Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hello All
Carmarthen RO will soon be in full swing, it has really gone well, and John,
David, Caroline and Pat have worked extremely hard to ensure that we can all
use these facilities as soon as possible.
We went there last week and were overwhelmed at the space that we now have
to view the registers, John the Senior Archivist took us all around to show
us where the records and registers are housed - it means now that we will be
able to view registers between the hours of 12.30 and 1.30 - this was not
allowed before because of the access to the registers - it is going to be so
much easier.
They have 10 new microfiche readers in the one room, which will be so much
easier for those of us who use St Catherine's house indexes and various
other records held on microfiche (ours are also included there) and there is
just so much space, those of you who have used the old record offices will
see the difference.
The census returns are now housed here, and in another building the
Registry office is situated - everything can now be done under the same roof
so to speak.
Another thing is that we can now park on the premises - no more walking in
the pouring rain (it always rains in Carmarthen) back and forth from the
library to the record office - wonderful.
I did forget to ask their address - I will obtain this by the end of the
week - they do have a new telephone contact number which is:
01267 228232
This is a direct number to the record offices.....
hope this information helps - so we're back in business now -
regards
Pauline

Good morning Pauline.
It is sunny but quite cold here this morning.Roll on the summer!!!
no I haven't heard from anyone who has purchased the census themselves. This
is the reply I had to my query as to the completeness of the census. It seems
hard to think that a company such as this would give false advertising, but
then again ,I suppose you never know!!I always expect the best in people,my
husband despairs sometimes!!!! but I have very rarely been let down. and on
those few occasions, well I am known to have a fiery Welsh temper!!!!!!!!
til next time

Thank you for your inquiry. Yes, this is the full 1851 census for
England and Wales, and yes we can accept payment by check.
However, the check must be in U.S. funds. Your bank should be able
to tell you how they can do this for you.

Here is another part of the article on William Morris of Coomb that
describes the house he had built.
After the death of his cousin David Morris, M.P., half of whose fortune had
fallen to him, William moved to Coomb or Cwrn in the parish of Llangynog and
within easy reach of his paternal acres around Llanste'ffan. The ancient
family mansion of Cwm. had been accquired by Thomas Morris, senior, of
Llansteffan Cottage together with lands and manorial rights over Penrhyn
following the downfall of the original owners. The mansion of Cwm. as its
name suggests is in a picturesque dingle. Its name was anglicised to Coomb
and it was here that Mr. Morris built a large and commodious mansion to
replace the original house. The latter and its contents have been described
in a recent article." Judging from its rather marked architectural style 'it
wouldappear' that the new house was designed by R. Kyrke Penson. He lived
for a time at Robert's Rest, Ferryside and was much in demand in West Wales
as an erector of churches, builder of schools and mansions e.g. Dynevor
Castle, Westfa near Llanelli for Mr. C. W. Nevill, and Bronwydd in
Cardiganshire for Thomas Davies Lloyd (whose niece married Tom Morris of
Coomb).
Coomb is an attempt to recreate a Tudor manor house. The general effect
is plain and the architect has avoided such scenic and extravagant
embellishments as may be seen at Bronwydd and Dynevor. The house is built of
local stone with freestone dressings. It is gabled and dormered, and at
right angles to the entrance and terrace elevations stands the chef d'oeuvre
of the whole exercise, a lofty tower with mock machicolations forming a
corbel course supporting a short spire. While the designer inclines towards
the odd and pseudo-baronial in some details, -the incongruous tower, a
Romanesque arch with a cinque foil window above the front door, an octagon
billiard room surmounted by a clerestory and tiled dome-the redeeming
features of the house are its broad surface of wall for the eye to rest on
and elevations generally free from meaningless and profuse ornament. The
garden front is broken at terrace level by a central bay window, with a
balcony above it punctuated by quatrefoil openings.
The philosophy behind this type of house was to convey an air of
dignified repose, jovial hospitality, lordly splendour and (so they thought)
a more artistic creation than the cold, formal mansions of the Georgian era.
The Morrises enjoyed country life and wanted a house which would remind them
of ancient times when there was feasting in the hall, tilting in the
courtyard, when the yule log crackled on the hearth and mummers beguiled the
dulness of a winter's evening. The lord of the manor felt proud of his broad
acres and imagined his bowling green filled with lusty youths, while gentle
dames sat spinning in their boudoirs, and in the deep window recesses family
groups watched as gallant cavaliers rode out a-hawking.
Morris and his wife thus lived in a very opulent style which caused some
qualms of anxiety to Thomas Charles Morris his elder brother and partner at
the bank. William possessed a more hearty and jolly nature than Thomas
Charles, and was physically more sturdy. Although forthright and blunt in
expressing his views, nevertheless he was genial and lighthearted.
Kate
I have just scanned pages from the Carmarthen Antiquary VII, 1971 on William
Morris of Coomb. I thought others might be interested in the article.
There is too much for one message and I don't believe I can send an attached
file. So I will post a portion of it and if you want the whole article and
can receive attached files, I will gladly send it to you.
Meanwhile, if anyone has photos of Coomb Mansion, I would be delighted to
receive a copy. On of our ancestors served as a humble footman in the home
of Thomas Morris and later moved to a house on the Coomb estate. I believe
he was an estate manager, but I am not sure of his role. His name was John
Morris, but, to my knowledge, of no relation to Thomas.
Taken from 'The Carmarthen Antiquary VII, 1971
WILLIAM MORRIS OF COOMB
William the second son of Thomas and Maria Morris was born on 25th June
1811, and was educated at the Old Grammar School at Carmarthen before
entering the family banking business. He was very active in municipal
affairs
and was mayor of Carmarthen in 1842,1844,1851, and 1852. As a tribute to his
last term of office a public testimonial was made to him at a function held
in the Ivy Bush. The proceedings were organised by Lewis Morris, Mayor, and
a superb piece of plate in the form of an epergne was presented to Mr.
William Morris. In the congratulatory speeches before some hundred and forty
guests, it was explained how Morris had been instrumental in bringing many
benefits to the town. In the opening of the South Wales Railway he had been
an active pioneer and through his efforts a market building had been erected
for the sale of livestock and produce. This was second to none in the
Principality and the source of considerable revenue in the borough. During
his various periods of office Mr. Morris had taken steps to remove nuisances
and as guardian of public health he had secured a plentiful supply of water
for the town while every step had been taken to fight pestilence and
disease. Moreover manufacturing industries in the town and county had
greatly benefited from Mr. Morris' help. It was natural therefore that such
a person of influence), who was also highly esteemed in the community should
have been chosen as High Sheriff of the county in 1858. At this time he
displayed on his carriage panels and trumpeters' banners the Morris coat of
arms originally given to Thomas Morris for his year of Shrievalty in 1834.
Morris was also a Justice of the Peace and a Deputy Lieutenant of the
county. On the death of his cousin David Morris, M.P. in 1864, Morris was
elected to represent the united boroughs of Carmarthen and Llanelli a
position he held for four years. He was chiefly responsible for the erection
of a large memorial window (completed in 1866) in the north transept of St.
Peter's Church, Carmarthen in honour of his predecessor David Morris, M.P.,
and the stone tracery of this window was executed by R. Kyrke Penson the
architect.

Hi Veronica
In England and Wales there were over 17 million people in England and Wales
at the time of the 1851 census - how many discs are these supposed to be
on??
Thanks for the info, do you know of anyone who has bought this yet??

Having read about "The Story of Carmarthen" by Joyce and Victor Lodwick
on the Carmarthenshire lists, I decided that I wanted to read this
book. I was able to locate a copy through the Internet but felt it was
too pricey, especially with shipping from England. Then I went to my
local library and requested an inter-library loan search.
Well, they found a copy but I hadn't anticipated that the only copy they
could find would be at Harvard! Anyway, Harvard charges $23 to send it
to my local library so I decided to go ahead. I now have the book and am
enjoying it. I am reading it all the way through first and then will go
back over the parts I am interested in. I really think the maps inside
the front and back covers are worth the price. Part of my family lived
on Priory Street and its nice to see where that is on the map.

Hello Pauline
First - regarding ordering fiche, in case you don't know, you send an e-
mail to
repro-ordering(a)pro.gov.uk
with a list of what you require and they then reply with the price for
you to confirm your order or not.
Second - A copy of my query follows:-
Hello Pauline and Richard
Welcome back. Hope your trip was enjoyable enough to make up for our
saturday's disappointment.
I have a little query (having given up for the moment on my Pembrey John
family)
Lots of my family seem to be hovering on the borders of pembrokeshire
and carmarthenshire. e.g Llandissilio , Egremont, baptisms in henllan
Amgoed but living in llandewi Velfey .
The thing is:- Llandissilio and Egremont occur in the 1851 census index
that I have with sometimes PEM and sometimes CMN as the county.
Also there are entries in the Pembrokeshire Marriage index.
What I don't know is
Would there be more entries in an 1851 carmarthenshire census and
Carmarthenshire marriage index or would the same entries just be
repeated?
Also in Bert Rawlins book of churches and chapels he shows llandissilio
West in Cararthenshire and Llandissilio East in Pembrokeshire.
That sounds the wrong way round to me.
......HELP!!!!!
Any bit of info to clarify matters would be welcome. I want to make sure
I am looking at all possible sources of information.
Thanks very much
Bye for now
Pat

I think they are mistaken.
I have e-mailed Evertons to ask them to clarify matters with the
manufacturer FTM. Will let you all know what they reply.

Hello Kate
There are several problems here.
First of all the census fiche I referred to for Haverfordwest was for
1891.
Secondly out of all the possible John Morris how have you pinpointed
the one in Carmarthen - I presume you mean Carmarthen shire as there is
not an obvious one in Carmarthen town in 1881.
Do you mean the footman in Llangunnock in a Morris household?
I do have the 1851 H'west town transcription although I am not down on
the look-up list for it, so if you tell me the details of the 1891 entry
- the children's names might hold a clue, but as in my experience people
in the pembrokeshire area moved around a lot - so that the family may
not be in Haverfordwest town.
The only Morris family in City road in 1851 that I have found is:-
John Morris H M 36 Tailor H'west
Martha Thomas M 35 wife "
Henry Morris son 15 shoemaker
William son 13 school
James son 11 " "
John son 9 " "
Maria dau 3 "
Richard son 6mth "
David Owen LG 79 pauper
As you have John Moses Morris' birth date why not send to Haverfordwest
Register office for his birth certificate and that will give you the
parents's names. Then I can be more help to you.
Bye for now
Pat

Hi Pat,
I would like a look up on your Haverfordwest fiche, please, if it is
no trouble. I am looking for a MORRIS family living on City Road. The
person, I am stuck at John Moses MORRIS wasn't born until 1862, but maybe,
just maybe, there is a clue to his parentage or even siblings. I know it is
a long shot as there are so many MORRISs around.
His name is John Moses MORRIS and in the family Bible, it gives his birth as
April 13, 1862, City Road, St Martins Parish, Haverfordwest. City Road,
could be the street where they lived.name of their residence. I have found
him in Carmarthen in 1881 and by 1891 he was married with children. But it
is finding his parents that has me stalled.
Thanks,
Kate

Hi this is veronica again.
I just received an e.mail back from Everton saying,"Yes,this is the full
census for england and wales 1851,"
and they can accept a cheque payment from australia providing it is in usa
dollars!!!!!!!
Thanks Pam - yes I have. I have also found a large contingent of GLS/west
country GRAVEL(L)'s . These were brushmakers and sellers travelling around.
I cannot hook the link from GLA to Kidwelly though. I suppose there's always
next year or the one after !!

Hello Nina
Sorry, you are wrong. The PRO will sell you *any* census year, on fiche or
film. You have to state which you prefer when you order. I buy most of my
censuses from PRO and have always ordered fiche. I have several regions
for 1851 and 1891 and am waiting for some 1871 at present - all purchased
from PRO @ GBP2.60 per fiche plus p&p. The PRO fiche are unindexed - but
are filmed from the original census books so contain much valuable
information which may not be included in an indexed version.

Good morning from australia
Well I found it!.It was everton publishers where I saw the posting for the
1851 census of the uk.Price $49.00 american.
It is the complete census with all relevant information.
all the best
veronica
Pauline,
I was told that it was all of Britain, including Wales, his words not mine. In
any case they have a 90 day money-back guarantee. I don't have the URL and
we're leaving in a few minutes for Visalia, CA to be with our son for
Thanksgiving. Since I get fifty or sixty e-mails per day, I'll be unsubscribing
Carmarthen, Powys and a few other lists in a few moments. I will try to find
out more when I return Monday. In the mean time, you in Britain, Australia, N.Z,
Canada and wherever have a good time while we in the U.S. are being thankful for
Richard and Pauline and all the great listers on this board.
Regards,
Art
