Martha Rudd has generously sent her notes about Carmans which she gathered
while searching other surnames. She is not a Carman researcher.
In a previous message she wrote
"There are quite a few deaths and marriages I gleaned from Highgate town
records.(I think I have copied up to the 1890's.) The records are scant
and I kept finding the Carman name running through some of the families I
was researching so I copied the records. There is also an article from
the Branches and Twigs periodical, Vol 10 # 2 on the Carman Cemetery with
mentions of Abraham and Jacob, a Gazeteer mention and an 1850 census on
Jacob's family. Branches and Twigs was an outgrowth of the Vt. Historical
Society, I believe."
She has now sent her notes.
Carman Information from Highgate, VT Records: Early marriages, births and

CARMAN CEMETERY, HIGHGATE, FRANKLIN COUNTY, VERMONT
TREE STUMPS:
"At a distance of over 1/4 mile away from the well-kept and large dairy farm
of Gilles Fortin, of Fortin Rd., Highgate---hidden away, and long neglected,
but completely fenced in---is a small private cemetery used over a century ago
by the CARMAN family. Most of the stones were fallen, many were broken, and
illegible, but we were able to read most of them, with the kind and polite
assistance of 13 year old Allen Fortin, son of Gilles. We found the following
stones: 1. Abraham CARMAN d 5-10-1839 (born ca 1750) 2. Eve CARMAN
w/Abraham d 9-13-1841 (born ca 1750) 3. Jacob CARMAN b Jan 1800 - d 9/1870
4. Diana A CARMAN 1st w/Jacob (dates unreadable) 5. Thankful CARMAN 2nd
w/Jacob 7-31-1818 to 9-1879 6. Little Arthur s/Hethbert & Mary Smith d
9-22-1874 7. Little Clark d 5-30-1852 and Edgar Smith (these two on one
stone) 8. Augusta CARMAN 8-10-1845 (George A. Baker apparently on same
stone) and 9. Mary E. CARMAN w/Orsmer B. McGowan d 5-7-1863.
From Child's County Gazeteer & Directory 1882-3 page (Town of
Highgate);
"Abram Carmon, from Rhinebeck, NY came to Highgate about the year
1800, and
located upon 100 acres of land which he had purchased of HEMAN ALLEN. He
reared a family of 10 children and died at an advanced age. John, the 2nd
child, was born in 1788, died here in 1870, having had a family of 9
children, of whom the youngest Peter, is now (1882) one of the oldest
residents of the town. Jacob Carmon, son of Abram, was born here (Highgate) 1
Jan 1800 on the farm now owned by his son Sanford U. He reared a family of 10
children and died in 1870.
The 1850 Vermont Census - Highgate - Franklin Co. lists: Jacob Carman 50-M-
farmer; Thankful Carman -35-F; Sanford Carman 22-M (b 7 Feb 1828, d 10 May
1907); Mary Carman -11-F; Martha Carman - 10-F; Lucy Carman-7-F; Augusta
Carman -5-F Willard (?) Carman -3-M; Sanford Church-25-M-laborer; Hannah
Church-25-F.
We have a copy of the Deed from Abram Carman to his son Jacob, written in
1826, and witnesses by Conrad Sax and Clarrissa (?) Sax. We also found in the
Highgate Town Hall, a record of the marriage of Diana Sunderlin to Jacob in
1826. We later found a record of the marriage of Thankful Sunderlin to Jacob
in 1833 (think they were sisters). My husband (Merritt L. Aseltine, Jr.)
father, Merritt L. Aseltine Sr. was the son of Anson L. Aseltine and Lucy D
(Carman) Aseltine. Lucy D. Carman was the daughter of Jacob Carman and
Thankful Sunderlin Carman. Lucy D (Carman) Aseltine b Dec 1842-d 21 Oct
1869. Buried at Old Swanton Cemetery, Swanton, VT Submitted by Lois E.
Aseltine Member # 2028, August 20, 1980."
