To help researchers identify the nature of it's holdings the NARA has placed
the complete "Guide to Federal Records in the National Archives of the United
States" on their web site.

This is the inventory description of all the record groups. I have it in hard
copy, it is 2 volumes plus a separate index and cost about $100. The search
engine is not perfect but having it online is wonderful. Be patient some of
the pages take a long time to load.
The following URL may also be of interest to researchers. Not much is made of
the NARA Library, but I do find myself searching their stacks on occasion and
there are many choice books to be found.

Good luck in your research, one step at a time, backwards.
