Hello
I thought that I would just mention the following:
I have a person who by a last resort came to myself at Swalesidx(a)aol.com to
know if I had ever heard of the name 'Daven' in Wales. To my surprise and to
the delight of the person concerned I was able to tell her - yes I know where
Dafen/Daven is, I only live just over a mile away from there. It is only a
village alongside Llanelli, it is not a parish in itself. It was very
fruitful in the 1800's due to the Tinworks and brickworks which was built
there, and it brought so much employment, that people from all around
different parishes went to work there.
I have now been able to furnish her with census returns, marriage and birth
certificates, she was so pleased because she had spent 3 winters trying to
locate this place through various sources - thus what a treasure the internet
has been in Genealogy enabling people from all walks of life to pursue their
family tree no matter what country they live in!!
On looking further I found a Wonderful book called 'Dafen Recollections' by
Byron Davies, which was published by Llanelli Borough Council in 1996.
It gave census breakdowns, the height of some people, or the lack of it. Plus
all the history of the tinworks, the brickworks, all the stories about
cricket, rugby, choir's, schooling etc. It is a marvellous book to read. It
is a bit on the heavy side thus not being able to post a copy to Ohio - it
would prove to costly to post locally but what a must for my collection!!
I hope this has made interesting reading for someone out there - keep on
asking......
Regards
Pauline James
Here's a little information about several of the Southern parishes of
Carmarthenshire, and how the population changed between 1800 & 1900.
Notice how Llanelli grew in 100 years, it is said that in 1795 Llanelli only
had 500 residents, if that, the increase there of nearly 1000% is mainly
because of the tinworks and the coal industry
