JOHN CARMAN RITES TO BE HELD FRIDAY
Funeral services for John Elbert Carman, 77 years old, a former grocer,
who died last night at his home, 2225 Harlem avenue, will be conducted
at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Empire Baptist church. The Rev.
Clarence E. Bergen and the Rev. K.L. Sutter will officiate.
Pallbearers will be George W. Martin, George Smith, Roland Hill, Tom Douglas,
Ernest Broam and Jess Day. Burial will be Fairview cemetery.
The body will lie in state at the home until the funeral hour.
Mr. Carman had lived in Joplin 50 years. He retired from the grocery business
five years ago. He was a member of the Empire Baptist church.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Ellen J. Carman; four daughters, Mrs. G.A.
Goudle of Los Angeles, Mrs. E.R. leckie, 1108 Waggoner avenue, Mrs. C.E.
Martin, 715 Kentucky avenue, and Mrs. Hugh McKenzie, 2215 Harlem avenue,
and eight grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements will be under the direction of the Hurlbut Undertaking
Company.

Death of John E. Carman
Former resident of This Community
John Elbert Carman, 77 years old, died at 6:45 o'clock last night at his
home in Joplin, following a lingering illness.
Mr. Carman, who was a brother of the late Mrs. B.C. Sutherland, Sr., of
Neosho, resided near Neosho at one time and operated a dairy. For many
years he had been a grocer in Joplin, retiring from active business about
five years ago.
Mr. Carman is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ellen J. Carman, by four daughters,
Mrs. J.A. Goudle of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. E.R. Leckie, Mrs. C.E. Martin
and Mrs. Hugh McKenzie, all of Joplin, and eight grandchildren. Funeral
arrangements have not been completed.
