Message Board Post:
I have a David Sidney Carman who was born 29 Apr 1845 in Sauk Co., WI Territory. He had
three older siblings, all of which died before 1850. David’s father was Sidney Carman,
born in NY. Sidney must have been born between 1810-1820. Sidney’s wife, Mary Ann Unknown,
was born 05 Jan 1818 in Louisville, Jackson Co., KY.
I find positively NOTHING on-line that might match my Sidney Carman, except the
information found on this board about a Sidney Carman who was born 03 Apr 1812 in NY. My
problem is that he (the Sidney Carman posted about here) died 1888 in KS. So, this cannot
be my Sidney Carman. My Sidney Carman must have died between 1840-1849. His wife, Mary,
remarried in IA in 1850 and she and her new husband, John Heilman, raised David Sidney
Carman, along with four more children that came along after their marriage.
I also have found the following in The History of Linn County, Iowa:
Subject: John Heilman
“<snip>He was married May 16, 1850, to Mrs. Mary Ann Carman… <snip>… by her
first husband (Sydney Carman), Mrs. H. had four children, one of whom is living, David S.
Carman, born April 29, 1845; the deceased are Anne, Delia and Lucinda…<snip>”
David Sidney Carman went on to raise a large family (11 children) in Iowa. From there, the
family spread to MN, WA, OR, and CA. Throughout David’s life, he consistently indicated on
census records that his father (Sidney Carman) was born in NY and that his mother was born
in KY, so I believe that birth place for his father to be accurate.
On the 1840 Federal Census of Sauk Co., WI Territory, I find my Sidney Carman and family.
Living with him are his wife, 2 young daughters, another male (age 30-40) and another
three males (ages 20-30). Presumably, these other males are family members, but they also
could have been boarders or hired help, of course. There is only one other Carman family
living in WI Territory during that time… several counties away from Sauk in Milwaukee
County: Edmond Carman, who appears to have a rather large family consisting of several
young children. I have found no relationship between these two men, other than the shared
surname.
Any assistance with the family will be greatly appreciated.
