"MOCKSVILLE -- Doris Marie Potter Carman, 80, of 1251 N. Main St., Mocksville, died
Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Carman was born March 12, 1925,
in Troupsburg, NY, to George E. Potter and Ina A. Graves Potter. She graduated from Jasper
Central School and Houghton College in New York with a degree in music education. In 1969,
she moved with her family to Mocksville, where she became active in church and community
activities.
Mrs. Carman was a piano teacher who taught hundreds of students during a career of more
than 20 years. As a member of First Baptist Church in Mocksville, she was a church
organist and a faithful member of the church choir. Early in a lifetime of dedication to
community service in Davie County, she was active in the NC Symphony Women's Guild and
the Davie County Arts Council where she served as president for several years. She was
also a member of Mocksville Women's Club, holding various offices, including president
from 1992 to 1996. Under her leadership, numerous fund-raising and service projects were
accomplished. In appreciation for her service, she was recognized as Clubwoman of the Year
in 1992; was given honorary life membership in the NC Federation of Women's Clubs in
1996 and in 1999; was recognized by the state federation as Clubwoman With Heart.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 50 years, John Charles Carman; and her
daughter, Sharon Theresa Carman. She is survived by her son, Larry Edward Carman; and the
many friends who loved and admired her. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday Oct.
8, in the Fellowship Hall of First Baptist Church in Mocksville, to be followed at 11:15
a.m. by a service in the church sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may
be made to Mocksville First Baptist Church, 309 N. Main St., Mocksville, NC 27028; or to
the Sharon Carman Scholarship Fund in c/o Greg Lowe, P.O. Box 185, Granite Quarry, NC
28072-0185."
