Hello....just received an SS5 from the Social Security
Administration.....this is the form you fill out when you apply for a
Social Security card. For those who have never requested an SS5 from
the Social Security Administration, these forms are a marvel, and can
often be used as replacements for unfiled Birth Certificates, marriage
certificates, etc, and places individuals to their employers and
residences during the late 30's on up. This is the kind of information
that is found on the Form:
Name: Frank Woolsey Carman
Street and number: Cherry Avenue Bound Brook, NJ
Employer: The Coles Chemicle Co. Inc. Bound Brook, NJ
Age at last Birthday: 38 Date of birth: May 11, 1898
Place of Birth: Brooklyn, NY
Fathers name (regardless of whether living or not): Frank Woolsey
Carman
Mothers name (regardless, etc.): Sarah Louise Stilwell.
Sex: Male Color: WHite date and signature of applicant.
This is a great resource.....on the RootsWeb Social Security Death
Index, is a feature that allows a person (any person) to go in and
attach a "post it" containing whatever message, or information that one
might have, to someones name listed on the Index. These show up as
"Post It" notes #1, #2, etc. and you can view additional information on
these people, other than death date, etc. I have only entered in a
couple of "notes" on my family, and will wait a little longer to see if
this feature takes off.....but it sounds like a nice to way to make
contact with a close relative researching the same person, instead of
the same surname. David
