Following an e-mail from Patricia Tidmarsh a couple of weeks ago, I am pleased to post my
Carman details for general reference, or if anyone has any further details that will
forward my searches.
The 1851 census lists at Dandy Hall, Stanton, Suffolk:
James Carman, 73, head, M, Whitening manuf'r, b. South Lopham, Norfolk
Harriet Carman, 63, wife, M, , b. Hepworth, Suffolk
George Carman, 24, son, U, Ag lab., b. Stanton
Jonathan Carman, 20, son, U, Carder of whitening, b. Stanton
Jemima Carman, 16, dau, U, , b. Stanton
Esther Carman, 12, dau, , , b. Stanton
Henry Carman, 3, grandson, , , b. Thingoe Union House, Bury St Edmunds
The same family appears in 1861 thus:
James Carman, 87, head, M, Pauper, b. South Lopham, Norfolk
Harriet Carman, 64, wife, M, , b. Hepworth, Suffolk
Sarah Clark, 37, dau, U, , b. Stanton
Esther Carman, 22, dau, U, , b. Stanton
In the intervening period - to be precise on 1st June 1855 - Jemima married my
great-great-grandfather, George Sturgeon, at the church of St John Baptist, Stanton.
Several queries arise from these details, of course. The ages vary for James and Harriet
- her age at 1861 is more credible considering the age given for Esther, which is at least
consistent. I am puzzled about the grandson, Henry, too - whose son was he? Presumably
Sarah was an elder daughter, who moved back home to care for ailing parents. Perhaps a
young widow ... or could Clark have been Harriet's maiden name? Given the birthplace
of all the children as Stanton, I was surprised that I could find no trace of the family
on the 1841 census. However, parts of the microfilm at FRC were virtually illegible.
I have a number of other Carman items gleaned from the censuses for Stanton. If anyone
would like details, please contact me.
