The variant lists are up and running now and this is Rootsweb's advice at
the present time.
What's the definitive strategy for handling this issue?
What we recommend that people do is this:
* If you are interested in both spellings, subscribe to both lists.
* Don't crosspost. If you're posting something about SURNAME
ancestors, post it to SURNAME-L. If you're posting something
about
SIRNAME ancestors, post it to SIRNAMR-L.
Many people on SURNAME-L will wind up subscribing to SIRNAME-L, but
if
you don't crosspost, they will only see the posts once. Doing things
this way also means that people who are only interested in one variant
of the surname will not have to wade through postings on the other
variant.
For myself, I am, in most cases, subscribing to the other list but not
posting and sort of waiting to see how it all works out in a couple of
other cases.
Your contribution here is valuable as this is another way to keep public
information free on the net. Your patience and flexibility
are a contribution and a valuable and a part of
this effort.
