I'm simply curious about why people are so interested in this subject.
I meant nothing of a derogatory nature. I guess finding it interesting
is an acceptable reason. However, so far anyway, none of the suggested
origins seem to have anything to do with specific Carman lineages.
I apologize to anyone who may have been offended by my question.

Well, I'm not sure what to say to a valued subscriber and contributor,
and I hope you will indulge those of us who find the subject
interesting.
For myself, I find it very interesting that the name is ancient and has
survived, altered in spelling, but not translated, for so many years
over such a wide territory -- even though we dont have documentation to
connect John Carman who emmigrated from England in the 1630s to any
specific family.
