Hi Emmy, here is a very brief discussion about my knowledge of the Carman/Burton Families
leading to Stephen Sparks and Anne Carman.
BURTON/CARMAN/SPARKS FAMILIES
CONCLUDING WITH STEPHEN SPARK & ANNE CARMAN SPARKS
William Burton Sr. (Born 1630 - Died 1699) married (Mrs. William Burton Born 1625). I
obtained the dates from Family Search (see the citations in the profile).
I learned of his children through a William Burton Will Abstract, dated April 30, 1698,
which is attached to William Burton's profile. The Abstract lists his children as:
William Burton Jr.'s (Born 1656),Margaret Burton (Born 1650), Mary Burton (Born 1652)
and Hannah (Born 1654). The dates of birth come from Family Search and the citations all
identify William Burton Sr. as the father. The Abstract states Margaret Burton Carman
will inherit the land taken up jointly with her husband, Thomas Carman. Attached to
William Burton's profile is a list of lands the Burtons owned from 1681 - 1737, which
lists three different William Burtons (I need to identify which William Burton fathered
Rachel Burton). It appears that the land jointly purchased with the Carman family was
purchase in 1681. Also, the list of properties identify three William Burtons. I
don't know for sure which William Burton fathered Rachel Burton (See below.)
Thomas Carman (Born 1640) married Margaret Burton Carman (Born 1650)
They had at least two children: William Carman (Born 1662 Died 1736) and Thomas Carman
Jr. (Born 1668). The dates come from Family Search. The citation for William
Carman's relationship to Thomas and Margaret Carman is Film #44710.
William Carman (Born 1662 Died 1736) married Rebecca.
I found a Will Abstract for William Carman, dated May 3, 1736 that identifies his wife
Rebecca and their children. The Abstract is attached to William's profile. The
children listed are: Rebecca Carman (1688 - 1749), William Jr. Carman (1688), John Carman
(1690), Thomas Carman (1692), James Carman (1694) and Elizabeth Carman (1696). The Will
Abstract also identifies his grandson, William Burton Carman. I am not sure of the dates
of birth that I obtained from the Family Search, since many citations have different dates
for each person listed, but the citations all identified William and Rebecca Carman as the
parents. I noticed you have different dates in your family tree than what I have for the
children. I could be wrong with my dates. I also found a citation for the Will (Film
#445710).
John Carman (Born 1690) married Rachel Burton (No Dates) on Jan 14, 1735, in St.
Luke's Parish in Queen Anne's County, Maryland. The sources for this information
are: (Maryland Marriages, 1655-1850) and (Stephen Sparks & Anne Carman 19 page
genealogy paper.) These sources are attached.
I found a Will Abstract for John Carman, dated Feb 16, 1746 that identifies his children
as Henry Cully Carman, William Burton Carman and wife Rachel Carman. The Stephen Sparks
& Anne Carman genealogy paper identifies the children as Burton Carman (1737-1737),
Rebecca Carman (1738 -??) and William Burton Carman (1740 -1766), but the genealogy paper
makes no mention of Henry Cully Carman.
William Burton Carman (1740 - 1766) married Elizabeth. I obtained this information from
the genealogy paper. I also found a source that shows William Burton Carman married
Elizabeth Sparks (no date given). This source is attached to William Burton Carman's
profile.
According to the genealogy paper, William Burton Carman and Elizabeth had two children:
William Burton Carman, Jr. and John Carman. After William Burton Carman's died
(1766), at the time his estate was being settled, Elizabeth had already remarried to
Thomas Goodwin. The papers settling the estate mentions two surviving "under
age" Carman children: William Burton Carman, Jr. and John Carman. According to the
genealogy paper, William Burton Carman or John Carman fathered Anne Carman.
Stephen Sparks (1774 - 1850) married Anne Carman (1787 - 1868) in Maryland about 1800.
They moved to Ohio in the early 1800s and had many children. The genealogy paper tells
the story about the Sparks family who the used the names Burton and Carman to name their
children. One of the children married Louis Clairmont, my GGgrandfather.
