Alexander's father is Elijah b.1705. Stillwell Carman"s prodigious work,Book #12
makes that clear. The cover reads: BOOK # 12 Richard Carman,Alexander Carman,Nathaniel
Carman,Nicholas Carman. In the lower left hand corner: Sullivan Co. New York. The rest of
Book#12 is about the descendants of Elijah Carman. Page#3: Elijah Carman, children:

Co.N.Y. b.1749 d.1823 @Rochester Sullivan Co. 1st. m. Catherine ______(illegible and
followed by "high dutch") children: James b._____, #53 Joseph b. 1772, Nicholas

b.1808,James,Hannah,Elizabeth,Jessie,Polly,Charles,Robert. Note at bottom of page: Joseph
Carman#53 and his brother Nicholas settled at Binghamton Broome Co.N.Y.in early times.
Joseph Carman father lived and owned a large farm at Old Paltz. (Stillwell wa!
s a man in a hurry and his numbering system really works if you don't get confused.)
Elijah's record continues (it may be Book#13-if it is,I didn't copy the title
page) "No.1. Elijah Carman-still living Jan'y 22nd 1803-born about 1705"
Eleven children with his first wife Elizabeth Bloodgood are recorded-Alexander is missing.
But Stillwell notes:"Delila Carman says some of his first children went to
Philadelphia and she says his first wife's children were
William,Caleb,Jonathan,Joshua,Nathaniel,Daniel,Jehiel,Alexander and Stephen,but not
sure". "Elijah Carman Jr.said his father by his first wife had 13 children"
Somehow, whoever Stillwell was interviewing forgot Alexander- maybe on purpose if he was a
Loyalist. Alexander b.1749 would fit between Jonathan b.1748 and Joshua b.1752. Just how
many Elijahs and Alexanders could be circulating in the wilderness and tiny settlements of
the colony of New York only four generations after Grandfather John landed on Nassau
Island?(Long !
Island) Elijah is the Great Progenitor of this branch of the Carmans. That is what
Books#12 and !3 are all about. People have been convicted with less evidence. Clarence
Ellis Carman
