I am researching two branches of the Carman family who left Bury Lancashire, England c.
1895. Of my grandfather James Carman´s siblings 6 of his seven brothers and sisters went
to New Bedford. They are in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 US census. One of them Robert, had a
son Thomas who was a sound engineer in the film industry in California.
His sister Pleasant Walker nee Carman b. Norfolk England 1857 emigrated with two children
George and Fred aged abt 10 and 7. There is no mention of her husband whom she married in
Bury, Lancs in 1882. They were in New Bedford, Boston. I met George when I was a child
when he visited Bury, England with his wife Bridget. They were living in New Bedford in
1930. Could it be that Fred married Clara A also living in New Bedford in 1930?
I would love to know whether they had children and whether we have relatives living in
America. I have amassed quite a lot of details about the family from their agricultural
roots in Norfolk, England to the mining area of Durham and from there to the cotton
industry in Bury. The link was to the cotton mills of New Bedford. They travelled far from
their roots seeking employment and Pleasant was the woman who completed this amazing
journey.
