There was - indeed still is - a London Livery Company .... The Worshipful
Company of Carmen, formed in 1516. The records, so far as I know, are at the
Guildhall Library, in the City of London.

Subject: Master Carman
My Great Grandfather William Lomas gives his
occupation as Master Carman on the 1891 Southwark census. Could this mean
that he was a member of a guild? Was there a guild for carmen and if so, any
ideas how I might find out?
Many Thanks
Peter Lomas
