Subject: Carmen/Brown/LaRue
Hi JoAnn,
I have James Carmen and Margaret Duyws as parents of a Phoebe Carmen (b.
1725 NJ) who married Isaac LaRue (b. 1712, NJ) from a pretty detailed
Ancestral File on LDS (I have not documented).
I only put these people into my file because James M. LaRue (son of Morgan)
married Nancy Brown, daughter of James Brown, Jr and Nancy Ash. I believe
your Phebe is down a generation from the one I mentioned. I have not
checked on children of James M and Nannie Brown LaRue yet.... But when I do,
I will report back to you.
We know of at least 3 Brown families in the Nelson, Hardin, LaRue area late
1700s, early 1800s. Betsy said one line was Catholic from Maryland. Number
2 is pretty prominently known - the 3 Brown brothers who came from Virginia:
James (killed in battle of Blue Lick), John (or William?) and Patrick, I
believe (doing this from memory). My family is NOT from either one of
those - that I know of.... However, there is the great possibility, if they
stayed in the area, their descendants probably inter-married!
To be continued...
Kathie
The earliest BROWN I feel certain of, is Jonathan BROWN who married
Phebe CARMAN. According later censuses, Jonathan is said to have
been born in SC c 1782, but I am willing to look at any other
evidence on this. I have no parental candidates for Jonathan. More
is known about Phebe CARMAN.
Jonathan and Phebe married 2 July 1799 in Elizabethtown [Hardin]
KY. Surety was Joseph BOZARTH. Isaac LaRUE and his wife Bethiah
(various spellings) HARDIN (not proven) LaRUE stated that they were
'both satisfied with the match'. No relationship is
stated. Witnesses were Robert HILLEN and Lezebeth BROWN.
Children: Jourdan BROWN b. c 1809 m Lydia A ALEXANDER settled in
Cumberland Co., IL soon after marriage.
Patrick Henry BROWN b c 1810 m. Mary B LaRUE. Mary d. 1834 and he
may have remarried.
Caleb BROWN b c 1817 (nothing more known.)
Phebe Bethra BROWN b c 1819 m Isaac ALEXANDER (younger brother of
Lydia.) They went to IL too, but then on to [Schuyler] MO.
There were two other children that are said to have died as infants.
Believe these BROWNs were Baptist - since religion was mentioned in
another note.
I have a lot of LaRUE, ALEXANDER and CARMAN information but would
like to know more about the BROWNs.
