Subject: Success RDC
Friends & cousins:
Success was a community within the Town of Hempstead, I have learned. I
stumbled across the Success RDC records kind of by accident on a film having
several items. Now that I've finally gotten around to typing up my notes, I
thought I might as well share them with the list. These are very selective
notes--I was only interested in records mentioning members of the Snediker
family--but a number of other surnames of possible interest pop up here and
there. The index numbers noted correspond to the system used by Harold and
Walt Snedeker in Snedeker (etc.) Families (1970) and The Book of Snedekers
(1992), respectively. Comments on marriages and parentage are also derived
from those works.
Regards,
Ted Snediker

Baptisms end with p. 25. Thereafter is a short member list dated 15 June
1765, not copied) and then Consistory Records.
Church Masters Book: "This is the Churchmasters Book for the Nether Dutch
Reformed Church of Hemste in Queens County on the Island of Nassau in the
Colony of New York."
pp. 33-36: Minutes of an organizational meeting about the construction of the
church, 14 April 1731: "were gathered together the Nether Dutch Reformed
Congregation of the village of Hemstes in Queens County on the Island of
Nassau and have agreed before long to proceed (nu in 't kort voorttegaan)
with the building of a church or house of God at Success within the limits of
the said village" Members were assessed to finance the building. These
included:
Eysack Snedeker, 1 5s
Gerret Snedaker, 1 0s
[These amounts were on the low end of the scale. These were most likely
Isaac 412 and one of the three Gerret Snedekers of that generation, all of
whom ended up living at Wolver Hollow.]
Seats were to be sold by lots: 12s for a man's seat, 8s for a woman's seat.
A pew list appears on pp. 38-48.
Of the original subscription:
Men's Pew 5: Isack Snedeker, Ida Monfoort, Doores van Wyk, Jr., Douwe Ditmar,
Jr., Barent Blom, Marten Reyerzon. [There were 17 pews for men.]
Women's Pew 3: Gerret Snedeker, Abram Monfoort, Jan Vanderbilt, Isack
Hendricksen, Areaen Onderdonck, Dooreis Van Wyck, Jr. (2), James Smith,
Martynis Wilse, Gerret Dorlant.
Then follow re-sales and inheritances of pews, seat transfers and reversions.
Transfers were usually to an heir or widow, for a payment of 3s.
p. 41: 1733 undated: "The man's seat of Barent Blom has been transferred to
Gerret Blom - No. 5.
p. 46: July 26, 1762: "was transferred the place of Isaac Snedeker to his son
Cristeyane Snedeker - No. 5
[This again would be Isaac 412 and Christiaen 538. Implication here is that
Isaac died about 1762, a date not established in the published genealogies.]
Entries end 23 August 1786.
Then comes "Articles About the Rebuilding and Reparing of the Nether Dutch
Reformed Church of Success," pp. 49-50, 4 September 1786. Following that is
an accounting of pew sales (pp. 51-52) dated 4 September 1786:
No. 6, Elsie Snedeker, 1 seat (drawn by lot).
Other women's seats were alloted to men, implying that she was a widow.
The latest entries were from 1813, 15 March, a minute of a joint meeting of
the consistories of Oyster Bay and Success.
