My grandfather's geological research in the 1950s indicated that Carman was Welsh.
Apparently it is a fairly common name. The derivation being caer - or castle and
referring to people who lived inside the castle walls rather than in the countryside.

I live in East San Diego Co., CA and I was doing research for the Carman Family who lives
in Lexington, KY. Would the surname, Carman, be Irish. The mother's maiden name was
Donovan. I was born near Vicksburg, Warren Co., MS a few miles from Jackson, Hinds Co.,
