says his grandfather was:
Samuel Carman farmer d. 1878
Children Sarah, Rhoda and Willet
Willet Carman Fisherman m. Anna M. Bolce of Mineola in 1828
Children: Richard, John W, Smith
Smith Carman b. 1855 m. Ann M.Frances in 1879
My husband is descended from Richard Carman son of Willet.
Since Willet was born in 1823 it seems unlikely that he Married Ann Bolce in
1828.
My records indicate that his wife Ann M SMITH was born in July 9, 1828 and
that they were married November 27, 1844 in a Hempstead Presbeterian Church
by Rev Taylor Woodbridge. Their marraige notice appeared in the Long
Islander Newspaper. Since she was only 16 at the time of this marriage, I
would suspect that this is her first marriage and therefore that Bolce is not
her name.
After Willet was killed in the Civil war Ann Smith had two other sons (walter
and Peter). She and they were listed in the 1880 Census as Carmans.
It is true that when her son Richard died in 1928, someone wrote on his death
certificate that his mothers maiden name was Bolz (Bolce). But this
information was provided by a grandson who did not know her first name and
could easily have been uniformed about her maiden name. Could she have
married the Father of these 'extra' children some time later and could his
name have been Bolce?
