Hi Emmy
My name is Mark Clairmont. Here is the information I have for John & Rachel Burton
Carman : They married Jan 24, 1735, in St. Luke's Parish in Queen Anne's County,
Maryland. (Maryland Marriages, 1634-1777. This was also stated in a Sparks Family 19
page Genealogy Paper).
The following comes from the paper: "Three children of this union were baptized at
St. Luke's, according to the surviving register: Burton Carman, born June 25, 1737,
buried September 12, 1737; Rebecca Carman, born November 5, 1738; and William Burton
Carman, born February 27, 1740 (baptized April 19, 1740). William Burton Carman must have
died about 1766 according to the papers settling his estate. His widow, Elizabeth, had
been married to Thomas Godwin before the estate was settled, at which time two surviving
Carman children were identified as William Burton Carman, Jr., and John Carman, both of
whom wee "under age." We believe that future research will prove that Anna
Carman, who was married to Stephen Sparks, was a daughter of William Burton Carman, Jr.,
or of John Carman." I would like to see a copy of the papers settling the estate.
I need to find these records.
The subject of the genealogy paper is the union between Anne Carman (John &
Rachel's granddaughter) and her husband Stephen Sparks, who moved from Maryland to
Ohio. Their son, John Burton Sparks and his wife Susan Garner Sparks had a daughter
(actually they had many children) who they named Maria Dell Sparks. Maria Dell Sparks
then married Louis D. Clairmont. So you can see my interest in learning about the Burton
& Carman Families, the Carman & Sparks Families, and the Sparks & Clairmont
Families.
I also have a copy of a Will Abstract for John Carman, dated Feb 16, 1746. It identifies
his wife Rachel Carman and their son William Burton Carman, but more interesting, it
identifies a son named "Henry Cully Carman". I think he was the older son
because he inherited "Hawkins Range" but WIlliam Burton only received 2
shillings. The Will does not mention Rebecca Carman. William Carman Jr. was a witness to
the will. I would like a copy of this will.
I also found two Will Abstracts (William Carman, Sr. dated May 3, 1736) and Rebecca
Carman, dated March 7, 1740) Both Wills identify their children (Thomas, James, William,
John and Elizabeth Carman Hollinsworth). I entered this family information in my family
tree, and
Ancestry.com notified me that you had similar information in your family tree.
I noticed you had some dates for some of the people discussed above, so I contacted you in
hopes to find where you received your information. I also noticed you have William Carman
Sr.'s father's name and his information. Interesting - how did you find him and
where did you get your information?
I can see from my research the Carman/Burton families were a very tight group, and I was
surprised to see that Elizabeth Sparks married William Burton Sparks. I just joined
Ancestry.com and have only been researching my family history for a month. This is fun
and interesting.
Anyway, if your are interested in my information just send me your email and I will
forward to you the Will Abstracts and the Genealogy Paper discussed above. My email is
mark(a)clairmontcpa.com and the name of my family tree is Clairmont/Sieffert Family Tree.
Mark
