gives the background of
Llangendeirne though not any records - I'm not sure if there is a book on
Llangendeirne - I'll have to find out.
Does anyone on this list have any knowledge of a printed book on
Llangendeirne?? If so let us know .
I'll find out for you Ceinwen - speak soon

Hello Evan
I've just looked in the 1891 return for Public houses and the following is
what I found.
Trevose Head - Gladmore Road Llanelly - lease 99 years Sir AKC Stepney -
lessee, Margaret Richards, tenant Owen Rees.
Looks like it's too early for your Jenkins - any dates that you can think of
- would they be around for the 1881 census? If so give me the names and
possible dates, we'll see what we can do again.

Hi Pauline,
Did you get my request for a look up in Slaters directory for Hughes' corn

Thanks in anticipation,
