No, no, no, no -- I didnt make this up! Seveeral 'antiquarian resrouces'
refer to Carmania which was
a part of the Persian Empire (now Iraw and East of the Red Sea) and
encountered by Alexander the Great when he marched to the East in 280 b.c.
My thought is that this area existed when the Greeks and Persians fought
in 480 b.c. You should see Karman - or some spelling variant as a region
on modern maps.
I also encountered in the last week some reference to the Carman surnames
in Holland, Netherland and France.
Thans for the opportunity to use my new buzz-word 'anqiquarian resources'
which I picked up on Saturday from reading "NJ History" about the radical
Whigs in NJ during the American Revolutionary Era.
Tomorrow I will try to put together a list of sources for this
information, which was popular in the 1800s and even in the first half of
20 century.
Successful searching

Admit it - you made up that last bit! Where in the world was Carmania?? I always
thought it was a disease suffered by those doing Carman family history!
Is it really that rare to find an instance of a name no further back that 1025?
