" I found two short notes in my files that I will share with you today.
Flip and coin and see which one is the right information.
Both notes are from Linda [snip] [of] New Jersey . Both are dated
10/28/1974.
No.1. Notes taken from the book, JOHN CARMAN OF HEMPSTEAD,
LONG ISLAND AND SOME OF HIS DESCENDANTS THRU HIS SON JOHN2,
by Henry Alanson Tredwell, Jr. 1946. A typed manuscript.
This was in the New York Public Library, NY, NY.
"The author states that John Carman, progenitor of our
line, married Florence Fordham in 1632. He states
emphatically that she was NOT the daughter of Rev. Robert
Fordham but does not continue to say why he believes this or
give any substantial proof to that statement. You will take
note, however, that in the book, CARMAN GENEALOGY, by
William Stilwell Carman, Mr WM. Carman says that Florence
was the supposed SISTER of Rev. Robert Fordham.
Mr. Tredwell, JR. says that Caleb married Elizabeth ____
and refers to (NJW 1:82). Caleb lived in Jamaica, Long
Island and in Cape May."
No.2. Notes taken from the book, GENEALOGIES OF LONG ISLAND
FAMILIES, compiled by Charles J. Werner. Published by Chas.
J. Werner, NY,NY, 1919. This book was in the New York Public
Library, NY,NY.
" This author said that Florence Carman, wife of John
Carman was "believed" to have been the daughter of Rev.
Robert Fordham. John Carman moved from Roxbury, Mass., to
Lynn, MAss. where he remained till 1637. He then moved to
Sandwich, Mass., and later to Hempstead, Long Island.
John Carman died 1653 and Florence died 1656. Handwritten
into this book in pencil after the date of Florence's death
was "ERROR". Evidently another unknown reader disagreed with
the author's data.
Children of John and Florence Carman were given as:
John - b. 7/8/1633; m. Hannah ____ in 1660; d.1684
Benjamin - d. 1694
Abigail - b. 1635; m. Benjamin Coe
Caleb - b. 6 August 1639; d. 1643
Joshua - b. 1649
Caleb - b. 9 January 1645 - born blind
John (son of John and Florence) and his wife, Hannah had
the following children: John, Caleb, Samuel, Thomas, Joshua,
Joseph, and Abigail.
Benjamin (son of John and Florence) died in 1694 and his
will mentions the following children of his: Benjamin, a
mute who had a son named Benjamin; John, who evidently died
before 1759 and had a son named John; Sarah; Dinah; and
Mary."
